    I've been watching hockey a long time, and I've never seen anything like it. So amazed at their scouting when it came to selecting in the expansion. If Gallant & McPhee don't take home awards this summer, it's a crime.

    MyName Jeff no they didn't. This is the first time any team has been able to pull active players under contract from another team. Most teams were created from free agents or teams that were relocated.

    MyName Jeff read the rules and stipulations to those drafts. Games played, retention,no trades.. bettman did a whole lot less to help those teams than he did for the knights. He gave Vegas free reign with no rules other that 2 years in the league.

    What? Granted I do not deny that Vegas had the expansion draft slanted in their favor. But not by a ton. This draft did have a two year in the league exception, but each team's (A option) were also able to protect 7 Forwards 3 D-men and 1 goalie... There was also a B option where teams could claim 8 skaters and one goalie. I want to say that the A option this time was was the B option from the last expansion draft. Regardless, each team could protect the 2 year exempt players as well as all of their first two lines, and the best player from their third line. AND their three best D-men and their number one goalie. The chances are that Vegas in almost every instance got someone their old teams felt were expendable Like William Karlsson who until this breakout year, never had more than 9 goals in a full season (two years ago). He was a BRILLIANT pick, absolutely brilliant. Karlsson has 25 goals and 15 assists in 46 games. Teams could ALSO make deals with Vegas to protect their rosters. For instance the Wild were willing to give the rights to Alex Tuch if Vegas would take Erik Haula. Tuch has 22 points and Haula has 32 points for the Knights. The Knights also worked a deal with Florida (besides getting Johnathan Marchessault their top scorer in the e-draft) to get Reilly Smith in exchange for a 4th round pick. The Panthers did that to shed themselves of Smith's 5 years contract. Smith is now a vital part of Vegas' top line with Marchessault and Karlsson and they three have provided the Knights with 120 points in 45 games. Smith is well on his way to top his career high in points (51) he has 37 so far. Up and down the line Vegas is getting exceptional years from their players. It's NOT that Vegas had beneficial e-draft rules (though that helped) it's that the Knights front office made GREAT deals and picked about as brilliantly as they possibly could. Not taking solid NHL types, but insisting on taking players that fit their system, or making expedient deals that also netted them great prospects like Shea Theodore and Alex Tuch... I feel certain that Seattle if given the same e-draft rules will not have nearly Vegas' success unless they pick/make deals as brilliantly as the Knights did! AND hire a great coach like Gallant!

  • @BoredDan7
    @BoredDan76 жыл бұрын

    Honestly even if part of it is more favorable expansion draft rules imho that's a good thing. Those first few seasons can be a huge determining factor for whether or not a new franchise is viable in the future, especially in areas where hockey isn't already established. I'd rather see expansion teams have a favourable edge than get screwed as I want to see new teams succeed. I think it's better for the league that way and better for hockey overall. That said even with the more favourable rules the Golden Knights have gone above and beyond and that's great to see.

    I look at it this way, Vegas picked up a bunch of different players who "couldn't cut it" with their former team so they are extra motivated basically every night they go out. Lets just hope Vegas avoids the sophomore slump.

    George Johnston the only thing I know is everyone said the Knights would be awful after the expansion draft, except the guys at sinbin.vegas who i listened to and believed. I thought we would be at least competitive from their insight. Not first place in the West competitive on February 2 but still at least as good as the Senators which might seem rediculous because of their win loss record but not when you factor in first year expansion team.

    Another mans trash is another mans treasure and that cant be more true here with Vegas. They were given the right recipe for a good team of chemistry. They are clicking together and with their success this far its more then luck. We in the pacific div. better get use to them being around. However, there is alot of hockey left but they sure are not showing any weakness of slowing down. Best hockey expansion team for sure SO FAR....

    Honestly, of the expansion teams built by drafts previous to this season the Fla. Panthers have had the best inaugural season with 83 points. Vegas, halfway through have 60 points and are on track for 120 or more! Unless something untoward happens, I think Vegas will just keep putting up numbers that no one will believe from an expansion team.

    I thought the NHL was crazy with the idea of expanding to Vegas . In light of the horrific shooting and how this organization has taken a lead role in assisting with the healing it almost seems that they were meant to be there all along . In addition , the Vegas Golden Knights are the best expansion team in NHL history . Now maybe it was I who was crazy to think that this was a crazy move . A cup contender already . Now that's just amazing . VEGAS STRONG .

    I love watching the knights play. To me, it really seems like a bunch of (relatively) young guys finally getting a chance for some real ice time. IIRC I heard that about %70 of Vegas' players are on pace for career high seasons. That's amazing, obviously, but I think a lot of it comes from the fact that a bunch of young guys are finally getting 20:00 of ice time per game, and you're seeing some guys shine. Most notably, in my opinion, is Karlsson

  • @queenofyeay

    @queenofyeay

    6 жыл бұрын

    Karlsson is probably benefiting the most from the move to Vegas and more ice time, his confidence at this point is soaring. Erik Haula might get the nod for the guy who has received the second biggest boost, he's already at his career high for goals and assists, on track for 30 goals & 26 assists. Alex Tuch being a rookie doesn't have much previous NHL experience, but with increased ice time he too has flourished with 4 points in his last five games giving him 9 goals & 12 assists in 37 games. Tuch continues to improve and is a huge presence on the forecheck. I agree with you, LOVE watching the Knights play.

    I think saying that the EXPANSION TEAM Vegas Golden Knights season at 29-10-2, 2nd in the NHL in points, 1st in the Western Conference... has gone "really well so far" is a bit of an understatement. Even with a rash of goalie injuries that would have choked a lesser team, the Knights kept bobbing along. Now that both of their GREAT 1st and 2nd stringer goalies are healthy, the Knights have gone 13-1-1 in their last 15 games... People, this isn't merely playing really well, this is playing outstanding, elite hockey... When you add FOR AN EXPANSION TEAM the superlatives stack up upon themselves one after another!

    C'mon surely you KNOW that the inaugural St. Louis Blues had no business being ANYWHERE near the Stanley Cup finals. They were 27-31-16 on the year and third in the West. Fortunately the Blues got to play only the expansion Western division teams to reach the finals. So, while St. Louis immediately made an impact, making three Stanley Cup Finals appearances in their first three years, it was all smoke and mirrors, they were swept on all three occasions, and have not reached the Cup Finals since then. I repeat, those Blues did not belong in the finals, they hardly even belonged in the playoffs

    Yeah, you got your facts a little messed up. St. Louis entered the league in 1967 along with 5 other teams. To give the new teams some incentives and to ease the obvious talent difference between the expansion teams and the Original 6 teams, the NHL settled the expansion teams into their own Western Division. The majority of the time the Western Division would play each other in the regular season and once the playoffs started they would not play an Original 6 team until the Finals when the Western Division champ would meet the Eastern Division champ... St. Louis, to their credit, was the Western Division champ for it's first three years. BUT were promptly swept in the finals each year. Eventually the NHL changed that format for the Stanley Cup, but it does leave us with the grossly misleading fact that the St. Louis Blues did indeed make it to the Stanley Cup finals it's first three years, though they did not actually belong in the finals any of those seasons...So, yeah, the Blues were 27-31 and -14 in 1967-68, the Knights have already won more games than the Blues did that season.

    Oh, sure! The St. Louis Blues in their inaugural season were 4 games under .500 at 27-31 and were a MINUS 14. On the other hand, the Knights now have the best record in the NHL, are 31-11- 3 and a +31 are definitely worse than those pesky St. Louis Blues!

    So, you know how expansion drafts work, right? Did you actually think that St. Louis was a team of all rookies? The Blues top three scorers that season were: "Red" Berenson a great player with 7 years of NHL experience who was 27, Gerry Melnyk with 5 years of NHL experience who was 32 and Jim Roberts who had 4 years of NHL experience and was 27. The Blues average age was 27.4 (I just did the math on that) the Vegas Golden Knights average age is 27.3, a little over a month younger on average than St. Louis was.

    Vegas Golden Knights are a bunch of cast offs trying to prove themselves.. Yes they are a good team... But once those players sign those extensions or get new contracts THATS IT!! DONE! They'll get Knocked out in the second round by the Ducks or St.Louis.

    You mean like... in future years? I'm confused what this post was about. The Ducks didn't even show up to play in the playoffs, they were terrible, it would have been better if they didn't go at all and save their fans and their players a lot of embarrassment. The Blues weren't even IN the playoffs at all, but they shared one thing in common with the Ducks -- neither won a single game lol. PS: One win from the Western Conference Finals. Win or lose, it has been a heck of a ride.

    Of course they're the greatest expansion team ever. How else would the other 30 owners thank the Golden Knights for each getting $16.7 million USD from the Vegas expansion fee? Drop their head to head games with Vegas, especially at their building. Kings already laid down twice to them! THATS HOW AND WHY THEY WIN. Otherwise, they're a 2-75-5 team

    Jason I'm sorry, but throwing hockey games is difficult. You have to make it look like you're playing, and the puck can take some really weird bounces. One or two weird bounces and you just won a game you were trying to lose. NHL teams aren't payed to lose games, and lots of teams trying to tank still win games.

    ...but they're professional athletes, are they not? You don't think they could put on a show? Again, they are "professionals" at this. They get paid a lot of money, and they don't look at a win or loss the same way us fans do. Sure it's league of unionized players, but it's a BUSINESS. If they have to lay down for a team that needs to win now in an untested market, they'll do it. You think Bettman would leave that up to chance? Hell no.

  • @loganmacmaster7721

    Jason You make a very good argument, but the players wouldn't stand for that. That's how a lockout happens. Sure, there are some players who just want money, but many want one thing and one thing only, to hoist the Stanley cup. No team is going to throw games if they have even a slim shot at making playoffs. Vegas is doing this good because every player on that team wants to prove to their former team that they made a mistake not keeping them, and those who work harder succeed more. Also, if you watch them play they play a very interesting game, which no other team in the league plays, so teams don't know how to defend it because they don't face it often.

    I hope I'm wrong. But hey, it's also a league that hasn't had any of its 7 Canadian franchises win the Cup in 25 yrs too, ya know. It does make ya wonder. Look, NHL players all champions either way you look at it. Their dream is to get paid to play a sport they love for 6 month for as many years they can. Accolades and trophies are great to have, but that doesn't put food on the table. Income does. The moment it stops, that's when they feel like we do when our team loses game 7 of a cup final.
