The whole "I hate my spouse" thing makes me want to gag, but it simultaneously makes me wonder if some of these people in straight marriages are unaware/closeted non-cishet people. Perhaps they were victims of hetero/amatonormativity themselves, thinking they had to/being forced to marry someone of the opposite sex, but they don't actually love the person they're with. My dad thinks this could have happened to his mom, who he suspects was aro/ace despite getting married to his dad, because they fought a lot and she didn't seem very happy in her life or her relationship. Food for thought I guess.

  • @GThe-su9kl

I don't think that this is the case. My mom and dad hate each others even to this day. They were "lucky" because when they got together, divorce or separation was not stigmatized anymore so they did not have to live the rest of their lives together. I don't think that my mom is aro/ace or lesbian (I rather suspect that she might be bi, though I never asked her clearly and I don't want to "force her" into an identity). In the case of my father, it's harder to tell since I never saw him in a relationship. So, TL;DR : I think that the "I hate my spouse" trope has more to do with the mental state of a generation that lived when divorce and/or separation was illegal.

  • @jasmijnwellner6226

@@GThe-su9kl And in some conservative communities, there is still a lot of stigma around divorce. I imagine there being quite a few people stuck in unhappy marriages who only stay together because they fear being completely rejected by everyone they know, and that breeds resentment. On the other hand, I bet there's lots of people who are happily married who repeat these jokes simply because they've heard them so often, like they don't even think about it.

The one with the babies who are apparently going to be married one day just reminds me of all the times growing up that the adults in my life gushed about how I was definitely going to end up with either one of my two best friends who I've known since we were about 3. Now we're all in our late 20s and it turns out Friend #1 is very happily married to my cousin and they have a baby together, Friend #2 is aro/ace, I'm bi/ace (and transmasc) with no current interest in being in a relationship with anyone and the one time me and Friend #2 actually brought up the possibility of dating each other when we were teenagers, we both immediately agreed it would be much too weird because it felt like we were more like siblings. Moral of the story: shipping babies/infants is weird as hell and it almost certainly won't work out so just...don't.

Fun Fact: It's actually very unlikely that you are going to fall in love with your Sandbox friends. (it's a saying in German, I don't know if it's also a thing in English. It just means that you know each other since you were playing in the sandbox together as toddlers) Like you said, you were like siblings because you were growing up like siblings. It's to make sure that you don't fall in love with a relative and do incest. So yeah, it would be against mother nature to marry your best sandbox friend.

I dodged the whole thing by moving cross-country. Been married for over 34 years to a man who is far more my kind of human. My classmate and I reconnected briefly over the Classmates website. He tried marriage. Failed spectacularly. And still a politically right-wing and atheist piece of work. And if you're """"feminine""" like having makeup or nail art or even long hair or wear too slim of a jean or idk what other bs, then you're either gay and submissive and you do the dishes and you cook and so on because that's considered feminine. It's mind-blowing how deep these stereotypes are implanted into our brains. Just look at the way people react to dads picking up their kids at school vs mums. It should be just a normal thing but it's always "so great" and "your wife must be glad you have enough time" and so on. It's really depressing for everyone.

As an autistic person, I find comfort in the trans community. The feeling of society being intolerant of the fact that people can experience life differently really resonates with my own experiences. I too feel like what I looked like at birth does not accurately portray how I feel inside, and I’ve faced intolerance when “coming out” about my autism to new people, so I’m able to have a great amount of empathy for this community. It’s always fascinated me how the autism and lgbt+ communities are such natural allies. Also, my autism makes my communication style a bit blunt, so apologies if I phrased anything insensitivity. I’m posting this comment with the intent of being supportive and positive ❤

Honestly the lgbtq+ community has taken what everyone else would just consider "rejects" and gave them a chance for a happy life. For example furrys (and no, not the furrys from "THAT" side of the fandom.. we dont support them) and autistic individuals all somehow end up in this community, and I'm not mad about it. I'm glad they have this community as a safe space.

Totaly get you, autistic peolle and trans people face a lot of the same struggles like being patanoid about how we present ouraelfs to not get misunderstood, to pass, not getting rejected, we get hate for sonething we cant change, just for who we are...... I just made the experience, that trans people tend to be not very judgmental, as long as you do not go after them, its a positive interaction for them, which is sad, but takes of pressure to preforme being perfectly normal to a t. In adition, there is a massiv overlap between autists and lgbt+ especially when it comes to ace and genderqueer. It is a match made in heaven

As a happily married person, I have to say having separate blankets in bed has been wonderful for us! We don’t find sharing blankets romantic, it’s just irritating when one of us wants a thick blanket, one wants a thin blanket, or worse when we both want to cocoon in it! Now we enjoy snuggling up in our own appropriately comfy blankets and happily share a bed 😊 It’s always disheartening when these subreddits are done, but they are interesting.

Nice that it works for you, and it makes you happy! My boyfriend and I always had one blanket, but then I wanted a heavy one, filled with glass pearls (don't know if you heard of them), and he didn't. So I bought a small blanket for me. One week later he was really tired of it and wanted to have a big blanket again, so we bought a big heavy one. 😂 Now we are both happily cuddling under one big heavy blanket 😊 Everybody should just try what suits them best, and don't let anybody say otherwise!

My boyfriend and I almost immediately after moving in together decided that we could not share a blanket. He sleeps very very warm, and I can't fall asleep with too much physical contact/if it gets too hot under the blanket. So we each have our own matching (but different colors so we can tell them apart) blankets that we use and if we want to cuddle before we sleep, we do, but scoot apart a bit when we get ready to fall asleep. We also have a very needy 70 lb dog who insists on sleeping between us so we don't have much choice lol I second the other comment, don't let anyone say you can't do something just because it doesn't work for their relationship. If you wanna cuddle at night, go for it. If you can't/don't want to, then don't. What matters is what works in your own life and with your partner.

I'm a woman, and most of the men I've dated have been quicker on the relationship timeline than I have. The "men don't want committment and women want to get married immediately" thing is so dumb. I've seen the Bible study/shoes one before, and that's literally what young Christian girls are taught to think, that the man will always be the head of the household and you have to support and accept his decisions subserviently and pamper him because of it, basically. It's gross. If that's your choice, fine, but don't tell others how to have a marriage. Equality or bust, I say!

We're just friends...who happen to spend almost every day together, and cuddle, and sometimes kiss...but it's totally platonic, seriously! This pretty much went on until the point where I went away to university, and he decided to go to the same uni the next year, so that we'd graduate together. It's now 17 years later, and we're only just now beginning to talk seriously about marriage!

It can take me 4 hours or more to decide between one dish and another for dinner any given night. Relationships work well when you fit strengths to weaknesses. If she's the better book keeper, let her do the finances, if you're the one home in the hour or two before dinner, make dinner, if you discuss the things you are and aren't good at then you can create a well functioning relationship where each person gets to play to their strengths- making everything better.

I also take issue with the straight culture ideas of marriage, or even relationships as a terrible fate, and the merchandising that's sprouted from that idea. But being 'busty' as well, the men's large size sections are a joy for cheaper cotton t-shirts! A pity when you like clothes, but we don't fit within the 'standard' for 'nice' women's clothes 🙄 Physically, I take after my father, and HE, takes after his GRANDMOTHER! I use them as conversation starters for our children (13 and 9,) about healthy vs. toxic gender attitudes and healthy vs. toxic relationship attitudes. Thank you. (Also, my feet are very small for my height. Most shoes are too big for me, so I could not even wear the shoes of my best woman friend, let alone my husband’s.
