EVs Are Losing The Electric Future // feat. James Freeman

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thanks to California Automobile Museum for letting us show off their original GM EV1! Go see it for yourself: www.calautomuseum.org/
Million-dollar EV maker Rimac says their next car won’t be electric. Unsold Teslas are filling up parking lots. And big automakers like Mercedes are canceling future EVs. Is the electric future dead? Let’s find out!
EV sales took a big hit at the beginning of 2024, but bybrids got more popular. Are hybrids replacing EVs? The real story is more complicated than that, of course. In this video we talk about how EVs and hybrids went from novelty to commonplace, and if the tide is turning for hybrids. Includes the GM EV1, Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, and of course Tesla Model S.

    One of the problems with full EV over hybrid at least near where I live in the Northeast is that thanks to the housing crisis more people are living in apartments than houses which makes home charging nearly impossible. combine that with a very low number of charging stations and no one wants a pure EV.

  • @Conservator.

    That’s an issue for the (local) government to solve. The Netherlands has many street chargers. At one point, they had more than 50% of all chargers in Europe (and it only has a population of 17,5mln). Charging is no issue over here. We live in a flat and densely populated country that’s suits EVs more than other countries and still EV sales have dropped here too. The main reason is price, I think. EVs are significantly more expensive than ICE vehicles.

    As a Tesla owner, I agree with this. I live in a house with a two car garage with a Level II charger, so owning one is not a problem. I also just road tripped the Tesla from NY to FL. Tesla Superchargers were not a problem, in fact with all the driver automation, great infotainment, trip planning, power, ability to keep HVAC running, etc. it was one of the most comfortable cross country trips I have taken. The inconvenience came when the hotel we were at for 10 days did not have working level II chargers. Same as apartment dwellers! In addition to that, the USA outlet choice versus Europe I think bites us with this. Most of the world uses 240 volt outlets, but North America choose 120 volt. It even hurts the performance of our vacuum cleaners, coffee machines, etc. but it’s not as noticeable. Where it is noticeable is outlet charging in a pinch. IMO, in Europe you could outlet charge much more realistically in a pinch versus the USA, which is virtually useless if you drive more than 20 or 30 miles in a day.

  • @Conservator.

    @Conservator.

    13 күн бұрын

    @@billm47645 Normal European outlets can charge with only 3.7kW. Most EV owners with a driveway will have a 3 phase 16A 11kW charger installed. You can have 240V outlets (for washing machines for example), can’t you? At 16A that would still only give you the 3.7kW.

The newer Bolt is selling well. Kind of amusing though, as Volt & Bolt are spelled the same in Korean. The biggest selling EVs here though are the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai ioniq 5. But EV sales here are huge!

    For me, and I suspect for many, it's too soon to rely on a pure EV. The infrastructure just isn't there yet. But a rechargeable plug in hybrid is the best of both worlds. In a pinch you can use gas. And with very minor modification a hybrid can be used as a generator in the event of a power outage. You let the gas engine run on idle and it can charge batteries that can run your house if need be. That could be a very useful feature if you live somewhere with a fragile power grid.

    Automakers need to focus on making affordable EVs which don’t prioritize the 0-60 times or horsepower. I switched from ICE to EV last year and yes, range anxiety was a concern then, but isn’t any more. It may take a while, but society desperately needs to move away from burning fuel for general transportation, and we need to do it 20 years ago.

But then I was regularly doing over 250+km trips (one way) with no option to recharge a car, 3 passengers and full trunk. That plus regular trips to a local track (100+ km away) with full cargo capacity of a car used (if we weren't driving with all seats taken, rear seats would be folded to accomodate more junk in a trunk). As someone who ain't rich enough to live in a house with garage, home charging ain't for me. And even if I had this option, EV wouldn't work for this 10% of a time. And that 10% is crucial.
