The original song was about sex, not beauty standards. She was pretty much saying treat me like a kid treats a doll, undress me and do whatever you want to me.

Two young people lost in a senseless superficial world, the girl still tries to make sense of it and be happy but the boy has already given up so he encourages her to just come party with him and drown her sorrow in alcohol.

Ah, yes, but as other commenters have remarked, Ken sounds like an abusive partner. So, while Barbie's observations are a cry for help coming from a desperate individual at odds with society in general, and her partner in particular, Ken sounds like a soulless monster who solves his inner turmoil by turning it on his partner in the form of unwanted sexual advances and compulsive partying, of the "you better smile, doll, or else!" variety. The crazy part about these is it's like SO serious and the guy/girl is actually so incredibly talented at both music making and performing

The original song is already super sad. Part of the brilliance of the original is that it's literally two songs: One is a tonally happy song about literally barbie dolls. The other is about women as toys for men. Impact is greater with the original as the tone stands in stark contrast to the underlying message.

Sounds like two people having a existential crisis. Barbie is realizing that her life and relationships are a plastic facsimile of a happy life. Ken has also or is realizing the same thing. but is trying to desperately block it out with partying. It could almost be a reprise of the original song. Her and ken start out excited and having fun in the original, but as the party dies down and the alcohol withers away there left their own crippling depression. It’s not out of an action out of deceit. The girl has such a beatiful voice. Nice cover!

This version is so much more accurate. I always thought the lyrics were depressing and more about a woman being whatever her man wanted whenever he wanted and pretending that his abuse and control was just fine. This is how I always actually envisioned what was going on.

You are correct. I mean, the lyrics are the same. e.g. "i can beg on my knees" - that is either a consensual fetish or, more likely, a red flag of a toxic, non-equal relationship.

Wow her voice is awesome! and her voice matches very good to Daves! I'd like to hear more songs with them together

this sounds like someting sting would write in the early 90s

Barbie is slowly realizing that her picture perfect life is not what she wants and ken is trying to cheer her up but he is too entangled up in his own problems

In this one, Barbie both knows and rejects the fact that no matter what she does (gets a law degree, becomes a doctor) All anyone sees is a pretty blonde who looks good in anything. So she accepts her fate and doesn't try to be anything else any more. Clinging to the few pleasures she's allowed to accept without judgement. Clothes, Ken, and going out to parties where everyone treats her like a queen. Poor Ken, who only wants the love of his life to smile again (even if it's a fake smile for the public) keeps urging and begging Barbie to get out of the house and let herself have fun again. And for a little while, each time, it works. But the downward spiral doesn't stop, and there's nothing else he can think of to do. They're both exhausted about the whole thing and Barbie is turning numb to it all.

I only just heard this clearly enough to know it was a song about doin it. This makes a 90s childhood much more confusing

It was more of a song about capitalism more than hooking up, but I guess the genius of the lyrics is such that its meaning is overarching

I always thought Ken was gay and Barbie was a beard. I always paired her with the neighbor's robot toys whenever we played lol. Soap opera scenes where she catches Ken cheating on her with a GI Joe was always a staple

This video unironically was what made me learn how to sing Barbie so easily. It's a lot slower than the original version.

Barbie sounds like she's a kidnapped victim and Ken is the offender.

@@nikytamayo the original made the relationship sound entirely consensual. She sounded hyped up and emphatic about her relationship with Ken, so that removes the creep factor. This version doesn't sound anywhere near as willing.

I actually love that part for its creepiness!

Very meloconic. I can see this being a music video showing the life of someone, from childhood to old age, as the elder version reflects on her past life.
