I know this history. I am Indian. And Indians claim that Arabs copied hindu numerals and contributed nothing. That's not true. Khwarizmis contribution to mathematics is immense. He acknowledged the need for 0 (that he saw in Indian mathematics (Brahmagupta and Aryabhatta) and how it makes calculations easier. And developed algebra (and he is Persian not Arab). So is the contribution of fibonacci. However, your video with a touch of comedy is extremely interesting. I loved it. My guess is that there was always a concept of shoonya in ancient Hindu scriptures. That gave rise to a notation for 0. Several people and civilizations have contributed to the mathematics of today. We must not discredit anyone. Just like Khwarizmi did. He credited the Indians whom he learned from. And Fibonacci gave due credit to Khwarizmi.

@@Buzz727 exactly. People of today think borrowing an idea is copy paste in word document. That too a 1000 years back, I wonder how he translated the texts in sanskrit. I searched the web to get the exact history, I couldn't find any. The mathematics of today is due to him. He is the beginning. His understanding of the use of 0

He is perceived as Arab because he developed Algorithms, Hindu numeral, Algebra and all his other works in Arabic. This happened because Baghdad was the capital of the Islamic Caliphate and every scholar was learning Arabic especially the Persians. If we call Levantines and Egyptians as Arabs today because they speak Arabic then its not completely wrong to say he was Arab because the term Arab is no longer based on ethnicity but language.

We definitely need to keep Arabic numerals, as I discovered. When I was at school in math's class I had a bright idea; "what would it be like to do algebra in Roman numerals?" The answer; 'Very Confusing'! Confusing:- I, v, L, C, D, M with x, y, z, a, b, c, etc. My teacher was not amused by my experiment and it was emphasized that; Al-gebra requires the use of Arabic numerals.

Chinese numerals are likewise in base 10, but generally they don't use place value. 一二三四五七八九 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 十百千万... 10,100,1000,10000 Another cool fact about Chinese numerals is that they have bank note versions. Just like how we write out numbers on checks, they have more complicated character versions for numbers which are harder to edit. They're 壹,贰,參,肆,伍,陸,柒,捌,玖 ... 拾,佰,仟,萬...

Pope Sylvester II is the one who gave the name Arabic numerals to the Maghrebi numerals, while the Arabs of the Middle East never cared about them or recognized them, as they were not willing to learn anything from North Africa due the problem of the centrality of the Middle East in Arab-Islamic culture. It is even more ironic that Middle Easterners only learned about these numbers with Western colonialism, so we may hear some of them calling them _English numerals_ !!

The current "English" numbering system was made by an Arab. The numbers were not adopted by Arabs because as Arabs had already adopted the Indian numerical system that is currently considered Arabic. The Indian numbers were hard to replace since their adoption especially since those numbers were also being used to number verses in the Quran. The Arabic numbers were first adopted in Spain and spread in Europe afterwards. and Arabs kept using the Indian numbers. FYI: I refer to him as Arab because all his work and writings were in Arabic not Persian language. That is why they are called Arabic numerals. not because he was an Arab but because he used Arabic as his language of communication

The concept of one symbol for one number is indian, but the shapes were mostly designed by Al-Khawarizmi. Indians were not the only ones to invent the zero as it was invented independently in different parts of the world, the oldest recorded one being in Mesopotamia by Sumerians around 5000 years ago in the shape of two slanted wedges. Moreover, except for the 0 2 3 and maybe 9, the numbers designed by Al-Khawarizmi do not resemble the indian ones at all, since his design was based on the number of angles in the shape of each numeral. Finally, Fibonacci popularised those numbers in Europe in 1202 through his Book of Calculation (Liber Abaci) after returning from North Africa where he studied mathematics in the university of Béjaia.

So i did some research The numbers made out of angles count is an Arabic thing but made by someone else ( not the Alkhawarizmi ) Later changed with time to 123.. And the ١٢٣.. are indian numbers converted to fit the Arabic writing ( same idea but different drawing ) And i guess the original indian numbers also got changed with time to 123. Too. ( The original indian numbers and the angles count numbers are different but both of them look like 123... )

In the video 7 eats 9. In Turkish, 7 is "Yedi" which also means "ate", in a similar fashion to 8 in English which is basically pronounced as "ate".

The words algebra and algorithm, are Arabic words. The Muslims educated the world with their research and education in Spain from 711 -1492 we'd still be using roman numbers! You try doing long division with those!
