I love big bore 2 strokes. I've owned roughly 13 over the last 25 years. However, I really dislike the fanaticism and insanity around them from COVID forward. The Facebook groups are getting toxic, and it's now all about being a daddy's money clout chaser. Rule 1: Never buy from a fellow enthusiast. Of course guys who obsess all day long online in their echo chambers will convince themselves it's absolutely worth $15k+... They are awesome, and always will be. But just like any hobby, watch out for the grifters. Do your research, be patient, don't do emotional buys. It's not about clout chasing. It's about enjoying one of the most amazing bikes made!

Maico of Germany still make big bore 2-strokes. A 320,500,620 and a 700! They're not the cheapest but they're very high quality! Also BRC of Canada make 500cc. kits for a lot of 250 & 300cc. brands. They have a nice kit for KTM's from 2007 to 2019 at least and I think also the tpi bikes! Pee on the Electric bikes get a real man's bike like a big bore 2-stroke!

Worked at a Kawasaki dealer back in the day that mainly dealt in dirt bikes.... in the 4 years I worked there we sold 3 KX500s.... 1 of which came back right away because the guy came to the realization he could not handle it. The other 2 were purchased by some dude out in Hawaii who went by the name of KX Mike...

Hey mate, love your Chanel. Video like is got me back into bikes. Grew up on bikes but sadly life made me sell my last bike. I know it's no 2 strock 500 but I was lucky to get my hands on a 2010 yz450f. She was up for 1600 non running. Had electrical drams they said. I toke the risk to find it was spark plug cap wasn't on the coil lead properly. After getting her running with rads and tank and seat on bike I went for quick squirt around yard haha obviously. She's had a full wash up clean up and some good rides out on trails of Australia. Just want to say thank u from here down under and just giving me the go ahead to take a risk and build a something someone had no idea on. Thanks marty from Australia

Oiling gaskets causes them to swell. Inherently giving them rebound, allowing the to remain sealed when engine goes from cold to hot then back to cold. Counteracting refraction of the metals.

Forged piston has to have more piston to cylinder clearance which can have a little more skirt rattle as they expand different than cast. As an engine builder in the performance realm for thirty plus years I always prefer to run stock cast pistons when possible especially in vintage bikes

I bought an '86 CR500 back in 1994 from a Honda dealer for $800, the bike was original, so i made it all red and white like the later 500s, I CNC machined the bore, cutting all of the correct piston undercuts to prevent ring grab, I installed a Wiseco forged piston .02 over, reshaped the dome, added some heavy duty clutch plates and springs, since the power that it made, it went through clutches probably twice a year, (I did a lot of riding), and found the trick to starting all 500s, for everyone ready to give up on starting these machines , dont!, just slightly lay it down on the gas valve side until gas comes out of the carb overflow, guarantee, if the bikes well tuned, two to three quick kicks and it's running, sometimes it'll backfire instead of starting, so just rinse and repeat, there was no other bike that ever beat me in a race, a built Suzuki Quadzilla 500 was the closest, and i still had him by 50ft., the only problem I had were the drum brakes, I'm not a huge fan of them, and with all of that power, I was constantly locking them up just to stop, fortunately, the 86' was the last year for them, so it sat for 15 years, since life gets in the way of things, and sold it to a friend for $4,000, yeah i do regret it, i called him the day after he bought it, and had just returned from a 2 hour ride, only changing the gas, it still had the same spark plug, from my last ride!, but fyi. ( always use a resister type plug ), that says a lot for these bikes, they are monsters and not for beginners,

Really love the old two strokes, I really had a good time with them in the first years of my motocross hobby, raced a few 125's and 250's in those days. I worked in a motocross shop in those days and had the chance to ride a few 500's as well, insane power, especially some tuned engines. But these days I prefer to ride fourstrokes, had a couple of 350's, a 450 and at the moment a 250f, they're so easy to ride. Love the electric start and the great chassis / suspension these days. I'm considering to try KTM's new fuel injected 300SX, has a bit of both worlds, still a two stroke but with all the modern comfort. In the end it doesn't matter what you ride, even if it is electric, as long as you have fun at the track riding a dirtbike, it's a lifetime addiction.

But I did accidentally jump it about 80 ft and landed in a fire pit. That was no were near the small jump I hit lol. Had a 89 and a built 90 after that. Very visceral bikes. Like the muscle car of dirtbikes.

@@dormantmenace My 87 500 was my first big bike at about that same age! I had to lean it against the house just to start it haha! We used them as farm bikes because they could lug better than a 250 when gathering cattle from the pasture. I was never daring enough to really jump them though. I was more into hill climbing and trail riding. I sure do miss that power band!

Luckily enough I have 1 already. My pops bought an 88 cr500 in 92 so it was passed on to me. Would love to grab an AF, or build one one day. I See them on Facebook hobbled together asking 5 grand😂. 89 frame, 94 sub frame, 90 motor, all different color plastics, it’s sick. Parts are getting hard to find now for the 88, but the 89 and up some parts are still plentiful. Funny thing is they de-tuned the engine in 92 so that 91 you got there is the best bike to me 😂. It would be nice to see more companies making parts for these bikes to keep them going. Especially the harder to get parts for certain years. One of the coolest things for me is when my kids friends come over with newer 450’s and still drool over the 500. They’re an awesome bike and I’m glad to own 1. Hopefully I can grab up a 91 in the future but not at the current pricing.

Intill someone starts manufacturing affordable cr500 cases. Doubtfull! As every single one I've ever opened has cracks (hairline fractures) all over the primary side case. Probably a result of the big a$$ Kickstart combined with analog ignition. People just jumping on them with all they got. Last one I sold like 4 years ago, Same story. Cases finally let go. Had them welded .. cracked before it was heat cycled. 1500 a side for billets cases was all I could find, other than previously repaired n welded cases.

Yeah, big bore is definitely making a come back, but what's even better is that there are companies bringing them into the modern era tech wise. Take Panthera for instance they have taken a CR 500 and made cases that offer electric start for your 2T monster and they also have a 600cc big bore kit that is fuel injected. If you like to play with monstrous two stroke power it is going to be hard not to appreciate an extra 100cc and forr us older gents whose knees aren't what they used to be an electric start come on now. The weakest link is the frames anymore but with so many companies offering kits to retro fit a smoker powerplant into an aluminum 450 chassis the only thing standing in anyone's way is the funds to put it all together. It is not unrealistic to have close to 12k or more invested in building a modernized 500cc smoker. I rode a Service Honda 500 AF bike back in 2009 that the guy had over 17k in the build. It was by far the sickest CR 500 I have ever ridden and I have owned several big bore 2T bikes. CR 480, CR 500, Yz 490, 2 KX 500s, a KTM 520, and several different 250s. Still nothing I owned was a flickable, arm ripping powerful, or as fast as that Service Honda. When it hit its powerband it felt like you were trying to do a superman grab on the ground. It wanted to throw you off the back fender. I over shot triples that I was barely making in 3rd gear pinned on my KX with a 270 big bore kit in 2nd gear pinned on that CR. It was insanely fast. I got out of 2nd on the track twice and it was on a long straight and only because I short shifted it to give my wrists and arms a break from trying to hang onto it. By far the greatest rush I have ever had in the dirt. Good luck with your bike and be safe.

Alot of why the two strokes last longer is all down to maintinence. Many 4 stroke guys dont change oil often as they should. Therefore shortening the life. 2 strokes get fresh oiling just by mixing oil correctly. Trana oil needs changing yes but it does last longer than oil does on my trx 450r . Im syre is same with many bike quads

It's a fad. All it really takes is KTM or gas gas or really any other MX bike manufacturer to come out with a new modern 500cc 2 stroke and boom... The old CR500 you just paid $10000 for is now back to reality worth $3500 which is what they were going for before everyone got stimulus checks. New 450s are $10K you don't think they could make a brand new 2 stroke 500 and release it for $10k and make a killer profit? I give it 2 years.
