Are Matt Rhule and Nebraska football about to EXPLODE?

Спорт

On the latest episode of The Solid Verbal college football podcast, we welcome in Mitch Sherman of The Athletic and ‪@LockedOnNebraska‬ to dissect all things Matt Rhule, freshman QB Dylan Raiola, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers program. We talk why it didn't necessarily work out with Mike Riley or Scott Frost, how things appear behind the scenes after AD Trev Alberts unexpectedly left for Texas A&M, the strengths of Nebraska's offense and defense, and the sense of urgency inside the program both with building an offense around Raiola and with what the new Big Ten has in store on Nebraska's 2024 schedule. And more!

With Nebraskas schedule, an 8 win season is a must for the fans and program. Having to endure 6 losses would feel like failure and the continued mindset that we will never emerge from the rut we’ve been in. If we win 8, it means we may see ourselves ranked for the first time in a while. It means we competed during our entire season, had hope to reach the big ten championship game if even just to be in the conversation for just a couple weeks. Finally, it means we can dream of the cfp for the first half of the season and realistically miss out but play a solid team again in a respectable bowl. All those things are so needed.

I thought Nebraska competed like crazy last year. Especially on defense, they were terrific. They just kept finding a way, almost always on offense, to make the worst possible mistake at the worst possible time. It was amazing how many games we had a chance to win in the last five minutes after having 4, 5, 6 turnovers. How many times did the defense hold teams to a field goal or no score at all after we turned the ball over on our own side of the field. All we need is a quarterback who has average accuracy and ball security, and some receivers who get open once in awhile and we'll have a good season. The pre-season hype is that we have both. We'll see. If we are not at least 5-2 after the first 7 games we're in trouble. That's not to say that there aren't beatable left on the schedule, just that they're better than teams we will face in our first seven games.

Most of us husker fans are still shell shocked by the Frost era. It was the lowest point in the programs history. It was the the final straw that seemed to break the fan base. It seemed to start with the "jet sweep" pounding from Wisconsin in the Big 10 championship game. Pelini had worn out his welcome with most fans and the administration. Mike Riley was the most deflating hire i have ever seen. Most fans were like, WHO? Then we had the crazy amount of HOPE and Kool Aid after the hiring Frost. The Frost era was SOOOOO bad. It was so many things from the home opener in the first season getting cancelled, to the covid season, to the BIG 10 stacking the deck annually against Nebraska, to the complete flame out against Georgia Southern, to the Mickey Joseph arrest after the season which stole all the momentum after knocking off Iowa at Kinnick. I am totally wait and see with Matt Rhule. Here's a coach that is a little bit over .500, never coached at this level in college, leaves each program after 3-4 years, and just got ran out of Carolina mid season. What i have seen, is a complete professional, with vision, direction, and a plan. The program seems to be heading in the right direction, but haven't we all said that before. My fear, is that Rhule will get the program relevant and bounce to PSU. But, so far, i have really liked everything that i am seeing from the culture, to the coaching, the recruiting, the exposure of the program, etc.

These are all fair points. Even though Mitch stated that the problems with Nebraska pre-dated the Frost era, there's no doubt that there is scar tissue from his tenure. Will be fascinating to see what Nebraska looks like this season. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I love these team specific podcasts. The comment that recruiting under Scott Frost wasn’t a problem is laughable though. Recruiting has been a problem ever since Nebraska left the BIG12. They couldn’t recruit Texas (produces the most NFL players) like they did when they were a member of the conference (same for Colorado). Frost came in and he thought he could continue to recruit Florida based on his relationships from UCF days. He didn’t put an emphasis on recruiting Texas (possibly he couldn’t as he didn’t have the same draw as a BIG10 member you weren’t playing Texas teams). Maybe under the new world of college football (transfer portal, NIL, etc) they’ll be able to recruit at a higher level… but Matt Rhule has brought in Texas high school coaches and has relationships from his relationships from Baylor days. Nebraska was a thing of beauty in the 90s, think Rhule has them headed in the right direction via recruiting Texas.

Frost brought in pretty good players, but his problem was he couldn't keep them. Every year under Frost the team's best receiver or best running back or better defensive player would transfer out. Even Adrian Martinez eventually left when it became apparent that Frost was a lame duck. Someday all the locker room dysfunction will come to light turning that time.

I think considering we are third in returning production in FBS and that we won 5 games last year 6-6 would be a disappointment. 7 wins is my personal baseline for this year and I think maybe (if we’re even better than us fans think) we CAN win 9 or maybe even 10 games with this schedule. either way, I’m not sure I can wait 2 1/2 more months for the season to start! GBR

When we look at this 2024 schedule. IF we keep key positions healthy, we should be able to win 8-9. 10-11 is not out of the question if Dylan plays like he did in the spring game and doesn't turn the ball over. But if we get the injury bug at key positions or Dylan catches what Jeff Simms caught, then I think we win 6-7. Regardless, missing a bowl game with this schedule would be a monumental failure.

Nebraska hiring Mike Riley and expecting success dropped that once-majestic program down to levels of disrespect not seen since Rutgers. For me at least. I will never understand.
