ARCHETYPES are Pathfinder 2e's BEST Feature

Ойындар

The archetype system is probably my favorite aspect of Pathfinder 2e, allowing any character to pursue hundreds of different possibilities for growth as they level up. The Free Archetype variant lets your players build the versatile character of their dreams without sacrificing some VERY important class feats!

First PF2e character I ran was a Goblin Rogue who worshipped Calistria. He ended up becoming smitten with the Champion, and that combined with fulfilling a quest for revenge against his torturer led to taking the Cleric Multiclass. He changed from Calistria to Cayden, turning over a new leaf.

I made a Resentment Witch ratfolk with a cat famliar, last session we leveled to 2 and I had the brilliant idea of getting the Beastmaster archetype (free archetype of course). I am now a Rat witch with a cat familiar and a pet dog. And they all go into the battlefield with me.

I introduced them to Bonus Archetype before they hit level 2, and seeing how well they handled it when they leveled up just goes to show how good this rule (and the Archetype system at all) is in the first place!

Someone (I want to say KingOogatron?) mentioned that if there were a 2.5/3E in about five years, putting or allowing a Profession archetype feat implanted inside backgrounds would kickstart archetype exposure and increase the value of backgrounds and that’s been on my mind since. And then also reducing the number of archetypes but spicing up and mashing existing ones. But yeah archetypes in pathfinder are absolutely fire and one of my favorite features in the whole game. Change brain chemistry for how to design advancement and multiclassing.

I've come across this argument a couple of times and it's usually in combination with a couple of features that don't mesh well with the free archetype ruling. The ancient elf heritage, the eldritch rogue racket and the spellshot gunslinger way are the ones that I can think of that doesn't work too well for instance. Or worse, a player makes an ancient elf eldritch rogue.

  • @AvenKallan
    @AvenKallan17 күн бұрын

My favorite Pathfinder charachter so far is an Ancient Elf Rogue. Ancient Elf gave an extra Dedication feat and my rogue archtype was trickster rogue (pre rework) which gave me a free magical dedication. So I took Monk and Scroll Trickster. I put lots of skill advancement into all 4 spellcasting lores so I could cast spells of any tradition. I was an elf from a prestigious family who failed out of a magic academy because I had no actual magical capabilities, even though I was an excellent student. Since I'm constantly casting spells via magical items and carrying around lots of tomes and parchment everyone assumes I'm a spellcaster. I described my appearance as Milo from Lost City of Atlantis. From my Monk feats I took Stumbling stance, but rather than disguising my movements as being drunk I disguised it as being a bumbling academic.

I was just running Sky King's Tomb and a perfect use of the archetype system came up. At a certain point in SKT, the party runs into an animated doll type construct. It is pictured in the art as holding a teddy bear, though that doesn't appear in the stats. But I flavored it as instead of a fists attack, it was swinging the teddy bear loaded with iron filling (nearby source of iron). One of my players was very annoyed by this, killed the doll, and rescued the teddy. Used the stuffing from a nearby sofa to fix it, and rolled really well on the Crafting check. So I offered them the choice to replace their current archetype (they were level 3 in a Free Archetype campaign) with the Familiar Master archetype, and I haven't seen a player that excited in years :)

Turns out I use it ALL THE TIME. You can delay someone from being swallowed, then have the party nuke the thing that had tried to swallow it before the turn is up. Also great for preventing a character from going down. He also has Lose The Path, Wooden Double, and even Distracting Flattery. He's basically there to prevent anything bad from happening.

I like Untamed Druids with the Beastmaster Dedication. It's basically playing a second order without having to choose for which one you want to spent you class feats for. You just go down the full animal path. Also, combining your Battle Forms and your Companion(s) makes it absolutely possible to play a melee druid with zero strength, at least on lower levels. This makes it possible to spent some points on Charisma and getting more out of your capability to talk with animals or druid feats regarding demoralize. So it's also a great bonus out of combat with a lot of roleplay potential.

It's the key difference between building upwards (more power, bigger numbers, better spells, etc.) and building outwards (more variety, more ways to use smaller numbers, more spells, etc.) It means your group of 4 characters is far more likely to have a solution to the problem they face because 2 of them have the skills for it and someone has a spell, and they can all help the last person, rather than everyone relying on one spell and 3 lucky dice rolls

So the GM is allowing Free Archetype for the Pathfinder Agent (and the three "upgrade" Archetypes, Scrollmaster, Spellmaster, and Swordmaster) since the premise of that AP is that the PC's are members of the Varisian Pathfinder Lodge =] I'm playing a Wizard who's going to spec into Scrollmaster later, and will also be using my own class feats to get Psychic multiclassing and eventually the Time Mage archetype once I have sufficient feats in the three others! Basically he's going to be a chronomancer who knows things he really shouldn't be able to xP

Characterwise, I'll probably list some others but - My first was a fetchling monk/wrestler/oozemorph. Was inspired by the ring/grudge. Climb anything, grab and strangle or throw ppl. Cloak of the bat to grab while hanging from the ceiling - Most recent was a mother vulture cleric/swarmkeeper/spore druid to keep with the whole decay theme (and enough shrooms to make the last of us proud) - Next one's probably going to be an armor inventor/clockwork reanimator/golem grafter. Does a lot of self mod a la the mechanicus, testing them on the minion first.

Free archetype can be taken off direct levelling and treated as a roleplaying reward too. Though some will work better than others and it should be something the player wants rather than the GM just deciding on one for them. For instance, a player may seek an NPC out or train up a relationship to gain the sniping duo there and then without waiting for their next level up (so long as they are high enough level). And it gains feats when it is narratively right rather than by level (or loses them if narratively right, such as abusing a relationship core to it or a celebrity going into hiding for too long, and so long as it's an agreed style of play).

One of my favourite uses of Free Archetype was an Inexorable Iron Orc Magus with the Swashbuckler Archetype. By taking the Braggart Style and the Antagonise Swashbuckler Feat it allowed me to get a 'taunt' with Intimidation, forcing opponents to attack me as the party's tank or get penalties to everything because they couldn't get rid of their Frightened Condition.

I love running free archetype, and I wish my first PF2 character could have one, I picked an archetype feat basically any time I could. She's a Gnome Druid with the Monk Dedication. So I gave her elemental Ki Strikes and use buff spells for high speed and damage on unarmed attacks, but she can also retreat quickly and still blast stuff with strong primal spells. Will this work out on high levels? Mabe not, but free Archetype would probably make it easier.

I play an Orc Dragonblooded sorcerer with the wrestler free archetype. He's also got his orc ferocity and his warmask. Is it optimal to charge into melee and grapple things... no. Is it absolutely a blast to play for him to refer to himself as a dragon while carrying on like a pro wrestler? Yes. And in a different game, I have a wizard who's a Loremaster and an Eldritch Researcher, which just doubles down on that classic bookworm stereotype but is also a lot of fun to just lean so heavily into.

However, if I ever actually run it, I think I will just use Free Archetype without restriction because some people may not want to have magic(I'll want reasons why they are at a magic school of course) and others might START as a spellcaster to begin with thus wanting to add something else to their character rather than MORE spellcasting.

Personally, archetypes and sometimes free arche are necessary to make my char concepts work. They're also about 90% of the character variety in my opinion It's usually popular to pair it with starting at level 2 both to skip the issues with level 1 and start with the archetype (useful for builds built around proficiencies the arche gives) The 3 action economy generally keeps the power level in check One way to limit options could be having the player give character reasons for the arche instead of mechanical ones The other issue I've seen with f.a. is if the archetype you want to take starts at lvl 4 I've never seen the ignore the special text done. Usually theyre allowed to take a skill (or class with a generous gm) feat in that slot instead

She has the Linguist Archetype and Dual Weapon Warrior Dedication, she got the second one at Level 6. I do have my Orc siblings who have the Beastmaster Dedications as well, one is a Ranger with a Wolf (Fang) and Raven (Jay), and the other is a Fire Druid with a Fire Elemental (Cinder) I also need to include there are some archetypes that allow an exception to 2 or more dedication feats like Pathfinder Agent Dedication allows for Pathfinder School of Spells, Scrolls, or Swords to supercede this rule. The Knights of Lastwall, Firebrands, Hellknights, and Magic Warrior also include it in their texts.

If I remember right, Gatewalkers introduced a similar thing like free archetype with their deviant abilities, essentially adding a little extra flavour into the AP. I've never played flat out with the Free Archetype variant rules, but I think it would definetely work well with certain campaigns, if your players are gearing up to join the hellknights, attempting to become wandering cavaliers or just interested in fleshing themselves out more. Up till now I've been letting my players access archetype feats as a free feat if they involve some downtime or ingame engagement, but just letting them have it is something I'm interested in trying out!

I let my players take free archetype later on in a campaign to try and flesh out their characters, most of them have been great and thematic but I seriously regret the power creep the rogue got. level 16 rogue withthe dual-weapon warrior archetype+ quicksilver mutagen (greater) leads to some disgusting damage spikes. He usually opens with dual weapon blitz on a enemy (offguard due to rolling stealth) crits twice, and then if the enemy is still alive finishes them off with two weapon flurry. I'm having a really hard time balancing encounters with him versus the rest of the party.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned in the comments but I just wanted to note that this barbarian with message concept doesn't work super well, if that Barbarian is using their main class feature, being Rage, as you can't use actions with the concentrate trait unless they also have the rage trait. So barbarian isn't typically the best to cross class with a spellcasting class for that reason. Hopefully the upcoming Bloodrager archetype will have a cool way around this.

@undrhil yeah, that's an option, but unless they make it better in the remaster the action economy in combat for that is not that great. A whole action to then use another single action spell then you have one more action and then your turn is over and you have to use that Moment of Clarity action again on your next turn to do something again with the Concentrate trait, so I wouldn't call it an ideal build strategy.

I always enable free archetypes in my games, and automatic bonus progression for more flavour. It just makes characters so much more unique and versatile. And I think the quirkiest character I build up to now is an Awakened Animal Kineticist (Earth gate, later adding wood gate) having Wild mimic dedication and very late in the progression Stonebound dedication. It's a character built to burrow beneath the opponent and blast them out of this world, either with kinetic blasts or with melee attacks from below. The base animal I chose is the Damibwa.

I like archetypes but I don't use free archetype unless it's a theme game where it helps fit the theme. Like i would use it in a thieves guild campaign to help characters fill their role in the guild better even if they aren't playing a rogue. Or if I wamted an undead campaign to give them their umdead archetype they wanted. As a rule that always improves every campaign I use it in, I have to say Background Relics are my favorite.

You mentioned that Level 1 is unchanged. I wouldn't say that's entirely accurate. Granted, you still build a level 1 character the same as before, but many archetypes do have a prerequisite that you might have to think about at level 1. You need a +2 to INT to take the wizard archetype, for instance. And if you don't have that at level 1, you likely aren't going to get it at level 2.

When I first thought about trying to run some PF I was worried about one of the people I used to play with doing this too. Glad I am not the only one with players like this!

11:07 Not that I've seen and I have DUG DEEP into archetypes! There are ones that people argue about not actually being archetypes feats because they are also skill feats(this is NOT true, people are just stupid)! Now you aren't, R.A.W. at least, allowed to take a Skill feat from an archetype with your class feats(or your FA feats I assume) but that seems like a stupid rule so I don't use it, even on the Feats that are odd leveled. If a player wants to hold a feat or use a higher one to take the lower level feat seems fine to me. I'll find out eventually as I'm running a game currently!

This, like the variant on magic that doesn't affect homemade ca, are the only ways to fix a game like pathfinder 2 which for me is full of problems that the people who play it try to solve with famous homemade rules. We for example let's play with a variant like this where you can decide whether to also take the archetype of your class if you do so take a skill first in order to align yourself with the warrior (because if it is legal for him and all the monsters are more powerful because of him and its +2) then it's fine for everyone.. but you can see that it's a game that lacks stuff.. things that increase the characteristics are still missing, the rods for metamagic are missing, everything is blocked for fear that the classes will do critical damage or whatever.. there are no talents to raise the DC of spells and another thing I hate is that they know it and continue to throw out content for a game that isn't good and people fix it.. sorry if I wrote it wrong but I'm using google translator hoping that someone will read and complain and fix it
