Archicad Tutorial #86: Archicad 26 Review

Here's my video review of Archicad 26. Even if you disagree with what I see as valuable, hopefully the video will teach you ways to take advantage of the new features in Archicad 26. Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts on Archicad 26.
If you think the video was too positive about the latest version of Archicad, that's okay. I'm mostly interested in where we can find value in the updates to Archicad. That said, here's a link to the original blog post this video is from where I wrote more about some frustrations with Archicad 26 (that didn't make it into the video): www.shoegnome.com/2022/09/08/a...

Congrats, mate. You deserve my greatest respect. You managed to stretch the unnoticeable and insignificant Archicad 26 improvements into a 17 min video. That is something! If I was to do this video you’d have 17 min of the purest angriness.

Did you check out the improvements on the Level Dimension tool? Now you are able to dimension different levels of the Slab (e.g. the bottom level). Small thing, but might be useful. 😅

I haven't explored the improvements, mostly because I rarely use the Level Dimension tool. But I need to revisit it because the new options make it much more useful to my work. (Showing ceiling heights for example). Thank you for the reminder.

Thank you very much for the video! Great overview! I totally agree with you. Your last point with the cabinets is just unbelievable...it's simply wrong. What I also don't understand why graphisoft is not fixing the very very old problems with windows and doors. There are so many things wrong or incomplete. Parts are shown in the floorplan but are missing in the section. Windows and doors within the renovation filter is a separate topic... In some points you simply can't trust the program I've the feeling. I really hope they start to fix these issues instead of packing more and more half finished plugins and add-ons (mep) into the program. The "beast" gets bigger and bigger... And I'm sorry for your daughter (arthritis) if I understood that correctly. I know how she's feeling! Cheers

I'll give my daughter your sympathies! Every user I talk to says a similar thing: just give me a version where Graphisoft cleans up the issues that already exist. No new features, just make 100 or 1,000 little fixes. That would be hailed as the best version ever!

People forget to mention that although this new search function is great, and is a huge help in some regards, the previous ArchiCADs also had some search functions. For example if you set the attribute of a selected item and you started typing in the name, then it would jump to that in the list, or if you typed in something that appears in the name of the layer/composite/etc. you had in mind it would highlight those that matched the criteria.

The old search features, I think were just a macOS thing and not available for PC users of Archicad. They were great though. After using Archicad 26 for a few months, I'm really enjoying the new search feature and don't miss the old solution.

We also need shelves (covered by doors) as dashed lines in sections and interior elevations. This is an existing function at Cadimage cabinets, and is the main reason we are not adopting the GS cabinets. We do lot of adaptable/mobility kitchens, and have to show them. 2D-ing them would take a long time, because of many different kitchen types in a project. Too bad, because the 3rd party tool is pricey (subscription based, per seat = yuck!) and would love to move on. The issues you mentioned at the end of video seem like real problems also.

I’ve been using Archicad for about 6 months. Previously Autocad and Inventor for about a decade. I must say, I’m currently a little underwhelmed and frustrated at the simple things that can’t be done. Part of my frustration is probably being new to the software and unlearning old methods, but sometimes Archicad seems to make simple things complicated. A couple of items off the top of my head which frustrate me are: Diameter dimension option (where the diameter symbol is inserted automatically), 2D polygon tool with inscribed and circumscribed option, A view cube in the 3D view, to quickly select sides or reset to home view. Increased functionality of graphic overrides (dimensions and text etc), Being able to organise project info categories. (some of these may just be operator error, but should not be complicated) Anything out of the box to help with timber framing and material cutting lists etc. Surely Graphisoft just need to look at why there is such a market for Add-ons. Why are they commonly used by people? Should some of the features just be standard in Archicad? The 26 update seems fairly weak imho. Breaking things, to show you fixed something next update! Perhaps with a bit more experience I will see things differently, but for now it seems clunky and unnecessarily complicated. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The magic wand settings allow you to make any equally sided polygon. helpcenter.graphisoft.com/user-guide/88468/ Not as quick or simple as a tool where you type the number of sides, but with how infrequently it's needed, it's a good solution. Your frustrations are definitely a mixture of new user (not knowing the hidden magic wand solution), wanting Archicad to function like other tools (3D view cube), and Archicad's weaknesses (diameter dimension issue, Project Info organization limitations, etc.). And I'd also add to that: comfort with the tool. For instance new users often struggle with clicking on things in Archicad. There's a lot of complexity in what and how you can click on an element. It becomes second nature, but at first it can be extremely frustrating. The best advice I can give you is be patient. Don't expect Archicad to act like another program. But do expect it to have similar functionality. For instance 3D projection settings (right click in 3D to get to it) will give you the view cube features you're looking for. But after using Archicad and embracing its workflows, you'll discover you don't need the view cube to get what you want done. The biggest struggle people have with Archicad is demanding it act like another program.

@@Shoegnome Cheers! I’m sure if I persevere a good chunk of my frustration will disappear. The magic wand polygon function is a great tip, cheers. The fact that it is almost a hidden function is exactly why Archicad can be frustrating. Where I currently work Archicad is used largely in a 2D capacity (which I find crazy), but it’s hard to put forward the case for 3D when sometimes things that I assumed would be achievable with ease become unnecessarily complicated, or require a degree in GDL. Fingers crossed the more experience I have the easier it will be. I’m looking forward to getting used to more functionality. 🤓

@@theseldomseenguy My favorite saying regarding Archicad is the program is "easy but not obvious". So often users reach out to me and the answer is simple, just not simple to find. Using Archicad as a mainly 2D program sounds awful. The benefits of Archicad (or any BIM program) compound as complexity increases. BTW, a typical user/firm doesn't need to do anything with GDL. For all its faults and warts, Archicad long ago matured to a point where all typical architectural elements are easy to model with the native tools. It's only when you get into NURBS and wild curves that things breakdown. If your bosses and coworkers are saying Archicad can't handle the 3D they want to do so they are sticking with 2D, they are incorrect. Check out this video for an example of complex modeling using a simple tool: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5-quMWPqsrKg9o.html

@@Shoegnome That is a fairly apt saying. It would be nice if it were a little more obvious sometimes. As I touched on before improved functionality for timber framing would be good, particularly heavy timber framing. NURBS and complex curves shouldn’t generally be a thing. I think it is more a case of 3D taking more time than 2D, which for me is slightly shortsighted when you get so much more from the end product. I can’t put forward my case though, until I’m capable and can back it up I guess. I looked a challenge though! Cheers for the link and the help! 👍

so we've been in 25 for almost a month now, from being on 22 for years & i have to say i have been utterly disappointed at it's stability. we've been encountering many bugs with the change. we've migrated all our projects from 22 to 25 & the bugs we've been having are: - associative rails linking to roofs (being used as barge/ridge capping profiles) have mirrored. fortunately it's mostly an easy fix - labels associated to roofs have moved meters below where they used to be in 22. - dimensions to grids have visually disappeared in Sections/Elevations. we've had to do multiple workarounds to re-enable them. essentially, we've had to re-dimension them for EVERY.SINGLE. ELEVATION. AND. SECTION. - THE WORST of all these bugs have been the rotated Elevations, Sections & Interior Elevation views. i know this bug occasionally hit me at least once or twice a year in earlier versions, but it seems not a week goes by where at least 1-3 projects experience this bug. we've previously bitten the bullet by doing an Open/Repair operation, but this doesn't seem to fix it completely. it might fix one or two glitchy elevs/sects, but then open another view & it happens there where it wasn't before. there was one project where we had to do FOUR Open/Repair operations. this is compounded by the fact that we mostly work with teamwork files in the office. so having to save off a solo PLN, do an Open/Repair, check that all Elevs/Sects/Interior views are OK, re-upload, check again that all views are OK after the Teamwork share & pray to all deities that it doesn't happen again. it's utterly frustrating & time wasting. we don't really know what else to do. except maybe just weather this bug-storm for the updated v22-v25 files & hope that none of this happens with the fresh v25 projects. i'm just having anxiety from opening up any Section/Elevation or Internal view for fear of this bug happening.

That sucks. I found 25 fairly stable. No more or less than other recent versions. I've had zero issues yet with 26. A good friend, Patrick from 4dproof, had countless nightmare experiences with 25 and agrees that 26 is much more stable. So maybe 22->26 will be better. That said, it might just be a symptom of the big jump. I'm fairly confident that once you're on new 25 or 26 files you won't have these issues.

Its improving but the cabinet legs and handles - that’s a gaffe and a half. Less clicks. Do you happen to know if there was ever a “select similar” selection tool where you could, for instance, select a chair then simply “select similar” to find all the chairs like that one? Even if we only had it for objects and lights - that would be revolutionary for me. I really don’t like “find & select” its super clumsy. The furniture objects are still bad and ugly. Why can’t they get some fresh ones in there. I know I can go to Bimobject and pick up some “real” objects but for schematic design where I just need some placeholders - do I really need to settle for 10-15 year old objects - yuk. Has anyone at GS been furniture shopping lately even if it is just to Ikea? Also it would be good to have a module to review and prep your model for 3D printing. I dont want to hire an expert - I would rather just do it myself. For the guy who is finding the jump from 22 to 25 buggy - that's a big jump - how old is the computer you are running it on? What I keep telling myself is to remember the 40hrs of Revit training I had - that settles me down on being too hard on AC.

I’m going to share all these comments with the Archicad Wish Bot on twitter. They are all great. Select similar would be really nice. Basically a selection option that’s similar to parameter transfer. The answer is there in Archicad though, buried in Find & Select. I’ll try to do a video on that soon. Find & Select can be cumbersome to use, but if you set up a few pre-defined Criteria Sets, it will do exactly what you are looking to do. Completely agree with you about the furniture. Better furniture would be SO helpful. I’ve been downloading a lot of Sketchup and Revit objects for appliances recently. I’ll import them, turn them into morphs, clean them up, resave them as objects, then clean up the 2D symbol. It goes fast and is worth doing when the visuals in 3D are really important (plus it’s usually only 1-4 Objects/project). But I haven’t done that much with furniture. On my to do list though is script a better kitchen stool with GDL. I hate the kitchen stool options. A plugin for 3D printing prep would be fantastic. There must be some easy solution using Grasshopper/Rhino. But who has the time?! People ask me a lot how to 3D print a model, it’s never a simple answer. I love your final comment. Archicad isn’t perfect, but just think of the alternative!

Graphisoft needs to stop doing half baked improvements like the cabinetry. It is not worth the time or effort at the moment. I'll stick with my old objects that let me push and pull door fronts to any size a design at the same time. The cabinetry objects reminds me of why Revit is so shit to design in. You're forever looking for dropdown menu tick boxes on and off.... Forget it...just model it and design in the 3D window and enjoy creating ideas. Other than that I'm not bothering with v26 yet. I dunno if I'll bother with my annual subscription if they keep up this lack of updates and half half baked ideas.

I'm not here to change your mind, but beyond a few annoyances, the improved cabinets are good. It really helps to start with favorites. They need to fix the knob and foot issue. And yes AC24-26 don't have enough major improvements. But having used 26 for awhile now, it's way more stable than 25 and the folders + search feature (while not everything I want) make 26 superior to 25.
