Truth! I lived and worked in South Korea for more than 10 years. To cite one of many examples, I remember when they made all foreigners get COVID tests, but no Koreans. I am American, but when I wore a certain hat in the winter, I was assumed to be Russian and treated badly accordingly. My wife is from the Philippines, and she was constantly treated badly.

Even in Southeast Asia, Philipine maids are discriminated in Singapore. It might not be true to you but it can be true for others. Like I went to that country, and even without prior knowledge about this prejudice, I already felt it just walking around and visiting the sites. The slightly disgusted faces of people when we rode the bus. We are not even doing anything except waiting with them.

Not only kpop, but also pop, global KZreadr, drama, and popularity come from Asia and South America. Europe tends to favor only its own countries. The United States is capitalist and a thorough meritocracy. Like Beyonce and Taylor Swift, one person becomes an idol. If you have the ability and it is known, the United States will come to you with a bundle of money and a contract. Popularity is not something that can be created by putting money in a sack. The country is rich, the people are poor. To get an idea of how poor a population is look at gdp per capita, then compare that to cost of food, accommodation and average wages. India's gdp might look good at a glance but if you actually look at individuals they are piss poor. A "my country is better" d*ck measuring contest only benefits the ruling elite. Nothing is better than having millions mindless drones slaving for you for free. Especially when they are also eager to prove their worth with violence. Nazi Germany cracked the populism code, so it's now common across the western world. You better not fall into that line of thinking

I'm a filipina born in America and came out here to South Korea to teach English for a year. In my experience, she's so correct. I got really disrespected and discriminated for what I looked like (Asian but not korean).. but they failed to see that I am American at heart and mind, and well-educated, regardless of my skin color..I got treated so terribly and was paid the lowest compared to the other foreign teachers.. i was even turned down a teaching job for being "Asian" like ok, seriously?? 😔 it was a nightmare.

I would never go there for working. They treat lots of people really bad, especially women. Just having a look of some videos „rotten mango“ made will be enough to stay away from there. I like K Pop and K drama, but that should not lead to not seeing the reality there. It’s dangerous, especially for women and very racists.

India is not a poor country. We are just humble. I literally make a lot every month and my family owns an Audi. Get this woman some education for her sake. Asia's richest man is an Indian too.

Many people mistakenly believe that Korea is the only Asian country of racism, but other Asian countries are much more discriminatory towards Southeast Asians. The Chinese and Singaporeans never think of other Asians as equal personalities. Japan and Korea are relatively the most moderate. It may be difficult to change their perspective now, but they are doing their best. Rohingya refugees will also feel the same way you do in your country. Don't just think the eyes you feel is unfair and try to change your friends' mind in your country first.

No one said that Korea is the only racist country in Asia. It doesn't help to try to change the subject and say, "oh but look at the others. They're discriminating too." The fact is that, in Korea, racism is rampant towards Southeast Asians and people of color. It's good to be aware of that for change to occur. But sadly things aren't changing because of denial.

Of course. We have to make a comparison. There is a repertoire that you often use to criticize the racism of Japan and Korea. "They are angry about the racism of white people, but look down on SEA." The problem is that your country is the same. Discrimination against tourists or neglect of black people is much worse than Japan and Korea. Korea and Japan have the lowest crime of assault against foreigners in the world. You may think this is simply a matter of security and maybe hide your own racism. But Japan and Korea are constantly trying to improve. That's the difference.

We South Asians also have to face bs everyday. People used to look up to India in the ancient times. Foreigners used to study in Nalanda university. I remember ancient Chinese called India “civilized” and “center of knowledge”. Scientists and mathematicians of the islamic golden age admired our work. Greeks and Romans also used to look up to us. Good old times. Anglo-Saxons and other Westerners are the reason that South Asians face discrimination worldwide. They ruined our image by portraying us as animal f*ckers, street sh*tters, unhygienic (India needs to work on hygiene, I admit, but man often it is over exaggerated), savages, r*pists, cannibals, scammers, etc. West butchered our reputation. We think South Asians face discrimination because of skin color, but that is not the case. When you are brown, people think you are from South Asia, and South Asia has a bad image. Many Italians and Middle Easterners have light brown to medium olive bronze tone. But, they don't face discrimination. It's all about image. Even light skin Indians face discrimination. Just tell them you are Indian and attitude changes. West spreads a sh*t ton of atrocity literature against Indians. We did have good relations with Islamic countries, but West screwed it up by portraying India as extremely anti-muslim. Western media has an amnesia effect on people.

As a Korean, I'll tell you the truth. That's a fucking fact and Koreans especially look down on Southeast Asians. Of course, not all but many people think that way in their mind

As a Chinese living in US, I maybe wrong but I have made friends with more than 10 Koreans, some are my dorm neighbors, some are my lab mate, some are my colleagues. I never feel discriminated. China is also a poor country in terms of income per capital. So my point is I really don’t feel the “racist” in Korean. Some times I even feel Taiwan people is more racist.

She held back telling you the full extent of racism in S.Korea. I travelled a lot there around 2007 to 2009. I had made many good Korean friends in college and wanted to see them. I was very interested in Korean culture, history, and language, however visiting S.Korea quickly changed that. Following Thumper's moms advice, I have nothing good to say, so will stop myself right here. But they basically look down on most of the world and openly show racism like its normal and acceptable. But what really annoys me is S.Koreans love to travel and expect the world to be warm and welcoming hosts to them, however they are terrible hosts to visiting foreigners.

I was engaged to a Korean woman long time ago, we did it for five years, and I was madly in love with this woman, but her parents did not want her to marry me because I wasn’t white, so they made her choose between me or them, and if you know, Korean culture, family is never going to go against family, so she left me, she didn’t want to, but she said her family was more important than me, but I lost a great woman solely because of the color of my skin so, which she says is very true.

I went through the exact same situation. You didn't lose a great woman. If you guys are really compatible then a break up is simply impossible. Koreans are good at appearances, and they have social issues no one would hope to fix.

I don’t understand why some of Korea think those countries are poor. I am 56 years old from Thailand and remember the days when South Korea was poorer than Thailand and came to my country in those days South Korea was struggling to survive and we never insulted them by racism at all. That’s unacceptable!! I would like some South Korea go back and study history. Whatever you behave to the countries you mentioned is disgusting.

Yeah I remember my uncle visiting S. Korea in the 80s and he would tell us stories...not a single dog to be found on the streets cause the Koreans had no money to eat and would skin the dog for all its worth!! Food, jackets, soup, you name it...

I live in South Korea, racism means different things. In the United States, racism means physical attacks, brutality, murder, assault, rape. In South Korea, racism means an ajeossi giving you a dirty look from across the aisle in a subway train or being turned away by an ajumma at a restaurant because she cant speak English or a bouncer turning you away at a club because foreign clientele have been a nuisance in the past. All non-verbal, non-violent racism. I'd rather take the latter than the former.

To all the dumb people barking about GDP in the replies- Having a higher GDP (Gross Domestic Product) does indicate that a country produces more goods and services, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the citizens of that country are wealthier. GDP measures the total economic output of a country, but it doesn't account for income distribution or individual wealth. Looks like some people didn't pay attention in school Edit 2: Guys I'm not against yeonmi park at all, shes a wonderful woman, she has struggled so much in her life. She has my respect. It does. Per capita income is a better measurement of a country's wealth. According to IMF we are one of the lowest middle income countries with per capita income of around USD 2k per month. I'm not saying that 5th largest economy is not a great achievement but we are still very far from being a decent middle income country let alone a rich country.​@@purvashinde3369

SK didn't grew like any other country. It was a sudden boom in economy due to investments from other countries, this js the reason that their mindsets are still in back times. If it had been a slow process of growing, people would have change their mindsets gradually, but mindsets can never be changed suddenly

That's why I can't understand the adoration all these K-Pop fans give these Korean artists. Yes their shows are good and there are some good Koreans but majority are a-hole racists and should never be put on a pedestal. They're physically abusive too from what I'ver heard from many Filipinos working as domestic help in Korea.

I’ll never forget having a layover is Seoul going to the Philippines, was only there for a couple hours walking around and it was the most inhospitable place I’ve ever been to. Many times me and my family tried to ask for help from staff and they all just ignored us like we weren’t even there. it’s ok if there’s a language barrier and there is a struggle to help, but to be extra and not even look in our direction? Disgusting.

India is not poor anymore. They just look poor.

My family business took the VIP customers to South Korea trip in the 2000s and we are from Thailand. We had one tour guide accompanying us from Thailand and another one local guide from South Korea. The local one looked down on us so much and was hardly civil so the whole tour collectively decided to give the total bonus to the Thai guide instead of splitting it half-half between the two guides as originally planned. Never seen someone regretted their behavior so badly as soon as she found out (we gave the bonus to the Thai guide on the bus a day before we left and her eyes lit up when she saw the thick envelope). On the last day she tried to act nice so hard in the hopes of getting some, but too little too late. If you look down on the SE Asians from poor country then our money is too good for you. 😂
