Are Guitars A Good Investment?

On this episode I explore the idea that high end guitars are "a good investment" or that they "hold their value" as opposed to cheap guitars which supposedly do not hold their value. What do you think? Are guitars a good investment?

100% great analysis and advice. I told people for years to invest in tax free mutual funds for reasons of investment. Many however want to go with the “get rich quick” model which has devastating results. Now, with that being said. I have a few guitars that could be considered investments long term. One is a limited run, one is a Gibson Les Paul and one is one that was made a year before the signature artist had passed. Did I buy these for reasons of investment? Oh goodness no. I bought them to play them. And that is what I do. Now I have cheaper instruments and a few expensive ones. They are all treated the same. They each have their own job and they are there to perform the job. Don’t ever buy a guitar as a reason of investment. Unless you just get an unheard of deal and you can flip it quick with a big profit. But those things don’t often happen.

"Rest assured, the landscape of music production has drastically changed with the advent of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), virtual instruments, and AI. As AI continues to evolve and become more sophisticated, it’s conceivable that within the next 2 to 10 years, traditional instruments like guitars may become less essential in music production. My DAW, for instance, is equipped with a plethora of virtual instruments that I can utilize during song production, negating the need for a physical guitar. I can simply incorporate the desired instruments as and when needed. We’re no longer in the era of the 70s, 80s, 90s, or even the Elvis days, where a host of studio musicians were indispensable for recording sessions. Nowadays, anyone can produce their own music right from the comfort of their home studio using a DAW. In fact, most of today’s music is produced this way. Anyone can create their own album and upload it directly to platforms like Spotify, eliminating the need for traditional record labels or a team of studio musicians." this modern tech world has even revolutionized live music venues..

I buy a guitar because I want to play it. I've never bought a guitar thinking that someday I'd sell it. EVERY guitar I've owned I *intended* to keep forever. I've finally got to a point that I'm REASONABLY sure I'm going to keep every one that I have until I die.

If you have a guitar/collection of guitars like in my case' write down what the guitar cost new/any upgrades/if it's a limited edition or special edition/if it's still in production/condition of the instrument/average saleling price etc... document everything about the instrument' what you have invested in the instrument' leave websites so that they can be looked up' and put it in the case with the instrument. The majority of kids/grandkids don't know the value/prices of an instrument and would probably sale them for nearly nothing if something were to happen to the owner. People will take the advantage of someone in a situation like that.

I can't remember where I saw it, but someone was commenting on the price they paid for their first "expensive" guitar and they showed the original hand written receipt from 20 years ago. It was awesome.

I don't think of myself as a 'collector,' but I have a few nice, semi-expensive guitars and a bunch of cheap to midprice ones. I mostly buy used and let someone else take the beating on depreciation. Never bought any for investment. A couple were for performing, the rest to have and enjoy playing. The few that I've sold, I broke even or 'made' a little on, selling for cash or trade to friends.

some guitars can be reasonably profitable investments. It all boils down to things like market demand, popularity, collectability, rarity, etc..., similar to any art. For example: a new ES335 DOT I bought back in 91' has increased in value somewhere between 600 to 800$ today. It's a profit, just not one to retire on

I buy what I like, and shop around to get the best deal that I can. That way if I do have to sell, I'll potentially lose less. I have several guitars that have surprisingly gone way up in value. The Gibson Joan Jett Melody Maker, 2011 Moderne, Paisley and Flower Power FSR MIJ tele's, and a MIM Fender Monterey Strat, for example. Probably dumb luck on my part, but I was also aware that most of them were fairly limited runs. Buy what you like, and buy right and you can't lose--you get to enjoy it in the meantime.

"Most guitar buyers are not professional musicians or gig performers, so a $200 guitar is a reasonable investment for their hobby. The reality is that many gigging musicians, even those who invest thousands of dollars in their guitars, primarily perform cover songs. So, one might wonder how many hours of live playing it would take to justify the purchase of a $2000 Fender guitar. The truth is, there’s not a lot of money to be made in being a cover band or gig performer, especially when they’re playing the same old songs we’ve heard countless times. The saying ‘cover bands are a dime a dozen’ holds true. If I attended a live show and heard the same old cover songs being played, I wouldn’t care if they were playing on a Fender or some off-brand guitar from Amazon. I believe that guitar manufacturers produce very expensive guitars to create an impression that if we can’t afford them, we’re somehow lacking. But to sound great and be great, we supposedly need that overpriced, expensive guitar that we just can’t afford, even as a cover band."

Shhhhh…. You made too much logical sense in this video…. And will no doubt upset the label snobs. Don’t get me wrong, I love a nice Fender and have had many in my life. I’m no longer gigging with it, and they began taking up real estate I wanted to allocate to other things. I still have my few “keepers” and a few budget guitars, but I don’t foresee me ever shelling out high dollar figures in the future at this point. Simply isn’t worth the stress of searching and maintaining $4,000 guitars when I can bang the heck out of much cheaper (and equally well built) “budget” or knockoff brands without a care in the world. And for anyone saying knock off brands are garbage, you’d be wise to research the history of Ibanez, a company that started out by making cheap clone copies of Fender and Gibsons in the 1950’s and 1960’s… then they got sued. But that didn’t make them a “garbage” brand did it? 😅

Another thing to keep in mind is, unless we are psychic, we do NOT know what tomorrow has in store for us and you may NEVER get the opportunity to sell your "investment guitar." Now, I did NOT buy it as an investment, but I bought a brand-new Chrome Red American Fender Telecaster HS for about $1,500.00. A few months later, I suffered a Grand mal seizure, traumatic brain injury, six (6) brain surgeries and a paralytic stroke. I am in my fifth (5th) year in hospitals or skilled nursing facilities. I lost EVERY material object that I owned, including that guitar! 😢

I generally buy used guitars for the same reason I buy used cars... Value. In other words... Let the other guy take the hit. I did just buy a 1k+ PRS Paul's guitar se import, but I knew going in I was going to lose half. It's beautiful, plays and sounds nice and feels great great in my hands! I plan on keeping it. I notice that sometimes someone can part out there guitar and get more money out of it, especially the brand names. Seems like all the brand guitars are overpriced these days. Say a fender from the 90s, they at least will retain their value if you sell it. And new fenders used sell for a few hundred dollars less. Probably the vintage stuff would be good investment, that's if you got the money for it. Those into the hobby often will buy and sell guitars, they have to be losing money by doing so, unless they can sell it more than what the bought it for.

As someone who has bought and sold a bunch of guitars the past few years, some new, some used, I can confirm that you will lose money! At least I have. I sold a few at a profit but most at a loss. But it began as a hobby to simply buy guitars to review and discuss then sell them in order to buy more. I certainly wasn’t making money.

In 30 years of buying playing and selling guitars I have yet to make money on a guitar. I lost money on them all (around 40+ guitars in total I guess). Fenders, Gibsons, Ibanez, custom built guitars, cheap guitars, modified guitars etc. So no, not a good investment. It IS however a good investment for my mental health, I relax when I play guitar. Oh, and the more expensive the guitar was, the more money I lost. So no, expensive guitars don't retain value better.

I can't see buying a plastic finished guitar as an investment. Fender Americans are just as plastic as the $200 impulse buy jobbers on Amazon or wherever. Did you look at Gibson or Heritage resale? I'm sure there's an initial drop still, but long term I wonder. I think of Gibsons as holding value when you need it more than a profit avenue through investment. Gibsons usually sell pretty fast if you price them decently on the market and need money--and I mean more than $60 dollars. Plus you've had the joy of playing them in the interim.
