Hey Winston, I lover your videos! I just have a quick question, what are those random announcements you can hear in the background? You can hear them at 11:13 and in a few other places throughout the video, and I noticed it in an ADVchina video too... it sounds like random numbers, but I'm not sure because 我的中文不好 ;) 谢谢!

I understand why he said hes from England instead of South Africa. He just avoided 20 minutes of interrogation of why hes not black, and also created a much smoother dialogue to get his answers. I spent two years in China and have had a few Chinese girlfriends. I can assure you they have a direct, almost childlike set of questions that would make any politically correct person cringe. Seeing some comments from idiots about him not saying his origins means they haven't lived in china... don't have any Chinese friends... or watched his video about the open racism in china.

Do you think it's a cultural norm in China to ask impolite questions or there's just so many poorly cultured people? I have heard some arguments that the Cultural Revolution killed the educated, well mannered intelligentsia of China, and eventually farm folk with no knowledge of etiquette moved en masse to cities, bringing their poor manners and habits with them. For example, in Vietnam most people cut the line, but others still get annoyed when that happens (which indicates that it is not okay to cut the line). Also, most people will smack their lips and slurp when eating. However, the highly educated families in Vietnam I have encountered do not do those things.

nhunka44 Generally, I believe it’s cultural. My wife from China along with friends and family never think about asking questions that to our western culture seem out of place or personal. I found it a little unnerving at first. But in the scheme of things it really isn’t a big deal😀

My wife is Chinese, and we just celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary. You are correct that the cultural differences never go away. But we have learned to enjoy those differences! The only real exception is ‘humor’. As exemplified in your video, they laugh easily, but will never understand Western (or American) humor, such as sarcasm or ‘kernel of truth’ comedy. It has been a bit stifling over the years, but it’s truly funny how comedy is simply beyond their cultural grasp. 😜 Love conquers all! (except American humor)

That's one thing that I really loved about my few weeks in China around the World Roller Games in Nanjing, the open friendliness of the ordinary person in the street, the innocent curiosity about you personally, and their willingness to hear about where you come from and what it's like, from totally random situations or for no reason at all. I felt a certain sense of safety, as everyone seemed to be just so chilled and friendly everywhere, even away from the Roller Games. My 13 year old daughter and myself went as the support squad for the Australian Roller Hockey Team and had the same event guides and security guys at the venue for the 11 days. After getting to know them in the initial few days, each time we turned up to the venue, we were offered gifts from all of them, thanking us for coming. Nothing big at all, however what they did give was personally from them and hand made the previous evening, from having taken the time to speak to them that day. My daughter had a massive following, and we have some awesome pictures of her and the staff (Unpaid Uni students forced to work at the games during the study break.) including her being surrounded by 4 huge armed to the teeth security guards that absolutely adored her, in a nice way that wasn't creepy at all, it was genuinely nice. There was a feel and a vibe that I loved with the ordinary people in the street, however, there were some glitches in the Matrix that I saw and felt after leaving Nanjing. It wasn't so nice anymore, and in Shangdi, it was 'get me the hell out of here!' The locals seemed so depressed and miserable. So much so, I could pick the Chinese tourists from the locals. I've worked with a lot of Chinese students and totally get England not SA. They would be so interested to hear all about SA, you'd never get back on point. :) They are a very naive, humble, subservient people for the most part, I believe as a result of being oppressed in one way or another for 1,000's of years under the dynasties, the concession periods and now more recently the CCP. Please correctly me if I'm wrong, they've never really been able to have a crack at being a truely free people, always under the thumb of the few.

Man, you handled that well. Nearly 2 decades in rural Japan wore me down, but midway through, I began asking a similar question for every question asked of me (the usual top 5: country, job, wife, kids, how long . . . .). The questioning would usually stop when I started inquiring about their work, where they work and what uni they went to . . . . Most people did it out of innocent curiosity, but (usually) middle-aged men had a chip on their shoulder toward foreigners, and they had to pay for information with information; they didn't like that.

  • @wlan246

No: This is what my reasoning tells me, because the origin of this preference had nothing to do with race: it was a preference for Chinese people with lighter skin, over Chinese people with darker skin. That other people from other parts of the world have lighter or darker skin was irrelevant. It is unfortunate that this cultural bias now causes them to look more favorably on a Northern European ditch-digger than on a Sub-Saharan African business executive. But it has nothing to do with their ethnic backgrounds.

As I understand it, that's how it started, back when the only people in China were Chinese. Most people with tanned skin were poor outdoor laborers, and most people with paler skin were the well-to-do who paid others to work. If you want your son/daughter to marry well, you'd give preference to the ones who looked like they were financially well off, over the ones who looked like ditch-diggers.

This makes me think about the multiple videos on youtube where they go to china (or any asian country for that matter) and ask the women what they think of western("western" being code word for white) men. The most common answer is that they thought that white men were hot. Some even going so far as saying that they thought that white men were hotter than chinese/Japanese/Korean men (depending on where the interviewers asked the question). In the comment sections of these videos, you'll always see something along the lines of "relax, weebs. They're talking about men like Brad Pitt." Seeing this video, they clearly are talking about the average white guy.

You need to know that after 100 years's humiliation from 1840 to 1949, countless Chinese people had lost their beief and prid, and from 1950 to recent years most Chinese people are still suffering from the poverty. I admit that many Chinese people are not so confident when facing white people, and some Chinese people alway degrade themselves when facing you, that's just because your western civilization and wetstern countries have been far more advanced, far more powerful and far richer than us for many decades. However the good news is that we China is becoming more and more richer and powerful, and we Chinese people are moving steadiy to our bright future. I firmly believe that my country will never be backwar and poor, and sooner or later all the Chinese people will live more confidently and more colorfully.

Shenzhen is a relatively new city that is highly influenced by western society. Perhaps this is the reason Winston's videos are a bit light on realities here in China. This is not to say that he is incorrect. He just does not take the discussion far enough.Let me give you an example of how Winston often does not go far enough in his explanations. Are Chinese girls "easy". It depends on your definition of easy. Sexually, the answer is "no". Sex is not something that is practiced before an engagement often. Even the concept of holding hands, kissing, or "touching" is a bit taboo. Another example is the idea of marriage. Winston casually mentions that women are pressured to get married at a young age. This is true. Through his telling, you might think that it is a choice. It really is not. Girls who are not married by age 26 can often become an embarrassment to the family and society will frown upon the as having something wring with them. Families begin to put lots of pressure and guilt on the girl. By the way, the same holds true for Chinese boys who should be married by age 28 at the latest. Although things are changing in China through the younger generations with more and more women wanting to have a career and forego marriage until later in life, the pressure in most families is too much for them. If a westerner is looking to just have some fun and play the dating game, they are doing a huge disservice to the Chinese girl. She will date you with every intention of marriage from the first date. If a westerner does not have this in mind and strings the girl along with false hopes, you have damaged her, taking away valuable time and energies. This does happen all too often here in China. As such, many Chinese girls are told not to date foreigners because the odd of marriage are not great. The foreigner just disappears one day and leave the poor girl with wasted time and broken expectations. One other note about Winston's videos is that he will talk about Chinese culture, but in a very basic way. When you are trying to discuss China to people, culture and traditions usually have to be mentioned. That is because culture and traditions is everything in China. Not only do you need to know it, but you must understand the "why" and "how" of the culture to truly explain and understand. Winston does brush the issue of why white skin is idolized over dark skin, but he skirts the issue with a very watered-down version. I do enjoy his videos as it reminds me of most foreigners viewpoints and thinking here in China. Winston has been in China for 10 years and is married to a Chinese woman, which gives his a sense of authority. But, I suspect that most of his time is spent in a modern city which is highly westernized and Chinese culture and traditions are not as prevalent there as they might be in a second or third tiered city. Let me finish this comment to say that I appreciate Winston's work with his videos. He is doing what I strive to do with my blog writings and that is to try to re-introduced people to a new China of the 21st century. The old stereotypes that many westerners have are pretty much dead or dying quickly. Like many nations of the world, there are very dark periods in Chinese history, but that is a China of olden times. I am sure that Winston would agree that Chinese culture and western culture is like night and day. But, the two cultures are merging fairly quickly and that merging is producing a dawn that binds the night and day together.

Thank you Oleg. My China blog is at nashboroguy3.wordpress.com. I also write for a blog at oxfordseminars.com. I hope my comment posted on Winston's site is ever misunderstood as me knocking his efforts. I thoroughly enjoy his commentary, along with his cohorts with their V-blogs. They often speak to topics that are both interesting and important to those coming to China and for those of us who live here. I am especially excited to see what their latest project will be like from their trip up north. Every one of us in China who develops a blog, writes articles, or produces KZread videos, are giving others a certain viewpoint and a set of experiences unique to that one person. Just as Winston gives a view from living in one of China's newer, 21st century, western-infused, tier one city, my view comes from more of a traditional, country-wide, conservative view focused on cultures and traditions that are ever changing. Therefore, I suggest that if a person is interested in China or coming here to work/live, take in all different perspectives.

Thanks for the reply Bill! I read bits and pieces from random parts of your blog. I can see you've really found your calling as a teacher. I'm actually at the start of that journey, I'll be going to China to teach this year. So if you could only give me one article of yours in order to prepare me to be a successful teacher, which one would it be?

Just one? Not possible. First, let me apologize to Winston for hijacking this part of his comment section of his video. Oleg, the first thing I suggest is to enjoy the honeymoon period of the Culture Shock experience. It is the most remarkable time of your travels. The second thing I would suggest is to make your lessons your own and develop them to suit the needs of your students and for yourself. Most schools do not have high expectations. Many teachers are discouraged by this. I see it as a blessing. If you only teach from the textbooks and do the minimum amount expected by the administration, the level of satisfaction and sense of accomplishment quickly disappears. If you take your teaching profession seriously and try to go above and beyond, you will know that you have made a difference. Two examples from my experience. I was tired of doing the performing monkey act in classes without feeling that my students were learning anything. I quickly changed my lesson plans and developed a speaking program that enhanced the students abilities. This program took me over a year to develop and most of the information was garnered through lots of research online. The second example was when I was assigned a textbook that focused on reading and writing skills. When I discovered that most students had no idea what the four sentence structures were in the English language ((simple, compound, complex and compound-complex), I began developing my own writing program. My students had no idea how to write a simple paragraph. And, as my students were preparing themselves to study in America, writing essays was a very important skill for them. I spent nearly two terms developing this writing program, teaching them basic sentence structure to writing a five paragraph essay. Going into my third year with this program, my school has seen the value of this program and it is now an expectation. Basically, the biggest advice I can provide to you is to make your lessons meaningful and advantageous to the students. I seldom play games or show videos, just for the sake of wasting time. My games and videos are often important to the student's learning. I have spent hours and hour reformatting PPT games and researching things to use in the classroom. I have studied the concepts of group study, project based learning, and other teaching techniques. Here is the key to the process. You as a teacher must realize that all of your efforts may fall on many deaf ears. That is par for the course. Sometimes you will only reach a small percentage of students. That is ok. Just try to bring the students along for the ride. Finally, in China, I make two big statements to my students at the beginning of the year and reinforce it throughout the year. 1) As a teacher, all teachers can only introduce and explain skills for the students to learn. It is up to the students to become their own teachers and learn how and why these skills work. They must study these skills and put them into practice. Sitting in a class for 40-60 minutes does not automatically mean they have learned what is taught. 2). In china, teachers teach to the exam. But, to truly understand the material and to be able to use it in their lives forever, they must learn to ask deeper and more involved questions. Chinese teachers teach the "who, what, when, where" information. That is all they need to learn to pass a bubble sheet exam. Westerners not only have to learn this, but we also must be able to ask "why and how". This gives us an advantage in our careers and lives. We learn to ask why it is important to know such things and how does this information make us better employees and human beings. In closing, I will just say to you that you must decide what kind of teacher you want to be. Think of all the extra hours our western counterparts put in to prepare their lesson plans and in grading papers. You have a choice. You can be the dancing white money spewing just what the textbook offers and become like so many other ESL teachers around the globe. Or, you can develop yourself into being the best damn teacher that your students and school has ever known. Basically, you can take the easy route or a path that is less traveled and more difficult. Many of my critics will say that all of my efforts are for naught. I totally disagree with that assessment and I have five years of experiences and result to show that they are wrong.

cosmichero 2025 It's not, it's just a cultural preference. It used to be the same in western cultures. The lighter your skin was the more likely you spent your life in the shade, so it was a signifier of wealth. However in modern society everyone schmuck has an office job, it doesn't signify shit. A tan could signify someone has enough wealth to take a bunch of beach vacations or something. It's all about sexual preference, and that usually has to do with health and wealth signifiers. The Emma Stone getting flak for endorsing whitening cream is just funny. Feminist tend to think anything promoting white people is evil, and she makes a big deal out of her feminism. They make a huge deal out of everything, try to make everything about being sexist or racist. If you like asian women you have a fetish, if you aren't attracted to fat women you're fat phobic. It's a rather silly.

But I do feel embarrassed in some parts of the video, but mainly because the Chinese people in the video are racist... But I don't think it's anybody's fault. Unlike US or Europe, China is not a multi-racial country, so there is no education or common agreement on how to treat people from other ethnic group, and do not make some comments on black/white people that would disturb them. But I guess this will improve as more and more foreigners visit or even live in China.

Adam Hagmann I work in a non invasive Nuclear Cardiology lab, and all the white guys in our lab who date Asian girls, well I have heard them speak candidly about why they prefer Asian pussy! I'm sure I don't have to go into full details but many white males express that Asian Pussy is tight and reminds them of a little young girl! That I find to be very SICK!!! I've also encountered white men from all over the world who has express this same sick fantasy about Asian women! In my non pro job, I am able to travel a lot and meet tons of people from all the world from white, Asian , black, Arab and Native American women and every woman who refuse to date white men anymore all claim that either the white guys dick was very small or the men were mentally & sexually abusive! My last boss told me that her white husband was such a sick son of a bitch that she had to divorce him. She says that she even had to turn the internet off completely because she couldn't keep him off the internet searching for Asian midget porn! He later dated an Asian girl that looked younger than his daughter from his first marriage! Again, there is something about white men lusting for Asian women that look like little kids. Also, I'm shocked at how many white men on my FB are dating or married to Asian women for sex but treat the women like trash! So you see Adam, I am not basing my claims on one or two encounters with the females that I spoke with, I am basing them on everyone that I spoke with. Again....my non pro non allows me to travel and meet diff people from diff backgrounds from all over the world. Also what I found interested is that most women who dated British men, claimed that they were the absolute worse in bed! They said that they fell in love with the British accent and their characters but the sex was god awful! I am a white straight male so I cannot tell you that most white men dicks are tiny as a wet mouse but I can tell you that most of the women I've interviewed or photographed have all expressed how small white mean are! I refuse to believe that all of the women I've spoken with would lie to me when in fact, they don't even know each other! So instead of getting your asshole-wet over my comment, perhaps you should be calling out the guy who made the video and stop acting like an asshurt emotional heart broken chick with a dick! Lol😂
