When I tell people that my absolute favorite show of all time is a show from the 70's where it's about people that work on one floor of a department store, they look at me like I'm nuts. Their loss! If I had to choose just one show to watch forever, this would be it.. and I am unanimous in that!

I consider myself very lucky that i was able to work in a grocery that at the time was the oldest company in my state. It had been established on the day of statehood and locsted several places before the final location where it finally closed. A generational business. I worked for the 3 rd (4th in total) family owner. It was a wood paneled carpeted affair. Not large. Coats of arms adorning the walls. A fireplace and fainting couch in the bread isle. I filled out my application on the couch. It was family owned and the employees had mostlly been there 10 plus years. It was short of open malice or cause, nearly impossible to get fired from there. But it was just like AYBS. The store manager was a card, there was an effeminate guy who worked in the meat department with me, his partner worked in produce. An indian guy who managed dairy, the owner didnt care as long as business went on. His mother in law worked there and was like mrs slocombe. The checkstand girls, a plucky bunch. You never went hungry, you could buy on credit against your next check any time. You got paid weekly, a stub was given put you were paid in cash. It was like working in the grace brothers store. There was even a local person of some import that was older than dirt that came in every Christmas propped up by two assistants who handed out cash to the employees. The manager would often remind us that this wasnt the real world and no other job would ever be like this again. He was right. I worked with him for two years and we had the same days off. Everyone had one day off in common because the store was closed like chick fila on sundays and one other day off. I got OT every day because someone quit and anyway, the whole two years I worked with him, he never failed to make a silence of the lambs reference even if it made no sense in context. I MISS that place.

If ANYONE other than 1970’s British actors were shooting a scene with Mollie Sugden hoisted into the air over someone’s shoulders, whoop-whooping like that, they’d *still* all be on the floor laughing to this day. Everyone’s self control is amazing in the shot and I’m glad because it allows me as a millennial, to laugh my ass off at it as if it was shot yesterday. We could learn a thing or two about the subtle nuances of comedy from this scene.

Still has nothing on Communist censorship. I remember a guy who created crossword puzzles said after the Communists lost power that once, he had been investigated for creating a "puzzle disrespectful of Lenin". It turned out a censor claimed "if you put together the end of this column, and three letters from this column, and the beginning of this column, and... it says Lenin was an ass." I mean, you could do that with EVERY crossword puzzle. Crazy times.
