    Nope. Not at all with the current rules. Though by those rules in the 80s, the physical 1989 Bad Boy Pistons were definitely a powerful and legendary defensive team that will never be forgotten in history~ Chuck Daly is definitely an all time great legendary head coach the league has rarely seen in it's long history.

    Rodman coming off the bench for 1st All-Defense and almost 10 rebounds is insane. Rodman is so underrated, all of the advanced metrics point to him as one of the more efficient players to ever do it I don't think the 88-89 are the greatest ever, but they absolutely have a better case than I thought. This is a fantastic series, thanks man! Never short of top-quality videos

  • @artmeddaugh6669
    @artmeddaugh66694 жыл бұрын

    I love the way that the 1989 Detroit Pistons were so versatile on both ends of the floor because they went 9 deep in the rotation. Offensively, they mostly played a half court game with their starters, the guards ran their sets with Mahorn and Laimbeer with great execution. But when Rodman and Salley entered the game, and especially at the same time, those two ran those lanes out on the fast break like Gazelles, the pace quickened, they got easier baskets, transition layups, and the youth and energy was on display when those two crashed the offensive boards with dunks, put-backs, 2nd chance opportunities, and more free throw attempts. Defensively, I felt sorry for opposing teams because they couldn't rebound against this team. Rodman, Laimbeer, Salley, and Mahorn would put a body on you, and you weren't going anywhere to get that basketball. It was one shot and done 99% of the time. And what can you say about Laimbeer and Mahorn's "Tap Tap" no layup rule. That's just how the game was played back then. No wonder MJ is so "sore" to this very day! They played rough, physical, a little mean and nasty sometimes, but with the mental edge that got them over their opponents. Masters of psychology they were for sure...and they reveled in it. They had to in order to beat Boston and LA. They enjoyed being heels! The three guard rotation of Isiah, Joe, and Vinnie is one of the greatest of all-time, if not the greatest. All three could handle the ball, pass, rebound, and score. When Isiah sat, the Pistons didn't lose much, if anything, with Vinnie and Joe. Same when Joe sat, Isiah and Vinnie...What is a defense to do against any combo of these three guards? When your back court rotation can easily score 60 to 70 points on any night, your not losing very many basketball games. All three jerseys are retired and hang in the rafters of LCA in Detroit. Aguirre coming over was a breath of fresh air to the locker room. The team's spirits went up, the tension was gone because Dantley was gone, they went on a 25-1 streak, and got refocused going into the playoffs. Mark knew his role on the team and played it perfectly. James Edwards gave the Pistons added scoring punch on the front lines. That fade away jumper was sweet, he could rebound, he played solid, meaningful minutes, and he helped in giving opponents a different look. When you have a rotation of Laimbeer, Mahorn, Salley, and Edwards at the 4 and 5 spots, and play any kind of combination with those guys, and they did, it works out on both ends of the floor. Coach Daly could give any opposing team different looks with different lineups and different combinations. That's what made this team so difficult to deal with, and so special. The 1989 "Bad Boy" Detroit Pistons are a Top 10 Team in NBA History. That 1989 Detroit squad is one of the deepest and most versatile rosters in NBA History, no doubt about! And the 1989 "Bad Boy" NBA World Champion Detroit Pistons are always #1 in my Heart. In my mind there isn't a better team...EVER!! BAD BOYS! BAD BOYS! BAD BOYS! BAD BOYS!

    Should’ve 3-peated the disrespect Isiah Thomas receives is criminal and this team in particular isn’t remembered fondly (and to some extent rightfully so) but to ignore their dominance and all time talent is just disrespectful. I think Isiah in particular gets hammered all time, he should be a top 25 player of all time but isn’t and he had some issues was controversial but he’s an all time great who’s resume can’t be ignored. A video on his career or a “how good was he” video on him would be excellent.

    I think the "superteams" like the 2017 Warriors, the 2013 Heat, etc, are overrated, they sacrifice their bench and.chemistry for stars who (if they aren't peforming well) will wreck the team. The Heat in 2011 lost massively due to Lebron being bad. The 2019 Warriors went down 3-1 without KD because they lost Harrison Barnes for him

    ForeverTired2000 hah he overthought. The Mavericks had a um, weird defense where their two main scorers were poor but Shawn Marion on LBJ and then Tyson Chandler at the rim confused him. He was missing free throws which took his aggressiveness away and that fouled up the shear offense. LBJ actually averaged 18ppg on 48% shooting with his usual rebounds and assists but just stopped shooting in the 4th. Dirk, who everyone thinks went God-mode averages 24pg on 41% shooting. It ducks because Wade was the best player in the series and had his 2nd best final.

I remember watching those Detroit teams play and was amazed at how they still won when I felt there were other teams around like the Celtics, Knicks, Bulls and Pacers that we’re definitely better. It really was the fouling/mind games they would play on other teams. Their biggest advantage was Mahorn/Laimbeer/Rodman. People were scared of them.

    I *don't* think the '89 Pistons are the greatest team of all time, for me that's the 72 & 10 1996 Chicago Bulls. Don't mistake, they're a great and deep basketball team, but remember that the Celtics were without their MVP Larry Bird, and the Lakers were without their MVP Magic Johnson as of game 2, so the only *healthy* contending team they beat that post-season were the Bulls, who were still very young, and lacking talent and depth in their bigs, which really hurt in the pre-flagrant foul era. The '96 Bulls, on the other hand, dropped only one more post-season game than the '89 Pistons, but they did it against rosters which had all of their talent on the floor and in their prime.

    Also, those two games the Bulls dropped to the Sonics in the Finals, I feel were more a case of overconfidence than the Sonics really being able to do that. They went up 3-0 with such ease, they just assumed the 4th win would be a given, and the Sonics had nothing to lose so they played all out.

    Absolutely agree.All starters were perfect fit in their roles. Along with the starters, Vinnie, Rodman,and James Edwards were significant talants. Edwards had started for the pacers earlier, and was the low post scorer that balanced the outside shooting of Laimbeer. Chuck Dailey was the perfect coach. Isaiah was unstoppable. I only wished they kept Dantley. As great as they were, the 85 Lakers and the 86 Celtics were better.

    In the bad boys prime, if allowed to play real basketball; this was the greatest team in NBA history. They really won 3 straight titles. They competed against two of the greatest teams during their prime. The bad boys went 9 players deep. That is the difference. They would wear down all the others candidates. Rodman at his prime is the difference maker; but you have to remember offensive weapons like the Vinnie the microwave with his mid-range game, Edward the buhda with his unstoppable fall away , and Mark Aguirre.

    Under the rules being played in the 80's, NOBODY beats them (With the possible exception of the "86 Celtics). Under today's rules, with the intelligence and talent on that team, and Daly, they adapt, they play a different style of game. They invented the style of play now played, believe it or not. Laimbeer would thrive, set the record for most 3's in a finals game (then 6). No hand checking? ROFL, good luck slowing their guards down. Athletic enough? Plenty. Can they shoot well enough? Quick enough? Pass well enough? Could Daly hang? Were they adaptable enough? Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes. Would they win it all? Maybe, I think their competitiveness would so dwarf today's player's that it would make up for most of the style and rule disadvantages they would face. They would not be the killers they were, but the thing that most people don't understand about them, is that they were so smart that they would find the edge of the rules, wherever that was, and live there. They would play to the rule book as it is now, and still be the team that you would rather shoot jump shots on, but there is a problem with that. Oh, yeah, their all-time greatest 3 guard rotation, that would not blink under today's rules, and still make it a nightmare for you to get your jumper off or get it to the guy you want to. Name me a team MORE equipped to play in any era (with the possible exception of the '86 Celtics). Cat got your tongue? Interesting though, I think the minutes for the players change. I think Salley and Aguirre get more minutes in today's game. Think this lineup. Isiah, Dumars, Aguirre, Rodman/Salley, Laimbeer. Think that starting team could score and defend in today's game? Johnson (would score at will today), Edwards (his fade-away not stoppable under today's rules) , Mahorn off the bench for D and rebounding. Isiah, Dumars, Laimbeer, Salley, Edwards, Vinnie, all get BETTER under today's rules. And Aguirre? Forget about it. This team could go for 150 under today's rules. And still hold you to 115. Rodman would adapt, and so would Mahorn.

I def think it’s one of the deepest teams ever but they feel like overachievers to me rather than the best team. Playing “their rules” I don’t think anybody would beat them. As a pistons fan it kinda sucks that defense/physicality keep getting nerfed in the the NBA but thats how the cookie crumbles I guess
