Lately I was stuck by how many people seem to be commenting on Emma Chamberlain's "Anything Goes" strongly pushing for someone they entirely do not know to make a pretty big life decision. I found this to be an oddly specific criticism of a public figure, and it got me thinking about how we casually criticize and glorify so many people outside of our own circles. Doxxing, stalking, etc. are all (hopefully) obviously terrible things to come out of a parasocial relationships. I've been wondering lately about where the line between acceptable interest / parasocial lies and I thought it would be fun to chat about-- Where does the impulse to glorify people come from in the first place? I still don't know, but would love to hear your thoughts.
