0:00 Intro: What Are Frankentrousers?
Frankentrousers claim to offer the best of casual and formal styling, but are they an evolution of men's or a modern horror?
Before we begin, we need to clarify what "Frankentrousers" are. And no, we don't literally mean these are Frankenstein's trousers.
But much like the similarly monstrous "Frankenshoes" we've discussed in other videos, they are often a hybrid of athleisure or practical pants made with more formal elements, like a pinstripe or glen check pattern.
Because these "Frankentrousers" are usually intended to function and look like dressier pants, they are intended to provide the best of both worlds by bringing the style and formality of dress trousers with the comfort and cost of casual ones.
1:25 Frankentrouser Problems: Trendy elements
2:23 Silhouette
3:17 Performance Fabrics
5:59 (In)formality
7:18 Outfit Rundown
8:19 Verdict: Timeless or Trend?
As to our main question in this video, you can probably guess where we're at in this discussion. In most cases, we believe that "Frankentrousers" are definitely a trend, and one that we hope will disappear over the horizon on an ice raft (that's a literary reference for you!).
If "Frankentrousers" survive at all within classic style, it will likely be more of a casual trouser type, suited to practical wear, but often, they aren't going to be your best option, as we've mentioned.
9:05 How to Wear Frankentrousers Well
→ 1. Utilize only the Frankentrouser elements that you actually need
→ 2. Avoid gathered cuffs and excessive tapering at the leg
→ 3. Employ Frankentrousers as combinational pieces, not in suiting
→ 4. Frankentrousers make the most sense when you utilize them with the more casual styling elements of classic menswear
→ 5. Avoid any obvious design elements that are typical of Frankentrousers
11:46 Conclusion
Do you disagree with us and think "Frankentrousers" are here to stay? Have you managed to make them work for you? Sound off in the comments!

I think it depends from where you buy it. There are brands that make them look cheap then yeah, you would think they are just a trend and are temporary, but there are brands that make them high quality and feel and look like chinos. I have only one frankentrouser from last summer that I bought from HM, they are linen and I like them. I wear a polo shirt over them and no one knows that they are frakentrousers.

It's a trend but it will be a long lasting trend. I don't believe they are designed to replace classic suiting. The summary sums up how easily they can work from elevated athliesure to casual suiting. It just depends on the fabric of choice and the cut. This trend will be alive for at least 20 yrs. They can be very comfortable, forgiving to various body types, designed to be worn w/ no belt or belt optional, the style excels in the hot summer weather and cold weather (looking at the corduroys w/ the draw string and elastic waist band) easily with different styles of sneakers, boots, clogs, loafers , sandals, etc... the Frankentrouser can be either slim, slim tapered & cropped, full, or full and cropped. These are very versatile casual-smart casual style of trousers.

In the end they are track pants, and track pants follow trends in their looks. Right now the trend is mimicking a formal style, next year it could be something else. Golf trousers are my tip for people looking for athletic wear comfort with formal looks. A little expensive, but I've seen these frankentrousers cost more than regular chinos.

As a big guy these are a good idea. I find them more accessible than traditional dress pants. First you would never know they weren't dress pants with a nice untucked polo for casual, a vest (regular or sweater), and nic blazer or sport coat. Pair also with a really nice pair of dress shoes. The ones I buy are just dress pants with an elastic /drawstring waist. The issue with this video is that it only focused on one type. I have seen so many variations of this pant even in traditional cuts and fabrics of dress pants. Also being a bigger guy these tend to have much bigger size ranges than traditional dress pants and a better fit for big and tall men. They tend to have a less restrictive cut and more sturdy made fabrics. More big and tall manufacturers are offering these in a dress pant version alongside the more casual version. ********** Also these are great for people with medical issues where traditional dress pants may not be a very wearable option. *stomach issues where elastic flexible band would be more comfortable *arthritis - who may not be able to manipulate buttons and fasteners *people who may need a nice options but need easily washable and durable clothing such as those who need bathroom assistance.

I don’t necessarily disagree with the critiques of this particular type of garment, but I think it’s funny how the comments are almost entirely groupthink, everybody just blindly agreeing with and echoing whatever sentiments are presented in these videos. Folks, part of being stylish is thinking for yourselves. Also remember that any garment, whether it’s a pair of classic trousers or a modern performance button-down, will look, feel and fit totally differently from person to person, so try things out and come to your own conclusions about what works for your taste, comfort and body

I sorta agree. It's too soon to tell. If these pants are still at the shops for over a few years, it must be because people want them. Then this video will look wrong and kinda snobbish. After all, companies don't care about the opinions of these fashion gatekeepers, but what they can sell. If they can sell these pants as dressy and functional, people will buy thinking they can have a cake and eat it too. Hybrid dress sneakers started taking off during the pandemic, GG made a video denouncing those Frankenshoes in 2021, and they are still sold in 2024. Like, how long should we wait for it to end, 4 more years? The casualisation train can not be stopped, and we will see more hybrids of dressy and casual/athletic clothing. At a certain point, you're out of touch and soon irrelevant.

@@Colossus823 They adhere to a style that has endured the test of time, and thus, still working and they have good advice on that. But at the same time, it is an style which fades in its versatility because other alternatives have appeared over the decades and still remain. I have yet to see some video of a new trend that they consider that will stand, they judge poorly; I guess that they would have been against jeans or chinos when they appeared and stick adamantly to wool trousers. Said so, I don't like the rubber band or the string but I own several more discrete pants that fit me incredibly well, to the point of no needing a belt to keep them all day and the slim cut favours my legs without being skinny, but I wouldn't recommed to muscular guys or guys with a big bottom.

@roderic3261 At the end of the day, no one knows. I am sure things like suits will still exist, but maybe only for real special occasions. As office wear, it is dying, crushed by the casualisation train. If some parts remain in daily use through these hybrid clothes, I consider that a win. But I agree with your assessment. I have no doubt that if any of them would be at the same age thirty years ago, they would have called smart casual simply dumb, and chastised anyone who would have dared to wear chinos, or worse, jeans, under a blazer.

  • @simonyu8838
    @simonyu8838Ай бұрын

There are thankfully versions of these that keep any drawstring on the inside and a great many done in solid colors or more muted patterns. Looking through a few offerings from makers of rtw suits though, they seem to have chosen some of the most heinous designs possible. Even the ones made with natural fabrics or that reduce the outside sweatpants like elements are very much casual wear though. These do have a place for some things like social dancing, where the athletic aspects come in handy but actual gym wear looks out of place. Dancewear that mimics the look of classic menswear has been around for decades but mostly catered for ballroom dress codes. I wear some linen and cotton versions of these for swing dancing, something where pants that draw attention to leg lines can be a benefit. And where actual dress trousers can tear during some of the more athletic movements, something that happened to one professional during a competition in front of an audience, judges, and cameras at an event I attended a few months back

Yes, but style and formality are constantly evolving. The suit itself was once considered extremely casual, for example. Now it’s one of the more formal items a guy can own. I think some of these current examples of performance where lean way too much toward the athletic side, but I think a better balance can be struck. There are button-down shirts and chinos, for example, that are still primarily cotton but employ some stretch material just to make them a little more forgiving. I actually really like those

I agree that classic trousers are vastly superior and that synthetic/ill-fitting alternatives are non-starters. However, I do think that there are hybrid models out there for specifically casual wear that works. There are "leisure pants" from makers like Taylor Stitch and Rubinacci with drawstrings that can not be described as sweat pants and can work with casual dress shirts, polos, t-shirts, etc. I would never recommend these with a sport coat but a safari jacket or overshirt could work.

I actually love easy pants (not frankentrousers). I think there's a fine line between what I think of as Sports Suits and a gradual movement towards more casual clothing. Part of it is that I find the drawstring very comfortable because I like to wear my pants high and have a large belly, and part of it is that the more formal easy pants I like are the ones that have very wide, more interesting cuts and are made out of natural fabrics like linen, wool, or even a nice cotton. I think cutting them more like trousers with a cinched waist and using more trouser-like fabrics does a lot to keep some of the easy pants away from "suit in track fabric" energy lol

I think (in my particular opinion) skinny post-modern suits, pants and blazers (and everything else, really), are indeed for skinny people only (preferably dancers) with a post-modern inclination and preferences. And I wouldn't even say "fit" (a more classic cut will look better for fit or muscular people, as opposed to a skin-tight suit that looks like it is about to rip, which some people love and makes them look like pimps), it is for real skinny people, like the models that wear those in commercials...

These examples lean way too much toward the former, but you can find khakis and button-down shirts that are more or less cotton but have a bit of stretch fabric blended in, and I quite like those, myself. I had a job where I needed to wear dress pants because it was a uniformed position... but it just wasn't practical for me to have a bunch of nice wool dress pants. And, my employer wasn't going to pay for the dry cleaning and maintenance of them. I ended up getting black "suit pants" (polyester dress pants), nothing new I know, but these were specifically designed to be dress pants that you can wash, and the that look really nice, at least compared to other non-natural material dress pants. From a company called bluffworks. For my purposes I think these pants work really well. I don't have that job anymore, but I'll actually still use those pants because, in a pinch, they're actually not that bad as just black pants that I need to throw on. They're certainly not worthy of being used as wedding clothes, for example, but just as business casual they're more than ok.

I love you guys, but I’m going to have to disagree with you on this one. I own the Proper Cloth version made from a linen blend and I absolutely love them. I wear them with a nice t-shirt or linen button-up, and espadrilles, and I think it looks dope. Anyone with common sense in fashion knows these are not meant to be worn with a sport coat or as any type of business casual look. I reserve mine for weekends.

@@gentlemansgazette lounge pants IMHO are generally loose, eminently comfortable, made of linen for the summer or flannel in the winter, and (not) styled so as they can be worn with anything suitable to go out in public. I guess they're basically pyjama pants with a zipper fly and pockets. They don't pretend to be acceptable attire outside the house or maybe a pool deck, beach hut or cabin.

Yeah, the drawstring and elastic waistband ruin em for me. I mean, the wool/linen ones are cool if you are going full casual, but they were never meant for jackets. They are a stepdown from jeans, and 2 stepdowns from chinos

Polo shirts, buton down collar shirts or chukka boots are from a sports background and no one would point them as not classic. I do not see a reason to discard performance pants based in athleisure or golf practice so early. There are different cuts and a variety that elevates the formality just as the previous examples to a smart casual paired with shirts and sweaters and they are versatile enough to be toned down with t shirts or sneakers as well. Only the dressiest elements would mismatch like trying to combine them with a suit jacket as an odd jacket or silk ties, french cuffs and so on... I would say that the term "frankentrousers" is derogatory and shortsighted when assessing the potential impact and overlooking the shared role among jeans and chinos and other casual trousers. I was really skeptical before trying them, I have to say. I still have a propension for natural fibers but I have to concede that the fit and comfort is top tier. Elastic waist or cuffs or drawstrings are too casual for my style and less versatile, however

Blending athletic and dressy components in a pair of pants isn't new: manufacturers have been marketing sweatpants with dressier, more "pants-like" closures for a number of years now, as a less slobbish alternative for wearing in the gym. As far as that goes, I'd actually be interested, as I don't like the look of conventional sweats. But I'd feel no need to wear them to a job interview.

Perhaps instead of the default being "here are all the things you'll need for harsh winters" with a thrown-in "if you live somewhere warmer then here's one alternative" - the ratios should be reversed as the default is weather that only gets below freezing one month a year, if at all...

If GG wants to discuss trends, let’s discuss short length slacks where your socks show alot are a good look. I see it at work, usually younger dudes.
