It's nice to see a post on 45s-and you are correct-they don't get anywhere near the attention and respect they deserve. There are many cases of 45s containing different mixes and versions of hit songs that you will not find on an artist/band's LP/CD release, or even streaming. I grew up as a kid in the 60s, teenager in the 70s, and like most kids of that time, listened top Top 40 radio. The 45 rpm single was my introduction to the sounds and hits of the time. As a cash strapped kid, it was much easier to come up with a buck or two and head to the local store to pick up my favorite single(s). Plus, I could buy the hit single and maybe pick up something else by another artist. LPs were expensive to most kids, and I often got them as gifts for birthday/graduation/Christmas. The 45rpm has a vast, rich history that has yet to be fully discussed in the VC. There are quite a few 45s that have significant value, and many have fantastic sound. When you add in the cool picture sleeve or often colorful label company sleeve, you have a very cool artistic package. I have been collecting them since the late 60s, and have thousands, nearly all in original sleeves and in EX/NM condition. These "plastic gems" are an excellent way to discover many different artists/genres. While there are those of us who still love and collect 45s, people today do not collect them as much as LPs for numerous reasons-IMO- the main one being probably because they don't want to have to change/flip the record after each song-society has gotten lazy.

I grew up listening to 45s as a child but I don’t listen to or buy them nowadays They were great to play a stack of your favorite songs on the old turntable but as I moved into the album I quit buying them I know people who love collecting them though!

I agree that in the main they sound very good. One in particular is the Genesis single Abacab which just sounds incredibly punchy and powerful. I have a collection of about 200 and it’s for sentimental reasons because it was a very prominent format when I was growing up in the 70s.

Matthew - love your channel! Also it is great that you have ramped up so quickly. Singles make up a very small % of my overall collection - maybe 100 7 inch 45s, with a smaller number (but growing) of 12 inch singles (which are often 33 1/3, but the best sounding are 45 rpm) totaling 50 or so 12 inch singles (mostly 1980s). I have a Al Green boxset of 7 inch 45s that sound awesome. Then a mish mash of oddball 45s from 1960s and 1970s (Led Zeppelin from Japan and ? Mark and the Mysterians). My favorite 12 inch singles are XTC “Love on a Farmboys Wages” and REM’s “Don’t Go Back to Rockville”
