    Super pumped to hear how it performs on the snow mounted in the Catalyst chassis. This is awesome for Arctic Cat and the industry as a whole. Loosing Yamaha sucks but, if nothing else, it looks like Cat is getting serious about their offerings once again…. Green vs. Yellow vs. Red will have a rivalry like it did in the ‘90’s and early ‘00’s!!!! Great to see!

    Arctic Cat will be the next 1 to leave the Market. They just don't have the sales or dealer network to survive. Way more $$$ for them in ATV and UTV Markets. SLEDS are dying a slow death and will settle with DOO and POLARIS as the only 2 left . I know the Cat guys will Cry--But all you have to do is look at the industry sales year by year and you can see where Cat will see there is not enough $$$ left for them to keep building sleds.

    Two things, first off, I watched the release video at Hay Days and your explanation of the engine was much more interesting and in depth, so thanks for that. Second, I’ve always been a believer that for trail sleds an Arctic Cat 600 is the way to go, they have always have had a great balance of power and light weight. So the fact they made the 858 version lighter than the 600 version (still can’t wrap my head around that yet) tells me that this WILL be the best snowmobile available.

    Cat has always had over engineered beefy cranks and crank cases in their 2 strokes especially the big bores... that's why they have always been the favorite for aftermarket big bore kits from D&D, Speedworx etc for big performance and reliability. I hope that Cat with this new crank has not gone down the road that Polaris and BRP have for so many years of weak cranks, bearing and crank cases that leave their faithful wrenching when they should be riding.

Now plumb each v-forece reed crankcase to the inlet ports and the exhaust ports has the other pistons ans amount a sliding power valve moved by the same 2 way servo! tis would make a 1716 laydown OP 2 stroke and turbo for the catylist!

  • @jnmason6283

    @jnmason6283

    9 ай бұрын

    @@malcolmwhite3567 The main disadvantage of forced induction on a gasoline 2-stroke is blowing out the fresh fuel/air charge out the exhaust ports. Ski-Doo overcame this by using direct fuel injection with high pressure injectors squirting fuel only when all ports are closed. They also have booster injectors behind the throttle bodies. Polaris uses transfer port injectors and flow patterns that minimize the charge losses but doesn't eliminate it. Arctic Cat's design is in between, with the injectors on the cylinder wall. Modern fuel injected and pinpoint oil injected 2-strokes are much better candidates for boost, but Ski-Doo's direct injection is the cleanest (and more complex) design.

    It's less over square if it has a longer stroke .. Two strokes only make power while the rings are above the port windows.. The only difference between the Famous Yamaha RD-350 and RD-400 Motorcycles is that the RD-400 had a longer stroke. You also said they increased a longer bore after saying the bore was the same.. I think you meant the bore is the same and the stroke is longer.. which would make the engine less over square.

    I sincerely hope it is reliable and responsive. Having the most hp is less important. I do expect it to be the "most powerful" NA 850 in peak hp simply because it's the newest. I really hope the 850 Alpha is competitive in weight with Polaris - single rail and the new chassis makes it very possible. Taking the lightweight crown, even by a hair, would be the best thing Cat could ever do for sales, and if they fall short of that after a new engine and all-new chassis, it's a huge missed opportunity and nothing short of a failure. Still could be a great sled though, I'll be eager to test ride one even if it's not the lightest, but the key to sales in the mountain segment is weight.

    I don’t think they rush anything out anymore. They need money so it needs to be right. I’ve heard rumors about a new big bore for about 4 years now. Same for a new chassis. COVID shutdowns screwed up American manufacturing so who knows how long this has been in the pipeline? Also I’m seeing perhaps Textron and Old Arctic are finally getting their ducks in a row and moving forward. The sled market is so much smaller now than just 8 years ago. It’s practically dead here in PA. The kids I teach mock sleds as a rich man’s toy only good for two months a year. They are into dirt bikes. We’ve lost three area dealers in ten years. The entire market has moved to mountain riding. Nobody makes a good sled for six grand anymore. We don’t get snow in Coudersport and the central Appalachians like we used to. Even the vintage restoration boom has faded away. It’s very disappointing. When Yamaha merged their operations with Cat I figured it was either a temporary fix or a way to fade out slowly. Because this has happened before. Just most folks these days don’t remember the other great brands that merged or got bought then faded away.

    I'm a former Arctic Cat guy. But what I noticed is that ever since they moved on from the M-series chassis, their sleds have gotten a LOT heavier. Last I checked they're at least 50 lbs heavier than anything from Polaris. Then there's the issue where you have to snow-check a sled if you want one; no in-season sales. Can't say I'm a fan of that. Frankly, I was expecting them to announce (like Yamaha) that they were going to stop making snowmobiles in the near future. Now don't get me wrong... I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

    This engine uses the same Bore but a longer stroke than the 800. Would that not mean they could reuse the pistons (assuming the compression ratio is the same) from the 800 ctec in the 858? Also, I am a little nervous about the servo actuation of the exhaust valves. Would that not be a possible fail point? Compared to something like Ves or Rave valves which are more "mechanical."

    Probably the old F1000 twin from a long time ago. That sled was fussy and even though it’s been gone for fifteen years plus it’s bad rep follows along. Now how much was truth and how much was people messing with the engine for more speed is debatable. People tend to tinker more with the hot sleds than the trail putt putts. That’s why you’ll see Fan cooled Jags from thirty years ago still powering the kids around just fine and the hot sleds all torn apart in the garage. It’s the nature of people and it’s been that way since the first hot two stroke was put in a Cat.

    it's crazy to me that not a single one of the flagship manufactures are addressing reliability or innovating an improvement in 2 stoke reliability. Look how many people in the comments and on forums are asking for more reliability. who does their market research? do they not understand that most people will take an extra 15-20 pounds for increased reliability. none of the manufactures are really doing anything about it. They all have issues.
