Archery Bows winners and loosers of 2023 and why?

Спорт

I discuss for 2023 which bows sold well, which bows struggled to sell. What was successful and why I think certain items are successful.
I discuss Target compound bows, Hunting compound bows, starter compound bows, recurve bows and what brands are doing well in 2023.

This "report" was absolutely fascinating, Steven. Thank you for thedetailed insight into the world of the archery dealer. Your knowledge of this arena is nothing short of amazing. Two thoughts (which you may dismiss as misguided or irrelevant): I believe you said that Hoyt is the only company in the United States developing and producing recurve bows. I think BEAR would have something to say about that. 2. Another archery company you didn't mention certainly has a presence in today's market, and that's SANLIDA. For example, its relatively new Hermit X10 ILF Hunting Recurve package includes a machined 6061 aluminum riser and foam/cross-carbon limbs for a remarkable $300 US. Hope you have a minute or two to respond. Best, Chris (Maine, USA)

I can see you still have the Bowtech Insanity CPX 😏 I'm trying to get one in good condition... I've seen your review on it soooo many times... Too bad I'm in Portugal, just the shipping costs (not to mention customs) are terrible for a second hand bow but here we are, you have a great condition one and I'm on the other side of the planet "fighting" to get one... Regarding your reviews they are just top, top top... Hope you don't lose any supplier for honesty 😂 Great job Steven and great to see you full recovered 💪 Keep going.

I just bought a couple Junxing off ebay/aliexpress, a m109 compound (the nightbird 'triangle') and a f171 recurve (black hunter with alloy riser). Being a total beginner (probably under 100 arrows), these two bows have been an amazing introduction to archery; with a price which if I choose not to continue, won't be much to the hip pocket - though I think I've found a new hobby for the time being.. BTW, I'm also from SA. EDIT: LOL I just realized that your review video (from like 5 years ago) of the triangle bow actually convinced me to buy one..

Very interesting. There where some brands I had barely heard about. And yes, I think what brands the sellers has depends on where you are in the World. So yes, there is probably quite a difference from Australia to for example Denmark, where the sport is small. By the way - for me the design and the look of the bow, available camo options is also very important, so aside from specs that is also a parameter for me. Now I normally use camo even for my target bows (I don't participate in International target archery after all and in general I participate mostly in 3D archery, and target mostly for practice).

I will add that while I love my Triax..AND my Bear, i would love to have a bow that i dont need a shop to work on. I believe in supporting local shops but they are becoming extinct, and the ones that do exist seem to specialize in brands. So, like you point out, having my Triax worked on becomes a problem sometimes. We need to get over the one-brand only nonsense, its as arcaic as only serving coke OR pepsi when i pay $150 for a meal.

I agree with Mathews 100%. While its supposedly a great bow to shoot in USA, all other regions with limited or delayed access to it's accesories could have a lot pain with it. Might be a hassle to set up and to sell to anyone. Bowtech finally made me buy it when they introduced SD cam to their new reckoning. It should fit me perfectly, can't wait to try. Finally they have an options for short people. Elite was high on the list of possibilities too, some folks in my country got one and it's praised in general. Have shot Topoint target bow and it's really great for the price range it's in. Hoyt might have not be having such a wild time but I'd consider them ol`reliable for people that do not want to take risks and just have a great shooting bow, such as PSE.

that's what really bothers me about the HBT cam and ultimately the reason why I stuck with the SVX (luckily!). Most people are around 29" +/-1", so with the 40" Stratos, you're either at the very end or the very bottom of the cam. They should've made three cam sizes with overlapping draw length ranges, so everyone can actually use the letoff and 1/4" DL adjustment features on the new cam. If I had gone with the small cam, I would've only been able to shoot it with 75% on the longest setting and had I gone with the #2 cam, I would've needed to set it at 70% or 65% (which is a lot more holding weight than SVX cam btw!) at it's shortest setting, where it's also super ineffienct and slow.

Watching the finals Lancaster Archery Tournament both the Olympic Recurve and compound classes appeared to be less a contest and more who would make the first mistake (shoot a 9 or 10). While there is no question the archers were very, very good in both of those classes, it was still more or less simply one 11 after another. At the same time, the Barebow finals were actually fun to watch, less predictable, more of an uncertain adventure forcing the archers to shoot will with fewer items to "help" them shoot well. I will stick with Barebow and sell both of my compounds if I can get a decent price for either or both. My dream rig is a 25" CD Riser with high end limbs - not sure of the company at this time but have had very good success with the Win&Win Motiv C5 limbs.

I have a lot of respect for people who shoot that well and the work they put in to reach the level at which they shoot. I also know (personal experience) it is far easier to shoot a compound accurately using sights etc. than it is to shoot a Barebow accurately. There is a lot more forgiveness in shooting Olympic recurve and compounds than is available for Barebow or trad archery using sights, stabilizer bars and more (not to mention the let-off of a compound), none of which are allowed in Barebow. I like the challenge and I like the fact that with nothing to make things easier I have to focus on creating a very consistent shot process. That is also why I enjoy watching the Barebow competition more.@@travistwwreck1535

i know my reason why i did not change to a stratos from an invicta. As an invicta shooter with SVX cams i love the way the bow has a kind of agressive feel to it and i know most people who shot the invicta with SVX cams did as well. i took my dampeners off to make it even more foreward kicking and i love it. when i shot the stratos (with SVX) it just was to dead in the hand for me and the feeling what made the invicta so likable for allot of people is mostly gone even if you remove the dampening on it. then i tried the new HBT cam and it is even more dead in the hand than the SVX (witch is expected of course) but it just is not a typical hoyt feeling if you shot any of their previous bows. That is the reason i did not switch from invicta to stratos and know why more people did not switch. it was just because the feeling was "softer" than the bow they love.

Bowtech makes a solid product, especially their hunting bows, but they have to have made the dumbest business decision out of all the companies, dropping basically their entire Pro Staff except for Paige Pierce. Their contigency policy was questionable for years, but now their corporate greed will really hurt the company long term, just like it happened to Elite and Prime. Also, I personally don't like the fancy colors of the new Bowtechs or Darton AT ALL! Just absolutely not my thing. PSE have some great looking anodized colors, the powder coat ones are okay but it's not okay that it's not advertised as different finished and it also costs the same, regardless of color. Also, there are matt and glossy anodized bows of the same color, which is also weird. The Supra X is my favorite "new" target bow for 2023, but I also think it's too expensive and the price should be a lot lower than the Dominator DUO, not just 200€. It's a lot cheaper to build and lacks a lot of features like the adjustable cable guard, the shoot through riser or even stainless steel bushings on the back side of the riser, it's just tapped straight into the riser.

So, I don't agree with how they handled Tim and Kyle at all. However, I talked to my local shop owner when leagues started this week. 95% of the customers that walk into his shop have no idea who Tim Gillingham is, let alone Kyle Douglass. I'm not sure of the overall value of pro shooters for your average archery purchaser, it's probably more than what the current Bowtech marketing department thinks it is, and probably less than what Tim thinks it is. All I know is that my Reckoning 36 Gen 2 is really the best bow I've shot, if any pro influenced me to at least try it, it was probably Paige, but that was to try it, once I shot it, it sold itself. I'm more than likely going to add a second one here soon. BTW, Bowtech has several non-fancy colors as well, it is nice they have options for everyone. My current one is the red with white limbs like in the video, I absolutely love the color, my next one will probably be the OD Green or FDE to potentially be used for hunting.

I like the bowtech bows and their tunability..... but after what they just did to tim gillingham and kyle douglas, I wont be getting one any time soon.. and I was very close to getting a reckoning gen 2. I always wanted to hate mathews just because they were so popular... until I won a trx38G2 and could no longer deny they shoot incredibly well. Super accurate and a pleasure to shoot... They lack on tuning but once its done, its done. What I REALLY like about mathews is they take care of their shooters.... they are not afraid to spend money on the people that keep the sport of archery growing. Both on the target side and the hunting side. Infact, they picked up BOTH gillingham and douglas.... So you can never say mathews does not support its pros. They have a heavy price tag, but at least I know its going back into keeping shooters paid.... unlike bowtech, who says they are going to pay 300k into grassroots archery... which I can almost guarentee they wont... Whoever their new marketing person is has lost their mind or has no clue about archery. Its a tight community and when you screw over 2 of the top pros at the same time, people notice. Besides, they had the best deal going with Paige, tim and kyle... They only had to pay 3 people to get loads of podiums... other companies have to pay a boat load of shooters to get the same amount of podiums. ... Atrocious management over there.... The engineers are fantastic and I applaud them... but the big wigs need to learn that having 3 of the best shooters in the world on your side is a good thing.... Oh well... Go Mathews, Elite, and PSE...

Bowtech made a legal business decision and it was the right one. I wished they had just rode them out, but understand why they didn’t. Tim and Kyle are good guys and great shooters but their cost wasn’t reflecting in sales. If roles were reversed, Tim and Kyle would’ve left Bowtech just as right and well. Some in the community need to quit kidding themselves. Target competitions and shooters don’t sell bows, hunting and recreation does. 90% of the archery community couldn’t tell you who won Vegas last year or who they shoot for. If you asked 10 shooters who a prominent person in the industry is, 9/10 would answer with a hunter. Levi Morgan and Paige Pearce are probably the only two target shooters that might actually sell bows but they are both heavily involved in the hunting community as well.

For the same bow yr after yr. Overly expensive components. Working/ tuning on compared to competition is a pain. Modules, etc

What is a “looser” bow? Are we trying to say “loser?” Why can’t people ever figure this one out?

Of course good quality goods are made in USA not always the best. My 2 last off road SUVs were Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Toyota 150. The Jeep had a more powerful Diesel engine but came not close to the Toyota's off road capability. I am currently shooting a Gillo GT riser but also own a Kinetic Sovren riser. I shoot about the same with those bows (barebow) when using the same carbon limbs but the Gillo is unquestionably more quiet. I have also a "good quality" chinese limbs from Nika and Sanlida and I don't feel much difference between those and my Win&Win and Hoyt limbs. Maybe it is just my bad shooting with them all.

Here's my report on what bow won.........The Chinese rubbish I have a dealership for and can make bigger margins on and don't need to stock any parts hahahahaha. Forget the Mathews Lift being one of the best bows ever released because I don't stock Mathews, so they lose. And Hoyt are not good either because I don't have any current model stock of those either........ So yeah the two best bows on the hunting market are crap.....clown And yeah recurve is sick bro, not just for nerds wearing booties. HE ISNT A DISTRIBUTOR FOR THE BEST GEAR SO HE CRAPS ON IT. hahahahahaha. Never buying anything from this guys ever

@sveinnsveinbjornsson5086 open your eyes. May as well be Ali Express, promoting bows he buys for probably $100.00 to $200 made by slave labour. I'm Australia as well. I buy from shops that sell the good stuff

The total lack of respect for real Archery brands Mathews and Hoyt just because the Sydney and Melbourne boys massively out sell him in quality product. He is there pumping out Ali Express imitation looking rubbish and laughing all the way to the bank on you fools.

@@badlordboris9938 You have a problem with a video on what makes have done well in his business and why he believes certain brands have done well and why others may have failed? Why is this a problem to you? How does it effect you personally? You show nothing but contempt for someone who is continually giving insight to his business and for other people to consider his experiences. Manufacturers should look at what people like Steven and other retailers have to say, they are the ones who deal directly with their customers, not to do so is perhaps dangerous to their business. You seem to have the typical elitist attitude of looking down at people who do not use the 2 or 3k bows and associated equipment. Thankfully you are outnumbered by a factor of 1000's to one, so go take it out on your dog or your wife. We will continue to buy the Chinese budget bows and beat half you equipment snobs in competition.

Leave the bows that you don't sell out of your reviews. Your whinging about Hoyt and your ultimate hatred for Mathews is an ugly look on you, Steven. It's no wonder they won't let you be a vendor, and don't act like that's not true. The fact that you don't technically understand why Mathew's makes so many mods is probably another good reason you are not a vendor. Move on.

"You're only recommending bows that you sell" ... well, yes. I assume that's why you're selling them.
