The dealer I worked at had a strict helmet fitting policy. We were not allowed to sell a helmet unless it was properly fitted. An Arai would take a few minutes longer due to varying shapes but the customers very much appreciated the service. P.S. When the average buyer thinks the helmet fits, it's probably too large.

This sizing protocol is utopian. It would be absolutely awesome if it were being executed at the Retailer level. The retailer I’m referring to is Cycle Gear. If they know this information they certainly aren’t performing these steps to properly fit a high end product like Arai. Arai is top notch. Time for the Arai rep to reinvest some time in getting their stores to follow these steps.

Very well said. I'm in the middle of purchasing a Helmet for Shifter Karting and Arai has always made sense. Thanks for that Video, and the explanation of Safety.

That's why every rider should only goto a physically located Helmet shop that have staff that are willing to go through this fitting process. It does still exist, you just have to find a place that specializes in Helmets. Buying online might be cheaper, however you are just ripping yourself off in terms of safety. You only get one head in life!!

I used Arai’s dealer locator and the first helmet that I found in stock 320 miles away. After five and a half hours of driving, I tried on an extra large Signet-X. After around five minutes, I had a red spot on my forehead. That moved me up to double extra large. I then wore it around for an hour. It appears to fit. The shop was out of the next two sizes of cheek pads, so I will have to order some to see which size is correct. It would be nice if Arai helmets were more available. After over 30 years I finally have a helmet that cruelly fits.

The main reason there are so many riders with improper sized helmets is the manufacturers like Arai Shoei Hjc etc.... Everyone of them uses a slightly different size system, a standardized size system across the broad would solve all the size problems bikers have.

I agree ! Once, when I went out to buy a good helmet I tried at least ten different helmets of different brands. The ONLY one that had a perfect fit was a Shoei RF-108V. It didn't surprise me that the shop owner told me it was the most popular type of helmet..... ;-)

No doubt fit is tricky. I wonder if I have the correct size. I've pretty much always used the eyebrow movement with the helmet fitting. According to Arai charts (and most others) I should be a large (60cm). I've tried a large twice before. HEADACHE AFTER A SHORT TIME, which just got worse with time. I am admittedly, more of a Shoei head. I think I've met Bruce at a motorcycle show before. Great info from him.

@@unknownpmc5581 , I'm sure you probably received bad service but if that guy had an inkling that you might be using the store for sizing just so you could buy online his behavior could be understandable. The first rule to good service is being a good customer.

I went to buy an Arai from my local Cycle Gear dealer. They were clueless. I had to ask them to measure my head. And they only had one model in stock (the Corsair, as I found out only by looking at label) When I asked them what model helmet (knowing about the different shapes among models) they said..."oh that's an Arai." Idiots. I took my chances online. I've got a good fit overall but need thicker cheek pads.

There are Dealers out there that are knowledgeable and will spend the time with you. The store I worked at had a very strict policy to fit every helmet that left the shop. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.

My biggest issue with helmets is wind noise. I wear a fully enclosed helmet sized correctly but the wind buffering is deafening and I have tinnitus to start with. I noticed that one manufacture has done something about it Quiet Ride Helmets but I haven't tried one yet. Why hasn't Arai or Shoei done something similar. To me the hearing issue is just as important as the crash protection because you experience the noise issue every time you ride. Most manufactures have their quietest helmets but none are really quiet enough. This is an area in helmet science that needs vast improvements. Wind noise is a serious issue. Fix it!

+Dean Slater Try a neck scarf in combination with ear-plugs. I wonder how scooter riders just jump on with a half-helmet and speed off at 100dB everyday without going deaf.

+Jeremy Freemantle Neck scarf does nothing other than keep my neck warm. I did noticed the other day that if I tip my head down the noise gets worse and if I tip my head back far enough the sound goes away all together. This is all at speed of course. Riding under 70 it's Ok but who rides that slow? Not me. So the helmet is a quiet one, Shoei GT-Air, but the aerodynamics on the outside suck. This can be improved with better wind tunnel testing and design IMHO. A stick on air diffuser near the forehead part of the helmet might do it and I thought I saw one on the internet somewhere on a helmet but can't find it again to figure out where they got it.

  • @Random_Tangent

I have the same helmet, the GT-Air with drop down sun visor. It does need to be "snapped" shut on the front latch for the main visor to be properly sealed. I was fitted by a trained Shoei "fitter" who told me that having a really snug fit with the padding can help reduce wind noise as most of the air flow we hear comes in from the bottom so the aerodynamic shape of the helmet really doesn't eliminate so much noise. I suspect that air sneaks up and in from the neck straps, up to the gap between the neckroll and cheek pads that leads back to the space for your ears.

+Jeremy Freemantle The last time I rode a few weeks ago I did some experiments. I tried riding with my head tipped down like I was looking at the tank and the wind noise got real bad. I then tried with my head back like I was looking at the sky and the heavy rumble was gone. I can't ride that way but this tells me that the issue is an aerodynamic one with the helmet which means the GT-Air on me on this bike has a flaw. I was in clean air in both of these tests. The helmet is very quiet at the right angle in clean air. What I need to do is find a shop that will let me ride with a few different helmets and find one that is quiet looking straight ahead. I'd like to try the Schuberth S2 and see how it does but I'd try any quality helmet that might be quiet. The problem with shops is that they overcharge for helmets. An S2 at BMW is about $700 or online for $375. That's a big difference.

Not complicated. Just go to the store, find the one that fits your budget and measured circumference size of your head. Lastly, try the helmet for 30 minutes or more, then you will know if that helmet is suitable or not. Suitable helmet will not give headache, not pressing on certain parts of the head, not moving much when pulled or pressed on any direction and it is snugly fit. For me, helmet is fit first before brands and standards. So any reputable brands will works as long it is perfectly fits.
