Costco Interstate batteries are made by Johnson Controls and unfortunately have moved manufacturing to Mexico, and owners have complained that they no longer are the same quality. Walmart batteries are also made by Johnson controls or Exide depending on the model, but Walmart offers a longer warranty at 5 years.

It is -17 outside today in South Dakota, my interstate battery decided it was time to exit the chat at 10 PM on a work night. It worked fine prior, but the extreme temps were a wrap for it. In a pinch, i had to stop at Walmart before they closed to get one. All they had was the Value version in stock, but it did get my car running in this weather. I will keep this updated to let you all know how it holds up. I plan to take full advantage of the warranty if I have to, I hope I can get a couple years out of it and provide some good feedback 🙏 It is the 24F size, it cost 69 dollars plus a core fee of 12 dollars. Definitely cant complain about the price. Yes, there are better batteries out there. Most cost double or triple what this cost. It seems like warranties parallel the prices, double the price, double the warranty. Triple the price, triple the warranty. At this point, i see it as i paid 1/2-1/3 what any other battery would run me in this size class. If i have to replace it sooner, whatever

Does Walmart still sell those batteries with the servicable caps? The last time I looked (a year ago) they'd switched to a different supplier with sealed tops (walmart's web pages still show the old, Johnson Controls batteries with the caps. But, when you go to the store they're not the same.). I'm wondering if you reviewed a battery nobody can get now? I hope I'm wrong. I liked the original (capped) batter. I don't trust the sealed ones because I typically had to add distilled water twice a year. If I didn't, it would go down to the plates, and then that's the end. I don't think the sealed "maint free" batteries can prevent that can they?

My 2017 INFINITI QX50 battery just died. It was 7 years old (original Nissan battery). All the batteries I looked at online were only warranted for 3 years maybe 4 years max. The Nissan batteries are warranted for 84 months which I think is outstanding. I got the battery jumped and drove it to the INFINITI dealer for another Nissan battery. At $199.99 that's a great price for a battery with a 7 year warranty. The best (other branded) batteries I could buy were well over $200.00

I have already tried to charge it twice with my charger. Yesterday I charged for 10 hours at 2amps, and still it wasn't done. I went out today and barely started leaving home, barely started very slowly, coming home. And today I am charging again. It has been charging for 2 hours so far, and it is at 1.5 amp at 2 amp setting. Time to pick up a new one tomorrow.

Currently I have the cheapest 2 year battery from Wal-Mart in two different cars. One is close to 5 years old, the other is a little over 5 years old. Usually those batteries go just past the 2 year warranty, at least the previous ones I've had. But because of Cvid and me doing less driving, it stretched out pretty far. I drive both at least 10 to 15 miles a week just to keep the batteries up. But yeah those 2 or 3 year batteries last pretty close to the age they're rated. Most times I go slightly past the age rated if I drive almost every day. Incredibly accurate warranty/replacement rating.

100% of my Walmart batteries, Maxx R124, worked past 6 years. The current battery was made 4/2018 and starts the car a little slower. Unfortunately, the new batteries have 3-year warranties. The old ones were 5-year. If your battery has removable caps, remove them and add distilled water to the lower edge of the cap hole for each hole. Most folks never check the water level.

Actually your original battery was discharged and needed to be charged to 100% before any other tests are valid. At around 12.34 volts your state of charge is around 72%, so the 9.6 volts threshold loaded voltage drop only applies to a fully charged 12.7 volt battery. Your original battery probably had many years of life left in it. Johnson Controls manufactures the flooded acid batteries for Walmart and many other brands. Not one single test can determine if a battery is 'bad'. You needed to also do a internal resistance test, that is another more telling test as to a batteries condition. I currently have three Johnson Controls batteries and two of them (Sears Die Hard's) are 12 years old & 15 years old, plus I have a Walmart Everstart at the 9 year mark, and all three are still going strong, no issues. Tip for long battery life, flooded acid batteries want to be stored at 100% and no less, so all mine sit on battery maintainers when not in use, any less than 100% and sulfation will start taking place.

@@josemedeiros007 I am not familiar with Pulsetech. Keeping your battery fully charged to 100% is the best thing you can do to increase battery life. Sulfation occurs when the battery has been in a prolonged state of discharge, So try and avoid storage below 2.07V/cell 12.42 volts. Just about every battery maintainer out there on its first step sends a pulsed current and voltage as a desulfation step. There are two types of sulfation, reversible (or soft sulfation), and permanent (or hard sulfation). Sending a Pulsing charge to the battery will lower the sulfation on a healthy battery, but it cannot effectively reverse the condition once it is present. The other method that I am aware of is sending an overcharge to an already fully charged battery (this will heat the battery up to 122-140°F) for about 24 hours to help to dissolve the sulfate crystals. Applying pulses and or inducing an overcharge will harm the battery by promoting grid corrosion. There is really no simple and easy methods to measure and remove sulfation. Best thing to do is just to put a 100% fully saturated charge (once every few weeks for a 14-16 hour minimum) so sulfation is kept at a minimum. All my batteries are kept on a charger when not in use as they are not daily drivers.

I need some advice what to do. I have mixed feelings about Walmart batteries. On a Dodge Avenger a 70$ battery was put. I was shocked for a big 4 door sedan a battery this cheap existed. After putting it on it ran fine about a month. Then it wouldn’t start had to jump it and battery light stayed on. One of the managers checked it and apologized and swapped it out quickly. Then another month later it did the same thing. Had it checked and a regular employee said he tested it and it was fine even though the battery light was again on and they refused to change it out. After driving it some more the battery light went off. Well right now on a 2013 Ford Escape a Walmart battery is all I can afford and I really need this car running asap been without a car awhile now. Has a 2 year warranty when I think the dodge one had only 1 year. I really don’t wanna end up in some sketchy boat as dodge. Keep in mind ford has lots of electronics and navigation etc. is it a bad idea where I should hold out longer for a better battery ?

With a battery I purchased from Autozone in 2019, it advertised a 5 year warranty, but after 3 years they only refund you a portion of the price depending on how many months are left. I looked at the same battery and they are now advertising a 3 year warranty, but still have the same warranty policy of refunding a portion of the price up to five years. Maybe that is the same with the EverStart? I’m guessing they weren’t allowed to continue advertising a 5 year warranty because it mislead people the believe they would get a free replacement through the full 5 years.

Seems like everything is lower quality nowadays, time will tell, I replace a Costco battery in my Element and a Walmart battery in my Civic with in a month from each other, these are the same battery type, I’ll let you know which fail first in a video hopefully years from now

My 2007 Honda CR-V’s WalMart EverStart battery recently died after 3.5 years of use. My 2012 VW Jetta with same brand battery lasted the same. Just sold the Honda last week. What a great car. In the family since new. My daughter’s 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT’s battery also died after the same 3.5 years and was a Hyundai factory battery. I agree the WalMart ones used to last longer. And, yes, I also priced batteries and both the Honda & Hyundai got the less expensive battery from Costco. They will most likely last the same 3.5 years, give or take a few months. They will last just long enough to pass the warranty period. I also recall batteries lasting about 5 years.

I just had ever start battery warrantied with Walmart. The battery for my car was $119 in July of 2021. It was $183 now in 2023. Good thing it was warranted... I called Costco out of curiosity and their price is $109. Would save enough to cover a year membership plus $20.

Sometimes they even use the same exact case. The duralast batteries and Everstart batteries appear to use the same case. The specs are the same. The only obvious difference is the label. Walmart charges less for them, and on the platinum one, they give a much better warranty.

There is no such thing as a "Walmart battery". About 20 years ago, I worked at an Exide battery manufacturing facility. I quickly learned that in every size of battery, the exact same battery would get an Everstart label placed on it, on one assembly line... while it would get a Motorcraft label on a different assembly line...or a NAPA label on a third assembly line...or etc, etc. In other words, except for the different labels, the exact same batteries were being shipped to Walmart and Sam's Club, that were being shipped to AutoZone, O'Reilly's, NAPA, or any number of auto parts retailers.

@2:22 "My battery went down to 8 volts." Yet, your car started, seemingly with no strain. So although that battery is technically registering as bad, do you really need to replace it right away? If you did not replace it, how much longer could you expect it to start your car? Because if it will still get the job done for another 6 months, then why start a new warranty on a new battery? Did you replace it because once it drops below 9.6 volts, it can fail at any time? Or it cannot be trusted in cold weather? Something else? I am trying to understand why dropping to 8 volts, and yet the car started with no apparent strain, translates to replacing the battery without delay. ----- I will soon be shopping for a new battery, and I have read mostly good reviews (including yours) on Walmart batteries. But when I put my car's make, model, year, and trim into Walmart's web site, I am presented with 11 choices. They all have somewhat similar cold cranking amps values (assuming those figures are accurate), and the prices range from $69 to $399, and some of the lower cost batteries have the same, or higher CCA value as the more expensive batteries. How is a customer supposed to choose? Which model did you purchase?

Great questions, two quick points to consider, one: you never know where you’ll be when your battery fails, two, all other components are working harder when a battery isn’t working properly

  • @NoEgg4u

@@dannysdiygarage Oh. I assumed that once the car was running, and the alternator was providing electrical current, that the battery was basically out of the picture. Can you provide guidance on how to choose which Walmart battery, as they vary wildly in price, for similar CCA power. I saw a review where the host said to purchase the least expensive battery, because the more expensive ones are no better (you are just paying for a longer warranty). The inexpensive one might last as long or longer than the expensive one. It is a crap shoot. So if the $69 battery happens to die in 18 months (out of warranty), then your new purchase (another $69) is even better than initially spending $149, as you might get 3 or maybe 5 years out of the inexpensive battery. Is that good advice, to go with the $69 Walmart battery? How did you choose your Walmart battery model? Which model did you purchase?

First of all. Walmart doesn’t make batteries. I have bought many Walmart batteries. They have always lasted 4 years or longer. The last one I bought was $100.00 dollars cheaper than Auto Zone. It work just fine. Rural King is a good source for batteries too. Good prices too. Never buy anyone’s economy battery. Never had any luck with them.
