I definitely agree, independent of ideology. As for "most diverse", there's several bases on which you can measure that one, primarily geographic. Diverse compared to what baseline? The Nation? State? County/Metro? A hypothetical rural Upper Midwest county that's 4% Black, 4% Hispanic 1% Native American and 1% Asian/Pacific Islander may be diverse by rural upper midwest standards, but that still leaves 90% who are NonHispanic White - hardly a kaleidoscope of ethnicity by national standards. I say the most truly diverse places are where all the largest three or four ethnicities are more or less even in raw numbes.

this topic was covered by Malcolm X and Martin Luther King on the dangers caused by white liberals and some of these "progressives" . in fact white liberals seem to want to control the focus of minorities in social struggles. This is why we can support each but we need to control our own destiny. We are not all the same and that is OK also.

And a bunch of nations living within the same territory to this degree is brand new. It certainly doesn't define a place. And that is regressive, not developed. So where you are from is likely a place with the rooted population that is the nation of that land and then a bunch of newcomers and their children. I have traveled in Europe and you see the local people and then immigrants. It's not like every family member in each family is of a different ethnicity or race making some rainbow, and there is definitely conflict between the locals and the newcomers. 1990s me: a single working woman, I'd lived in Oakland for many years. One chilly Saturday in March, I found: two little kids left out all day in the rain to hang around, no waterproof jackets, no money for food, throwing litter into Lake Merritt .....I was out for a jog, young, idealistic, spotted them kicking at the geese, told them to knock it off, gave them a bird lecture and marched them back to my apt. to stand near the radiator for a dry-off. They were drenched, smelly and looked utterly worn out. The little fellow had sticky eyes and gunky teeth. Twelve (girl) and 5 (boy) walking into my middle-class apt (everything 2nd hand) & reacted like it was Versailles. They sat as quiet as mice and didn't touch a thing while I scrambled 6 eggs, 1/2 loaf whole wheat into the toaster. Devoured butter, peanut butter, jam and bananas. They drained a quart of milk. They were absolutely ravenous. Sister offered everything first to little brother...she was like a little mum...broke my heart. (Remember how we needled the baby in the family? not this girl...she guarded baby brother like a hawk.) I wanted so badly to stick the little guy in a hot bath and tuck him into bed for a nap.....he was so dirty, quiet and lethargic. Where's mother? at Ross. Dad? shrug. I drove them partway home--she didn't want me going all the way into their neighborhood. So I dropped them on a corner by Park. The 5 year old had never been in a car; she'd never been across the Bay Bridge; neither knew how to click the seatbelts in; I had never encountered that level of poverty. I told them to come back. I gave them my info (have your ma ring me; she never did.) The following Saturday, they pressed my buzzer. We went to the library. Every Friday night for the next month, I ran to the market, stocked up (per my mother in Boston - ha!)...who supervised the menu (no soda or chips!) and ordered me to fix them chicken salad, meatloaf, soup, bananas, oranges, omelets, rice pudding and oatmeal cookies and to have plenty of whole milk on hand. My dad hovered on the other line...did I need extra grocery money so I could buy them extras? (We talked about how to handle buying them stuff....couldn't make up my mind.) But boy, those kids ate....I've never seen kids so hungry. Then a month or so in, they appeared with these young men... "the brothers".......a scary trio of teen-aged men-boys who swarmed my apt. like animals. Their behavior....am I racist to describe the most uncouth, uneducated pack? And so that was The End. Because the following Sat. they were downstairs again. And I didn't bother to buzz them up. A well-to-do black colleague (lawyer) shook his head and said, yeah, you need to be really, really careful with those guys...you have no idea the life that they lead.....and advised me to not answer my door to them again. Twenty-five years later, I don't know what more I could have done for the 2 children. But I'll never forget how starved they were. And how deprived they were of: guidance. Sleep. Supervision. Soap. Conversation. Structure. They had nothing. Fending for themselves. I still feel pain and anger when I think of those children. Has Robin, in her tasteful Eileen Fisher garb, ever driven into inner city Oakland? Because these were just 2 out of ??

Love how she dodged the question about criticisms by other black people - they weren't just the ones who didn't believe that racism exists. I wouldn't care if she was just sharing her own experiences but she's doing a whole lot more than that. This woman disgusts me. She has caused more divisiveness than any other single person speaking out about racism. She has been roundly criticized by black and white scholars alike. Despite her protests, this is more about ameliorating her own guilt and making big bucks off of shaming all whites: to say that all whites are racist by virtue of being white is b.s. In short, this is a woman exploiting Black suffering for her own gain. Incidentally, I have been a lifelong in-your-face-I-will-kick-your-ass anti-racist since I was a tween --several decades ago.

@V So. Maybe I should stay out of this past convo - but I caught a dogwhistle of a kind in your comment. Let me start by saying I'm a black woman - and I'm not one of the black people who criticize Dr. D's writings or theories. Quite the opposite - I find her analyses en pointe. I also have come to the conclusion that the white people who take issue with her work are often the very types of personas she's writing about. The white fragility she first wrote about was not an attempt to absolve white people from responsibility to address and confront racism within themselves and therefore help dismantle it in society -- it was simply to explain or give a term to what happens emotionally inside white people when confronted with the spectre of racism. Black critics thought that by describing the malfunctions that Robin was 'excusing' white people from responsibility (they are fragile, weak, incapable)..Wrong. The white people who criticize her work were in my mind triggered - she hit nerves they weren't willing to address. Now she approaches the other more insidious type of white 'anti-racist' -- the polite nice ones. The ones who require things to be done 'nicely' - say it the right way - or approach it this or that way to make sure white people are not 'offended' 'made uncomfortable' - you know V, so as not to 'cause more harm than good' 'to create more division'......the dog whistle I heard here 'She has caused more divisiveness" -- (How?!! - because she presents hard hitting and yes triggering information to confront the uncomfortable parts of people who have convinced themselves they have their Masters in anti-racism -- people who "have been a lifelong in-your-face-i-will-kick-your-ass anti-racist'........So by virtue of that status you've given yourself -- You V (and allthe other nice ones) take issue with a white woman doing her part to dismantle racism by pointing out the inner work for white people is ongoing. RD states upfront she is a white woman who identifies as a progressive liberal - and she has always stated that her category of white well-meaners are the worst when it comes to really tackling the dragon of racism. Because they insist by whatever merit badges they've tacked on their own lapels that they are no longer the problem - they are the 'good' ones' -- and racism is still out there running rampant because of every other reason but their additions to the equations.... I've heard too many white people like you V -- who fall on laurels -- what is your objection to having a book that in fact does what you claim is required?! Books written by white activist academics like RD'A are in fact kick-you-in-your-ass type books. This book doesn't focus on the redneck Bible belt evangelicals-- this book - both her books focused on YOUR group of white people. The ones who say things like they have tenure fighting racism - but who also are here downgrading her work because it's 'divisive' (again TELL ME HOW?!!!)..... She's not projecting -- she's self-aware and she is accurate. I'm a black person who has lived my whole life experiencing 'good white people' - she hasn't mis-applied any theory to you all. She's right on the money. My take is this author is doing anti-racist work. It is triggering - unpleasant - confronting people at their weakpoints (their EGOS - white liberals egos are ginormous on this point)....She's one of a handful of white anti-racist philosopher author/activists that I would think someone like you would want in the fight...... I for one appreciate her efforts.

It’s also called “polite racism”. I get it EVERYDAY...subtle but it’s their just below the surface delivered with a smile. People who know what the real meaning of racism understands that it’s not necessarily a spoken statement. Blacks are not racist.. we aren’t asking for everything for ourselves and none for everyone else/none blacks.. contrary to what many whites deemed to be their god-given right..to own EVERYTHING.. even another human. Everything meaning economic power, political power, homeownership power, educational power, judicial power, land power t... to hold power on every level in society which impacts on everything and everyone else around them.... this is the true term for racism, those who strongly believe in this idea are racist, those who oppose to anyone talking about it are racist because they defend racist ideology. Me calling a white person out for ill deeds does NOT make me a racist, because I control none of the above specifications of power .You are racist if you burn down an entire town because the black inhabitants who built it is thriving and you’re sense superiority and entitlement wouldn’t allow it, you’re a racist if you start another race riot ..a black Wall Street in Texas if a white man wants a radio owned by a black( customer) ..a woman 📻 that was repaired by a white business owner who had planned to steal the radio by making it hard for the black owner to pay the repair bill , then selling the radio to a white man.📻 It’s call COVETING for all you white Christians who still feel entitled. The same people who don’t understand the definition /term of racism and bigotry are the same people who are quick to say socialism is the same as communism when they feel the strings of their goody-bag is being loosened more for blacks. I put it to them, go live in Russia 🇷🇺 and Cuba 🇨🇺 or Belarus 🇧🇾 for a year before you start with your BS. You’ll blend right in and you won’t have to see too many blacks.

Instead of assuming people are defensive in the worst way (as well as being racist, I mean, damn - the audacity), I think a better gameplan would be to ask: "are you racist?" When they say no, you ask: "do you want to be?" When they say no to that, you ask: "why not?" When they say, "because it's bad/wrong/not what I believe in, etc.", you ask them "why/how did you come to that realization?" From that point onward, you would find more effective resources with far deeper emotional revelations and cultural impacts than this "nice trolling" trigger-shilling paperweight she's selling. Deconstructing a problem to its last quark doesn't solve the problem. It's better to try finding the solution by seeing what works for large swaths of people, refining those tools and daring them to adopt the refined machinery.

You can be either an explicit, ideological racist who brandishes Confederate or Nazi symbols or a nice, progressive racist who deludes him/herself into thinking that they aren't racist by championing causes of social justice; those are your only two options, and denying that "reality" only makes you even more of a racist or a sexist or a homophobe or whatever. As a Black person , I couldn’t find a white person attracted knowing as a whole what they have done in the past and continue to do to my people. Biracial people ( especially white and black ) are innocent but the parents of the two were miseducated about white supremacy. I don’t mean to be offense but just think about Jewish people and how you rarely see a Jewish and German person married. It’s because it the bad blood between the two and Germany has apologized and corrected their mistake to some extent but the US has never addressed racism or repaired the past with reparations . All over the world, lighter skin people are viewed better…. Why ??? Because of white supremacy and the influence it had / has on the world. Anti blackness is real and was created by white supremacy only. Again , I think biracial people have a voice but unfortunately they too , are viewed as non white in this system of hate. Again, learn your history , and know who’s doing all of this ….speak truth to power and you’ll be find. First this is the best interview I’ve seen of Dr DiAngelo, Thanks Michel Martin. In any previous interviews I’ve seen if the subject of her detractors came up the interviewer would pose the question by first dismissing them as racist and then ask what Robin thought about it. Michel allowed her to voice her own denunciation. The problem is that her critics all stand as straw-men and the actual criticisms are never engaged with. So here are a couple of criticism from a pragmatic progressive that I really wish she would address. First:, and this one is by far the most important to me, I think that the idea’s she promotes hurt African Americans. There is a long list of concrete things that need to be done in this country to improve the lives of our citizens. This involves directly confronting structural racism and also general material improvement that will disproportionately benefit minorities, as minorities are disproportionately harmed by the status quo. I’m not arguing that it is just a mere distraction from more important matters, but I strongly suspect that what she popularizes is destroying what chance we have to form a political alliance that can make real structural change. If you could show me that I’m wrong about this and that her type of Anti-racism mindfulness will lead to a better more just country, then I would retract this and all objection that follow. Second:, I find it repulsive to be moralized to by the corporate world. This is the function that DiAngelo fulfills she is a contractor to HR departments so that corporations can woke-wash themselves. This is a deflection, “don’t look at us and our business practices look at all the rank and fill with their nativist attitudes.” Third:, and this is the pettiest objection I have, It seems to me that when DIAngelo recounts the evolution of her awakening full of cringe moments, she is then and now trying to find personal absolution. To which I say fine but who cares that’s a you thing. Fourth:, the basic impetus of white fragility is that she was speaking to groups of people to try and foster a deeper racial understanding and when she engaged with people they didn’t like it. If this had been me at the very least, I would have thought long and hard about whether this was my failing and not others. If as Kendi has defined it racism should be evaluated by results rather then intent, I suspect at the end of the day she is advocating racism against black people. I’m sure this is not her intent.

Thank you for your question, I really appreciate it. Yes, I agree. You are right she is trying to model a certain kind of self-examination. Yet I still feel like that is just an invitation to enter into a ritual of penance. There is nothing wrong with this. For some people this may be what they need, and they should, on a voluntary basis, do it. I don’t believe that this is a universal truth. I believe that for some people this just isn’t helpful. But for those who do participate what is the hopeful outcome? . I think the only reasonable thought is that it might help people be less injurious in their interpersonal interactions. A good thing! But who are we taking about here, I think primarily more affluent cosmopolitan people who work in the corporate managerial or academic settings. As DiAngelo has demonstrated by example there are still interaction that are undesirable in this realm. To me this problem pails in comparison to the suffering endured by the bottom quarter of the economy. There is an implication in DiAngelo’s presentation that this is how we address racism in America. The kind of racism she is talking about is a thing, Yes, its just not the same thing as redlining legacy, police brutality, inability to access decent medical care and quality primary education…..Etc. @@amykaufman6327

You raised a lot of points to unpack. One of the ideas from her book is the value of individualism. So, if you (not you, lith) see racism as a moral issue and not structural the first step might be taking a personal inventory of how you benefit from an unfair structure. This means it becomes a personal thing. People have a hard time grappling with structures and systems and networks and would rather point to one person to sanction. So by doing the introspective work you are taking the first step in becoming an active member of society to question the policies and structures around you and do something about it. If you get into feeling guilty all the time or performative penance you've missed the point. Discomfort should cause change.

@@quidagis33 Thanks for your comment on my post I appreciate it! Discomfort causes change because one moves to a position of less discomfort. For me the discomfort that the unfairness of our country imbues is not get over able. You learn to live with it. I don’t personally find this discomfort to be a helpful motivator but more a byproduct of knowledge of the situation. People are complex and vary. One person’s poison is another’s elixir. When I think about motivations for change it is hard for me to conceive of a person that is open to DR DiAngelo’s program that isn’t already in favor of the kinds of structural changes that are needed. I tend to think that she preaches to the choir and alienates people who might be helpful in our efforts but are “heretics” to neo-antiracism because they have a different philosophical cosmology. I believe we all are mythological in our views of race and in fact can be nothing else. We exchange one imperfect vision for another. Among those of us acting with good will and altruistically I think there should be no “heretics”. In essence I think we are locked into an internal culture war on the left that hampers our collective effort. Things she says like “Progressives do the most racial harm” Don’t bring us together to do the actual work but sow division and frankly sound like talking points for the right.

@Lith Wilson Wow! I don't know where to begin - but I want to chime in. Paragraph 1: 'I think that the ideas she promotes hurt African Americans" I thought I was going to say that statement dumbfounded me - as in how did you come up with that convolution? But I understand what compels the idea or the cynicism. I think that (assuming you are AA) what happens for some of us at this juncture is the only outcome we want to see from a white person's verbal assertions on racism (whether that be a politician, celebrity, or author) is something concrete. Legislation, an actual active change. And it seems that the mere fact of this author articulating nuances of the problem of racism - isn't enough. What will are her talking, interviews and writing accomplish? I think that is a mistaken mental query. Martin spoke about black criticism of DiAngelo's works as being harmful to creating a kind of moral superior trope (monolithic) of black people - and therefore making us one-dimensional. Because her books are laser focused on the pathologies of white persons inside the struggle of racism from within them - the mistake i feel is to assume she is offering a moral highground to black folks - as in that spiritual black saviour to white people. I don't think that is the intent at all. I think the problem is that since she doesn't 'address' black people per se as the issue in her writings - and also she doesn't particularly focus on solutions (legislations, political plans etc)....black criticism falls in this weird murky place for me (I'm a black woman who is thrown by black criticism of her and other works like hers). To me it's obvious -- she's writing these books to do a kind of metaphysical surgery or diagnostic on white people from the inside out on this subject. She's doing exactly what 'we' claim we want: White folks, go get your people! But when she does it in these 2 books now -- there's complaint from some black arenas that is isn't enough, or misdirecting the conversation. Thing is this: the problem of racism is a mental, psychological, acculturation, societal, systemic one. White people (and all the rest of us) have been immersed, marinated, infused, soaked to the soul in it. If the work doesn't start on the internal level - on the Self-introspection level for white folks....no legislation or political or social reform will adhere or let alone get activated in any true paradigm shifting way. So when you say all her talk what will it do if it doesn't produce a tangible change -- the change has to start on the inside of the white society that is at the crux of the problem. Her books are about the critical self-examination that white people need to do. And that is why so many white people are so 'mad' about her books -- because she's hitting deep nerves especially with the ones that thought they were 'the good ones'.....This is the reason too why she speaks of her own personal journey -- It's relevant 100%. How would you imagine being able to reach the inner workings of fellow white people unless one can speak from personal experience? She's telling her journey with every cringe worthy misstep to relate to her audience - to show them it's okay -- and to help them access their own need for work.... I don't see her works as counterproductive in any way - especially not towards black community. I think her work is to collect her folks just like she's doing. I also have no idea where you'd come up with her work being lowkey advocating FOR racism towards black folks (?!!!!!???)

@@terriewigfall5793 THANK YOU. I just didn't have the energy to engage with that long question which, in my eyes, was just a more complicated way of saying the same thing that her critics have (to my mind) unjustly been accusing her of. There's always seems to be this sentiment out there that if we delve too deeply into the culpable behaviors of the majority group that we'll undermine any meanginful political alliances. If that was the case then the alliance wasn't going to hold anyway. As indeed it didn't for quite some time after the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. The retrenchment was quite real. The majority group fled to the suburbs and corporate careerism (the same thing many of them are accusing DiAngelo of) and left African Americans (my own group) hanging in deteriorating, disinvested cities. The simple explanation of the backlash against DiAngelo is "hit dogs holler". I mean as was already pointed out King made this exact point - and then got shot days later. The basic reality is DiAngelo is bringing a lot of folks a "come to Jesus" moment. And they can't handle it.

this is my complaint also after listening. Painting everyone with the same big paint brush. The conversation is important and change is needed, but alot of things are left out when painting everyone with a big paint brush, this leads to not getting anywhere socially even with all this effort. Are we trying to build a livable culture for us all to live as well as possible or are we into blame, shame and attack? I moved away from where I grew up due to racism there and came to CA and found several new kinds of racism. It has only gotten worse in both places and this breaks my heart. When I was in college a woman came to talk and she was telling me that because i can pass as white I have nothing to say, and that my people kept her people down for 400 years. well did we do this from the reservations we were forced to move (one branch of my family) or did we do this from europe (other branch came only 100 years ago, lived in the north) we were the only mixed race family in our area, and were so poor, treated differently, not allowed to play with some people, not included. Blaming and shaming others with one big brush is going to lead to more and more layers of misunderstanding. I hope we can find ways of having the conversation that include multicultural and mixed race points of view.

There is critical thinking, which is lacking, and there is bias in thinking. There are racial issues that definitely need to be addressed in America, but the scenario of the office "racism" happens even among people of the same race! Racism happens all around the world where "white" people aren't even the dominant power. The issue is a form of tribalism where anyone different than us, in looks or thought, are dehumanized or devalued as "others" in order to preserve the tribe. This is being done between Republicans and Democrats independent of race. All people have this tendency and it is between all people. So, the question is, when are we going to stop focusing on what a particular race has to do (a form of racism), and get EVERYBODY thinking about their biases while still fixing the problems that do clearly oppress certain people groups in our society. It seems some critical thinking is being limited to only one perspective. Let's broaden the discussion and not be blinded by our own biases.

Grow up and quit letting these grifters manipulate you into self-loathing and discontent.. Just be a decent person toward everyone regardless of race and you'll find that these race baiting ultra-left academics are getting rich off of the division they sow at the detriment of us all regardless of color.. Don't be so easily misled into shame for something you're not guilt of.. Unless you are guilty of it and in that case, well, I guess you're merely another example of the left who's so quick to call racism in everything and everyone because of their own deeply troubling feelings toward their own people and how they view "others" so presume to speak for us all.. Leave me outta that horseshit.

I guess to answer a question she posed as to why folks are so upset at CRT is it's still in effect by way of the 13th Amendment as through that slavery just evolved as it's still alive and well and "They" are reaping the benefits from it. Example of this is having a work force out there working to save your home and property putting their lives on the line as they do so only getting paid a dollar an hour to keep the fires away from homes and properties they themselves will more than likely never be able to own in their lifetime.

What are you talking about?? A "dollar an hour"? If you're referring to the prison camp firefighters, let me assure you as someone who has personally taken part in that activity while incarcerated at the Tonopah Conservation Camp back in early 2002, every one of us were voluntarily participating and overwhelmingly glad to be getting paid that seemingly meager wage for the efforts as the saving of homes is rewarding per se and the money as well as meals and other amenities were greatly appreciated during those outings when we could have been assigned after muster to simply building a rock wall along the driveway to the facility or some other meandering task which pays NOTHING so don't presume to speak for anyone whom you don't know unless you've walked in their shoes.. If you're referring to some other job that pays "a dollar an hour" well, minimum wage in this country exposes your declaration as nonsense and you should feel ashamed for stating such horseshit.

If it's racist to say racism exists then how the fuck do we actually deal with racism??? Is it racist to say racism existed durring slave trading and Jim crow era? Yes of course, according to you. What wouldnt be racist was to claim that race had nothing to do with how the black people where treated back then right??? So if acknowlegeing racism ever existed is function of racism. Then we can decide to do bad racism or good racism. Bad racism is like the holocaust. Good racism is like saving Jewish people from the holocaust. @@varrantgreen4259 Because the "reports" are often selectively edited to misrepresent the facts. You may recall that "noose" incident last year, when a black man claimed to find a "noose" in his garage. The news agencies played it up big. The FBI investigated...and the "noose" turned out to be nothing more than a plastic pull-handle for the garage door. Of course, the news agencies conveniently ignored that. They want to provoke anger, anarchy and rioting. "These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren" (Proverbs 6:16-19, KJV). My story does prove I'm not racist. You are arguing from the presumption of guilt, and that is illegal. I do not care if they claim to do this for social justice or to create awareness; racism exists precisely because people have centered race in the past. This is not the path forward.
