Archery Coaching Case Study #2 - Head Position, Anchor, Eye Dominance, Elbow Height, and more!

Welcome back to our 2nd Archery Coaching Case Study!
Tasked with trying to make a shorter video, we've let Jarryd loose with the camera again for his follow up archery coaching session with Josh. Well, the video is no shorter, but it's jam packed with wisdom bombs!
In this video, you get to see the progress in Josh's archery technique after just one week. Jarryd dissects his recurve technique and demonstrates solutions to some of the most common recurring issues when it comes to recurve archers technique and development.
This includes:
- How to get the correct head position
- How to get the most consistent anchor position
- Setting the front shoulder
- How to keep a relaxed bow hand
- How to screen for eye dominance, and what to do about it
- How to increase shooting poundage WITHOUT compromising your archery technique
- How to determine the optimal elbow height
- Various other rambles from Jarryd
Don't forget to comment below, and tell us what you've learned, and how it has helped you!

Daughter shoots NASP and I had a really hard time finding good instruction video's. I've searched for over a year before finding this one. These 2 are the best I've found for building a strong shooting foundation. You may want to put a NASP tag into your video so more may find it. Our anchor is a bit different with middle finger touching corner of mouth but shooting structure is the same and would help so many. Thank you for putting these up. NASP goes through the 11 steps to proper archery technique but misses about 100 others. Great to get started but noticed my daughter starting developing some hard to break habits. It all begins with proper shooting form and nothing else after matters until you master those like you show.

@@RogueArcheryTV Best tip so far is in the pre-draw process. Mastering posture, balance, shoulder position is all basic but not taught well or in any detail. Shooting form is taught but only to the point is this is how it should look.. Not why it should look this way or how to get there. I've seen where it's good to draw a little above shoulder level so it sets the ball of the humorous into the shoulder socket. When shoulders, arm, wrist are properly aligned, the tension is on the bones and not onto the muscle. Just about everything in these video's will help her shoot more consistent. This is her second season and we have picked up a lot of bad habits trying to learn ourselves. The under jaw anchor doesn't apply so we kind of lose some insight when locking in after loading phase.

  • @DeeYohsGarage

    @DeeYohsGarage

    4 жыл бұрын

There are no sights with NASP so it's all arrow sight picture and her anchor point are tip of middle finger to corner of her mouth. This seems to make her draw length short of full lock with her elbow back.

This was very well explained. Once you understand why certain hand, elbow, and shoulder positions contribute to draw consistency- it becomes much easier to remember to do them each and every time. Thanks for this thorough lesson. Also, I am left eye dominant and right handed and had to opt to right handed draw after trying left handed. I’ve been training my right eye to focus by closing the left eye through the whole shot. But I am going to try closing my left eye briefly to set my right eye up to focus and then keeping both eyes open to see if my aim improves with greater depth perception.

The question after 22 minutes about how long it takes makes me reflect upon what would have happened if these foundational issues had been addressed. ..... the Korean mandate of not letting the target get in the way has layers that we need to consider. Although I have gone back to doing the basics, I can see improvements. Archery seems to be a process where the process is always about what is foundational.

  • @RogueArcheryTV

That's a great point Edward. I firmly believe that archery is more about process than anything else, and over time this just becomes more and more evident. @@RogueArcheryTV The detail and thorough, conversational explanations. I particularly appreciate how you show everything throughout the session. It becomes easier to imagine oneself being coached rather than just watching a "here's how you should do it" video. Where I live there is no coaching so this is invaluable to me. So, I am self-coaching. (Yeah, I'd seriously love to come to Australia for a week!). The challenging part is self-assessment. I've video'd myself and tried to compare with what you're explaining but it falls a bit short. I have figured out (I think!) something about my shots, however: If I hold a good aim at a particular point over several shots--I usually shoot eight arrows--and there is fairly tight grouping (whether I hit my aiming spot or not) then the form was probably good. If the form was bad then the arrows will be spread out. That usually happens when I am trying to incorporate a new step, such as I am now try to do with expansion. So not having a good understanding or feel for expansion is resulting in arrows everywhere! But again, I really appreciate what you are posting; it is very helpful. Thank you!

Thanks! 'Total Archery' is a great book and vol 1 was very influential to my coach and I when I was starting archery many years ago! What I am teaching in these video's is nothing new. There are no secrets here. A lot of my teachings you may find to be consistent with Total Archery but I don't claim to teach the KSL system. I have accumulated techniques, training styles and teaching methods from many sources that I have found to be most effective and it has taken me many years to develop the most effective ways to teach this stuff. One of the difficult things to communicate in any book is not the 'what', but the 'how'. As in, how to actually implement a technique, how to screen for weaknesses or inconsistencies, and how to undertake an intervention for errors. This is why I am creating these video's. On a daily basis I see archers and coaches struggle with the fundamentals, not because they don't understand the theory, but they have no idea how to actually teach it. When things go wrong, few people know how to intervene and get you back on track! If you're looking for another book, one of the best books on this is Kim Hyung Tak's book, it's quite comprehensive and well worth the investment. 💪🏹🎯

As a school principal ex-instrumental music teacher really enjoying watching you teach 1:1. You don’t want a school job do you? 🤣. I shoot longbow, bare, traditional, string-crawling and anchoring off the eye tooth. I shoot this way because I live on a rural acreage and use archery for rabbit control. As such I want to be point-on target. Any advice on optimal angle of the drawing elbow with the higher anchor?

Although I'm not sure you can afford my salary 😉 The elbow height theory is covered in more detail here: www.roguearchery.com.au/single-post/2019/09/07/coaching-case-study-elbow-height The principle for optimal elbow height should be the same for all archery disciplines, because force vectors don't care whether you're shooting barebow or sighted! Not a silly question at all! SPT drills are sequential draws and holds with the bow. They are very important for reinforcing technique structure, and building bow conditioning. A basic version of SPT is, hold for 20s, rest for 40s. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps. This will be covered in the next video in a bit of extra detail 👍 Does that answer your question?

@@RogueArcheryTV that certainly does answer my question. Is this something you would recommend doing daily, or maybe 3 times a week? At the moment I try to work on my draw with exercise bands but the issue is it doesn't reinforce proper grip with the bow hand or a proper hook, as it's just pulling bands.

  • @RogueArcheryTV

@@Frob2323 yes, that's why we use the pipe bow in the video, as it also gives the archer the ability to feel the right anchor and get the string on the nose. We then add therabands to the bow to increase the draw weight. If you're just developing technique, then yes, SPT and tech draws (as per the video) should be a daily drill, and is even more important than shooting. Later on when you shoot large volume of arrows, SPT can be dropped back to 3 days each week, but at a much higher intensity.

For the pipe I cut a 3m pipe in half, I dont think it's necessary to be overly precise. You could match it to your bow length to satisfy your OCD if necessary 😉 There are different types of PVC plastic so pick one that has a little bit of resistance. It should be around 8-12# at full draw. For the bands, I tie them in loops that are the about the same as your brace height. Good luck 👍👍👍

@RogueArcheryTV I just found your channel and already went through a few videos → They are awesome! Extremely detailed and very interesting. I like how you explain what to do, why to do it and how to do it! Through your detailed explanations, I already found a few points in the shot process which I have to fix/focus on. My question is: What kinda PVC pipe could I use to create such a pipe bow? Is there a how-to video by you or one you would recommend? I have an older string which I would like to use (or I use a new one), the ear was loosening a bit, so I replaced it. I am roughly a year into archery and my bow is a beginners bow (recurve), 20 lbs by 28 inch draw and at a full draw(29 3/4 inch) I have roughly 23 lbs on the fingers. But I definitely would like to work on the steps you talk about with a training bow and the theraband tubings. Hope to hear from you and will definitely check out more of your videos and sources =)

Honestly, there's not too much more science to it than that! The goal is to create a very low resistance bow to learn skills in isolation.

@@RogueArcheryTV Thank you very much. I will definitely try out the pipe bow for training in between. Key lessons: - Optimizing the different steps one after another. So far I tried to understand the different steps and was thinking I can focus on them nearly in any order (of course one (max 2) at once). - Elbow does not have to form a line with the arrow, I somehow read over that detail in the book of kisik lee. - Further I have to figure out how to anchor below the jaw line, in the past I anchored on the side (somehow this was more reliable to me) I will try a few approaches here. - Getting into pre-draw without "drawing", just using the shoulder rotation. I probably was already drawing while raising, and in addition probably more from the biceps and not the back muscles. Even though, I tried to focus on using my back muscles. I filmed myself today for the first time during shooting. This showed me parts I am (presumably) fine in and parts which I have to work on. Interesting to me was, after watching your explanation of the "raising", where just the arms move, I thought I am not doing this correctly. But almost every time it looked good :). Now I have a full list of stuff I have to go through in the next sessions. :) If I will ever visit Australia, I try to check out your archery area! Hope you and your team will still have time in the future to continue on this channel with such great content! ;)

  • @RogueArcheryTV

It's pretty difficult to coach in the comments section, especially since I can't actually see what you're doing. It shouldn't be painful anywhere through the shot process. If it is, it could be a technique problem, the bow could be too heavy, or it could be an underlying issue with mobility, scar tissue in the ligament / tendon or another soft tissue issue (see my other videos on what comes before technique, and shoulder health and mobility for archers). If it's just some muscular tightness, then some shoulder mobility work will be beneficial, but if it's a sharp pain, then you will need to see a skilled soft tissue therapist, and I strongly suggest finding someone who can do a combination or ART and dry needling. I hope this helps mate. Let me know how you go.

For reference, let's say if I'm standing in a square stands and I just look straight forward, my head would be 90 degrees from the target, on the other hand if I rotate my head all the way around to face the target then my head would be 0 degrees from the target. Thanks.

Hey Pangtopia, fair question. The head position is very important as it impacts string picture and anchor. It would be lovely if the head angle is the same for everyone, but it doesn't work quite like that. If I was to approximate, it would be 'about' 60 degrees towards the target. This CCS does provide a little feedback on head position with the corrections I make in Josh, but I do cover this in a bit of detail in my Coaching course if you're looking for more info.

@@RogueArcheryTV also, tell me where the bow hand actually lies during a full draw Like, this is an important question which has been hindering me a lot. What happens is, in a natural draw, my bow hand is actually making an angle with the line joing my shoulders (shoulder-line) forwards. What that makes me feel is that the bow is collapsing me in, and that spoils my posture. None of your videos show the bow position at full draw from the "eye" point of view. Where does the bow lie when I'm at full draw; does it lie in line with my shoulders, or a little out of line and in front of my chest? When I align and look myself in the mirror, should I see the bow cover my string or should the bow lie left or right of the string at my nose. It would be very helpful of you to answer.

The only right form of drawing is the most biomechanically efficient one for the right instance, holding the bow constantly in a horizontal position is just a waste of muscle energy, the right elbow up just tires the muscle as well, it wont make any difference if you have the elbow up/in a line or down, since you are not using the back delt to draw, you are using the scapular muscles, better to have joint stacking for more energy efficiency and stability, you could torque your body as well a little bit to save on scapular retraction energy, dont forget that you can use the movement of your legs and hips as well to make everything works with gravity, this is just too stiff and a lot of stuff doesnt make sense biomechanically, can you still shoot? Of course but is not the optimal way
