The power scaling is bad on Ryzen CPU-s, hence more cores equals more performance even if power limit is the same. Jarrod should have mentioned this. Lots of people will be confused and go buy quad core ryzens for thin and lights instead of 8 cores even if they have the money and need more performance.

There is a PCI-e lane difference for the H and HX series Alder Lake CPU. H series only gives you x8 PCI-E 4.0 for the GPU. The HX series originates from the desktop CPU, so it has x16 PCI-E 5.0 lanes for the GPU . For gaming use, just turn off the E-cores of the HX, and now you got all the power budget to shove into the P-cores, with more L3 cache , it will smash the H series.

I discovered that 6 core is great if the power and clock control are right. Plus with 12th gen improvements it makes sense going as high as the i7. That said having those extra cores for occasional multicore performance can be helpful. Especially if you game while having heavy rendering application. Better to get more for your money than keeping it. Awfully bad. I just wished those E cores would be more, well, efficient.

the E cores are just terrible implementation. they need to be way lower wattage, maybe even lower clock. and less of them. like 4 E cores is probably plenty, since they're on the E focus anyway. otherwise it should just whip out the performance

16 cores for heavy renderings or calculations will definitely be useful whereas for purely gaming/streaming? I must say, kinda overkill... Not to mentioned the price point of stock config & any available upgrades for it to boot... That's a lot of time & money to spend... With the current rate of advancement in I.T, It'll say you'll be paying premium for a short amount of its life cycle if you're simply buying it to flex the "LATEST & GREATEST" at hand... Still as always great presentation... Cheers!

This is interesting, however, it would be more interesting to see the two CPUs head to head in 3D modeling and video editing scenarios, because: 1- The HX isn't necessarily a "Higher tier" CPU, it just has more cores, and they're both the same price for the reason in #2. 2- The H series has better integrated GPU (intel's 13th gen, while the HX has the 11th gen if I'm not mistaken) 3- Number 2 means that the CPU's codex which sometimes are better than Nvidia's for certain video playback and rendering works. 4- Games probably won't benefit from these 13th gen GPU codex as much. 5- So while The HX has more punch, the H has more brains, in a way. Kinda like German cars vs American Muscle lol My only issue is that the HX version is in the Legion 7i, while the H is in the 5i Pro... And while both have the same cooling, the 7 has better speakers and overall build quality, so I'm leaning towards the HX because of the other components that come with it in the higher end legion 7, gosh, I don't know why laptop companies never make perfect laptops it's like they intentionally mess up certain aspects lol. Thanks Jarrod, this was really great!

Zen 4 16 core laptop parts are supposed to be almost 75% more power efficient at 65W. Now, I know AMD has never had 16c/32t CPUs in a laptop before, but their move to TSMC N5 based on desktop parts shows that at 65W TDP an almost 75% uplift, and since laptops are getting a 16c/32t CPU I have to believe that the performance improvements are going to be VERY impressive, more so in laptops than desktop since N5 is most efficient at lower power levels. I know the Intel die hards don't care, but for the rest of humanity you should REALLY wait if you need more cores because nothing Intel can put out will touch AMD 16c/32t laptops. They have now gone the same route as Intel in having thin graphics so it's almost completely power for the cores. Those laptops should be able to push REALLY high performance at a 65W TDP, but 60 - 80W should be the sweet spot for those CPUs and that's in the range where these Intel 7 based laptops are struggling with power to get two more p cores to give any benefit. Right now the math suggests AMD laptops in the 20 - 80W range with Zen 4 should be the most performant until Intel can come out on a smaller node. And it should pretty much be any workload, even the ones where the hardware accelerators boost 12th gen CPU performance such as stream processing.

Main games like WoW or PoE and also able to play things like Cyberpunk, Rdr2 or Gta 6 when it comes out etc. I know i can change the ram or connect another screen but lets say i wont change anything about them. For gaming you focused on all the wrong components. For gaming you have to focus on the Graphics Card AKA Video Card AKA GPU. Spend more on that. You can find a Legion 5 with 3070Ti or if you want most bang for your buck, maybe a 3070, but if you want it for the next 6 years... Good luck, since new gen hardware is coming out literally next year, so we never know how games will look like in the next 3-4 years. If you need to choose, always go for better cpu for games, 11800H >> 5800H for games. Because on the long run, you can always get a external monitor or lower your graphics from max to mid…but if the cpu can’t can’t push it past 30fps then there is nothing else to do.

Hmm. . .It's interesting to see history is repeating itself. We took some leaps and bounds in recent history to adding more cores to CPU's and it really seems like we're hitting the upper limit of what you need. It's clear if you use adobe for anything work related that more is better. But wow if you do anything else I'd stick to the 12900H. Though I'm ironically still running an 8 core cpu in my main desktop. So anything new there would be a boost. 🤣

The issue is, if you have 1 gallon of milk🥛and have 6 kids to give it to evenly they will always get more milk than if you evenly give the same gallon to 8 kids. This does not mean less powerful it just means each individual core is getting less power resulting in lower scores. Core wise the HX is not much different, the main difference is in the high end where the extra cores are needed. This is just math, but it is good your explaining this to people. If Intel would have adjusted it so that 2 e cores would shutdown as the demand for power goes up you would have seen better results.

If price is not a concern go for the 12900HX. For faster rendering, it depends on the program you are using, most rendering engines are CPU only or GPU only. 3dmax you can choose CPU or GPu, you need to test to see the best scenario for your machine. corona is CPU only. Vray is CPU and VRay-gpu is well…GPu…

When you run a program that utilizes both gpu and cpu, it will never reach the max wattage for the cpu anyways for laptops, correct? If that’s the case, do these benchmarks actually matter in real world usage? I noticed that my 12900HK reaches 75-80W during stress tests, but in real world use, I’ve never seen it go above 45-50W.

Yeah, it's even the case for my i7 6700 hq, cpu is almost never maxed or close to max even on high loads. It's the graphics and ram for the most part. Granted I don't do 4k editing but even in video editing, ram and gpu are still prioritized.

@@unknowncrash1 Yeah it seems that we have reached their power/thermal limits way before the clock/performance limits for laptop CPUS. My cpu should be able to reach 44x or higher on clocks but it caps at 38-39x due to high temps. I bet you’d get more performance just using liquid metal or water cooling over getting a higher tier cpu for all recent cpus. Only other reason I can see someone justifying these new top of the line cpus is if they are actually much more efficient in terms of temp and power usage.

GT77 and it's Creator X17 clone seem to be only ones currently, excluding the 7670/7770 Dell Precisions with CAMM modules and nearly twice the pricing for the "mobile workstation" key phrase markup... Furthermore, it seems that MSI's 4x DIMMs solution is hampered heavily upon full mem utilisation - 4x32GB means downclock of the memory to 3600MT, so the performance could be even worse if you try 64GB in 2xDIMMs for H-series and in 4xDIMMs for the HX series... My guess is the H would turn out victorious in all power levels tests then...

Ryzen 5800h for instance performs better than 5600h at the same 45 watt power limit, as lower the clockspeeds - the more efficient a CPU runs and therefore more performance per watt.

The max battery capacity allowed in airplanes is 99.9 Wh. That means that if the laptop consumes 99 W, the battery will last one hour. All gaming laptops have less than 1 hour of battery life at full load. The max life depends a lot on the settings used, the max power draw on the CPU and GPU (if there's GPU) the screen resolution & brightness, and many other small things (that do add up). If you limit the CPU at 10W and disable the GPU, it should be able to last for 6 hours, maybe more (max 9 hours). And for Intel chips with so many cores and usually so many slots for RAM and SSDs and USB ports, having lower than 10W for the CPU or all the other components needing less than 5W is kind of impossible. Technically, if you disable cores on the CPU (to only have 2-4 P and/or 4-8 E cores) and have a laptop with just 2 RAM sticks, just one power-efficient SSD etc, then having less than 10W consuption should be doable, and the laptop still working decently in light tasks (office + browsing with few tabs)

You can use HWiNFO64 sensor view during a benchmark (e.g. Cinebench or Prime95) to see how much your CPU consumes in each profile. For manual tweaking, you might be able to use Intel XTU.
