Here is a shout out to all of the Sebastianos out there! Sebastiano is the Italian variation of Sebastian. I’m so glad this video was done, as I now know where my name came from
“Sebastia” isn’t even the only place name derived from “sebastos”: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastopol_(disambiguation)
As a Sebastián born in August, I love this video ❤️. Also in Mexico, usually Sebastian are called Sebas, but I hate this nickname
Sebastian was the name of the kid in The Never Ending Story! He's the one reading the story.
I really like the name Sebastian! Another famous one I kind of hoped / expected to be in here, would be Sebastian Vettel, the Formula 1 driver from Germany, who was a 4-time world champion. Also, a typical variation of the name in the Netherlands is Bas. A possible nickname for them can be Bassie, and here we come to maybe one of the most famous characters in Dutch children's tv, Bassie the clown. Together with his brother Adriaan, an acrobat, he travels all over the world, having great adventures and solving interesting mysteries. He used to be my hero when I was 5. You should look them up, there are a lot of Bassie & Adriaan episodes on KZread, maybe even some with English subtitles. And finally, I'm way overdue with this, but I'm going to look into this Patreon thing and donate something to you. Love your work! :-)
When you listed famous Sebastians, you missed likely the most widely known Sebastian in the world over the past decade or so, the F1 driver Sebastian Vettel.
Seppi here (at least during my childhood) Seppi, Seppl, Sepp is a frequent nickname for Josef in Austria and Bavaria. It derives from the Italian Guiseppe.

In southern Germany and Austria, Sepp is a variant of Joseph, probably stemming from East European influence where the final h is dropped, resulting in "Josep" or "Josip". (The J is pronounced as a Y in German.)
Great video! Very informative and i only recently realized my name and Augustus’ were linked, very cool.
Sebastian Stan has always had a thing with Disney, I remember him as Jefferson Hatter.
Sebastian Cabot starred in the late 1960s US television series called ‘The Family Affair.’ Loved the music during the opening credits. Beautiful visuals, too, during those opening and closing credits.
The Sebastian I know referred to himself as "Batti" as a child. This was in Sweden.
Seppo is also a derogatory term for Americans derived from Australian rhyming slang Yank=Septic Tank - Seppo

The Aussies probably don’t use it to your face if they know you’re American. And incidentally, some Americans from the Southeastern states use “Yankee” only for the OTHER kind of Americans: the ones who wouldn’t let them keep slaves after 1865. That “some” seemed to be gone until our current (outgoing) President began campaigning.

A common Romanian name is Septimu from Latin Septimus. But it's shortened to Septi.
I know a guy named Sebastian who goes by Sebass, with the first syllable stressed so it sounds like "sea bass." He's also said his family called him Sabby when he was growing up, which I find a pretty interesting nickname - the consonants around the first syllable plus the vowel of the stressed syllable (and then a diminutive). More interesting than Topher, at least :)
I don't know anyone Sebastian, but i have a street near me called Mihail (aka Michael) Sebastian (a Romanian writer), and the elementary school i went as a kid had the same name, but in this case Sebastian is a family name and not a birth name ps: Sebastian Stan is from Romania, and we're very proud of him, Stan as a name it is pretty evenly spread in Romania, but we also nickname people who get often in to mishaps as Stan of the Mishap

It's interesting to me that the Finnish have the nickname for Sebastian of Seppo, because my family doesn't have any connection to Finland (being that my side of his parentage is British, and his dad is of Anglo-American stock) and yet my nephew Sebastian is nicknamed Sebo ... so I might have to show him this tomorrow and blow his mind!
sebastian sounds like a butlers name
Very, very wise choosing Seb's face as thumbnail A+++++ decision
I found your channel quite late tbh. I'm getting into writing stories and I gotta say, Sebastian an Augustus are perfect twin names for two successful powerful men :D Thanks, loving your channel.

Cool video man!
Old US tv show from the late 1960's called Family Affair had an actor named Sebastian Cabot who played the family butler named Mr. French.
I’m a Sebastian and I was named after Bastian from the book and film The Never Ending Story, I grew up with Seb, Sebby, Bastian, Bas and Basil 😆 I absolutely loved this video and I learned so much! I’d love to visit Sebastia ❤
Here in Bavaria and also in Austria, Sebastians are often nicknamed Wasti or Wastl or just Wast. Sometimes the _s_ is pronounced like _sh._ In the rest or Germany, Sebi Basti or is used and the pronounciation of _s_ is not changed. Sepp, OTOH, is the nickname for Joseph in Bavaria and Austria.
the constant flashing of your background is a bit tiresome, Patrick.

And Maisie, Maizie. That was a new one for me, from GoT cast :) As is Meghan and Peggy(?!). Meghan I get - it must be a Celtic version. And isn't Margaret a derivation from Magdalene? So all the Madeleine derivations belong to the set as well. Magdalene itself is a Greek word meaning 'a (female) person from Magdala' - was (is?) a place in Israel. It comes from the Hebrew gadol - big, great', the ma- in front makes a noun from a verb or adjective, like here. I think that ma- derives from math - 'what'- Or like 'wha'. :) That would make the noun. the name Magdala mean 'what (is) big - Whabbig'. There are many Hebrew words made like that: Makhshev was a computer I think - so it would be like 'what computes - whaccomputes'; ma'ale means stairs - ale the verb means 'rise': so stairs would be 'what rises'. So in English Magdala would be like 'Bigham, Bigby, Bigdon'. And Mary Magdalene means she was Mary from trhat town or village.
I love my name, I have so many nicknames same call me Sebby or Buster. My brother is also called Augustine which is kinda close to Augustus

In my highschool we had a guy whose nickname was Seppie, which is pronounced the same as Sepi, but his name was short for September.
4:10 Elisabeth/Isabella are such names too
Funny thing about Caesar Augustus, the city of Zaragoza in Spain is actually named after him too. It was originally named Caesaraugusta by the Romans but when the visigoths took over the Iberian peninsula, Latin melded with their Germanic language to create primitive Spanish and the city's name was changed reflecting those changes.
Imre in Hungarian (or Magyar) is Emery in English or Amerigo in Italian... so Imre is America! Lol

As an American my mind should go to either stan or the crab when hearing the name Sebastian but weirdly enough it goes to Sebastian michaelis from black Butler (it's an anime)
This is my name and I didn't know it was "video-worthy"
One of my closest friends are called Sebastian, but we generally call him by his last name: Strid. Using someone's last name as kind of a nickname is kind of common in the circles I move in. Strid also means battle. And not in some etymological "old norse" way either, it is what you would get if you asked google translate to translate battle to Swedish. Or one possible translation anyway. This has in the past given him the nickname "Batte", but that is not something we use anymore.

In Norwegian it's commonly used in military jargon
"Austin" is from an Old French contraction of "Augustine" "Bastian" became a surname in Europe at some point; as a surname it made its way to my parents' native country, Sri Lanka, probably during the Dutch period.
In dutch the name Sebastian is also written as Sebastiaan, shortened as Sebas, Bas, Sebby, Seb (but this one is not really used).
I knew about Augustus being called Σεβαστός in Greek; he is so called in Acts 25. But the month is called Αύγουστος. You may want to look at Donostia, the Basque name of San Sebastián.
Well, I am not from Sivas, but my aunt's husband was from that city and we always called him with "Sivaslı" (from Sivas) nickname. Now, I see we could have just call Sebastian as well. :D Thanks for sharing this cool fact with us.
Also I think the month of August is named after Augustus too. (Using the emperor form of his name)
I have never met anybody named Sebastian (Sebastien is another spelling of it I've seen in famous people like Sebastien Haller the soccer player), but my older brother was named August. He died before I was born. But he went by his middle name Vance instead of his first name.
In Anne with an E, one of the characters is named Sebastian but uses Bash as a nickname
Sebastian the dolphin, Lenny's alias from the Shark Tale movie
Hello! My name is Sebastian 😃 and thanks for the video ! I will have to visit that Sebastia City in Turkey!
I heard 'Seba' is the common diminutive form of Sebastian in Poland. Whereas in the Netherlands I often see Sebastiaan being abbreviated to Bastiaan or just Bas.
Here's another quite usual name (at least in my generation)that's come from a Greek origin and its Nicolas And its meaning comes from Nike that's means victory and laos that's means people thus giving the name victory of the people
Sebastian Stan will always be the Augustus of my heart 😍

My nephew’s middle name is Sebastian! 💙
When I was younger I thout this name is a talking name, describe the thing what happent the Saint called Sebastian, cos I saw him in an old painting.... wounded by arrows and in hungarian the pronanciation of Sebastian souds like an old name made from the word wounded / seb (wound) sebesűlt (wounded) Sebestyén (Sebastian). :D
Bastian = The neverending story 🤗
I think there are a lot of these parings, where there are two names from two different languages that mean the same thing. Some examples would be Peter and Stanley (both mean "stone), Andrew and Karl/Carl ("man"), Basil and Rex ("king"), Nathaniel and Theodore ("given by God"), and so on.

Another interesting case of different names being actually the same is the origins of Santiago, James and Jacob
Sebastian Cabot was an actor who played a stodgy British butler in a 1950s-60s TV series titled Bachelor Father, starring Fred MacMurray as a wealthy construction engineer who was raising his sibling’s three kids (teenager, 5-6 year old, and 3-4 year old) after their parents died. And one of the Marx Brothers used the stage name Zeppo, which could be an Italian spelling of Seppo. Strange how the brothers, though Jewish, all took pseudo-Italian stage names but kept their Jewish surname.
Unfortunately, most Sebastian's I know were bullies of mine - up to three or four during my school years. But there's also Bastian, the main character from Neverending Story, and Sebastian Schulz, the German voice of Zuko and Yugi, so it evens out a little.

As Somebody Who Speaks Welsh, I Can Confirm It's A Pretty Interesting Language, Having A Few Pretty Unique Features, Such As Verb-Initial Word Order, Consonant Mutation, And Some Singulative-Collective Nouns, Although These Are All Shared With Other Celtic Languages, I Believe.
As someone named Sebastian i gotta say i've had an intriguing experience with having it as my name. I've went to two separate middle schools back in the day and two of my classmates were named Sebastian and on the other middle school i had a busmate with the same name and i also have a maternal second cousin named that way. But i guess i got particularly lucky with getting to know as much irl Sebastians as i have since outside of that it's not a too prevalent name unfortunately. As for characters in media with that name there's a rather limited list of characters i've seen with that name so i've always been compared with either that damn crab or to a lesser extent that demon butler dude from that anime Black Butler. Plus the fact that ironically one of my older brothers is named Ariel doesn't help at all... (and yes turns out Ariel is a gender fluid name. Curious, right?) Also where i live people sometimes confuse my name with Esteban though i've gotten used to it over the years. Also when i went to the US a few years back i was suprised that certain people called me "Seba" since no one called me that before. And one more thing, idk if other Sebastians are also bugged by this, but i really get annoyed when folks call me "Sebis". Like, please don't do that.
1:30 This reminds me of how my sister sometimes calls me "Muel" instead of "Sam".
My cousin is named Sebastian, and we call him Sebby and Sebs. So not quite Seppi, but close.
When my mom and my dad were figuring out what name would suit me before I was born, they were going to go with Sebastian. Instead they went with Shadd, because it was incredibly unique, still wonder what my life would be like had they not choose Shadd lol
Commenting from Essex County, MA, US My cousin Sebastian is named after a Rhode Island Bishop.
The Finnish Sepi is the nick name from Seppo, which was first an alternative for the word seppä - 'smith'. Later Seppo specialized as the name - first name - and seppä as the profession. But, Sepi can be the nick name for Sebastian as well - just the name is very rare in Finnish. Now there are some guys in their 20s named like that, and maybe teens, but like pretty much the whole 20th century it was very rare indeed. I think it's likely just because there's B in it, which doesn't originally occur in Finnish. The Finnish P phoneme sounds so soft that English ears may often here it as B - it's unaspirated, meaning there's no H sounding puff of air after the P sound - like in Peter ('P-h-eter'). But I won't be surprised if some Finns associate Seppo with Sebastian - we have anyway names like Antti for Andy, Andrew - so Seppo may look to many to have been born from Sebastian. But it comes from Finnish word for a smith. Also, older church books don't show Finns carrying that name very often. The name registers were kept by the church in the 19th century and before, nit many have survived fires and other hazards past the 17th century. A handful of nobles can track their names till the 14th century - but they're mostly Swedish speaking, who are now a small minority - but with schools and rights protecting their language. Sebastian is much more used in Swedish, also the versions in Finland.
The only Sebastian I can ever remember meeting was a Chilean guy from Punta Arenas. Nice fellow. I got to practice my Spanish a lot, because he preferred not to speak English. He could understand English, though, so if I didn't know how to say something, I could ask him.
My middle name is Sebastián (Spanish spelling), and I prefer it to my first name. So most people just know me by it. Also, in Spanish, most of the time people just call me Sebas.
I think there’s an Albanian version of Augustus which is Augustin
My husband is called Bastian - just Bastian - so many ask whether it is a nickname/short for Sebastian but nope, his parents just really gravitated towards Bastian. He was born in the mid 80's in West Germany. * edited because I apparently can't spell my own husbands's name lol

Bastian has historically been just as common if not even more popular in Germany, because it is simply easier to say and because you can than call them the rediculous things like „Bastel“.
