For starters, I'd be concerned about the button issue as if is is not just a dirt accumulated from running/swimming (you can soak the watch in water to see), than it may by a physical issue and that is covered by Garmin warranty and epic will be replaced free of charge. Secondly, if this is a Gen2 Pro largest of the 3 watches, to get 5 days with GPS activities is extremely poor and Im guessing there are some settings you can adjust and get easily at least double of that. (I use my Fenix 7X Pro daily with 1hour GPS activity daily and looking at 3+ weeks). Let me know if you need a had with Garmin related things ;)

@@ddmd5395 i tried the warm water for 10-15 minutes on the Garmin. Button still doesnt work! Trying to reach out to Garmin for warranty, but they keep sending me to diff departments & it's frustrating - I wish they had something like AppleCare+ which fixes it quickly in terms of battery life, maybe I have the highest accuracy settings on. Or because I live in a big city, it's always using multi-band GPS and the battery runs out faster?

@@ShervinShares Every country has a different warranty procedures. If you were in AU, its like 3 minutes to organise a replacement. I'll find out how it works in US as there may be a way to submit the request online by yourself. (or theoretically you can approach the store where you purchased the unit to replace it under warranty quoting manufacturing defect). As per GPS and battery, set it to AUTO SELECT for the best connection in your area. Also check if you use Pulse Oximeter (set it to manual check) as this is useless metric and if you have it on 24/7, it can cut down your battery by good 40-50%. ;)

I think an important thing to note here is environment. I’m an AWU user, but I also live in an urban setting. So many of the Apple Watch features compliment that lifestyle, while also “getting by” for fitness. Shervin lives in a similar environment. I feel like if I lived near trails and the mountains, I’d be more likely to own a Garmin.

I can tell you after having the AW Ultra for 10 months and now I have the Epix G2 I absolulty prefer the Epix and I wear it all the time. I prefer the buttons . I prefer the round design vs square. The main thing is that I find the GPS to be much more accurate on the Garmin. The Applewatch Ultra would give me different distances for the same route every time. The AW Ultra does respond more quickly and the screen is slightly sharper looking. I never want to take off the Epix off after a workout, in fact I find it much more comfortable that the AW-U. The AW-U felt heavier and it always felt like it was wobbling around on my small wrist.

Your resting heart rate is also important. The battery lasts a long time, even when the Garmin measures your heart rate every second when you are at rest. On the other hand, the Apple Watch does not have enough battery to measure heart rate while resting. And I know the Apple Watch's measurements are accurate, but is it useful to measure heart rate every second? Would measuring once every 10 minutes be useful?

Apple: needs a 3rd party app & subscription for most sport tracking and coaching. Apple does not currently support (without 3rd party apps) importing a GPX route to follow for trail runs, hikes, etc. Garmin: Two options of adaptive training: Daily suggested workouts (with the option of a goal) & Garmin Coach which provides a choice of 3 coaches and their associated approaches to assist you in your goal defined in the onboarding of the program. Breakdowns of what variables affect: recovery, sleep, VO2max score, etc. Daily insights about training accomplished with suggests how to approach the next day and finish the evening. Garmin can also have a user defined structured workout with specific labels for each exercise and rep counts. Garmin has included live tracking where a user can share their progress of a race or an activity to friends and family no extra fees or apps. (Apple needs a subscription to Strava to achieve something similar). While you pay a premium for Garmin it delivers a bunch of apps baked into the OS which means less need for nickel & dime subscriptions and a more fluid experience.

Main reason I wear my ultra 2 over my fenix 7 is the pay feature. Garmin pay doesn’t work with most banks. I don’t necessarily need gps and cellular on my watch (however it is nice). But the pay feature is so handy. However, I would never use my ultra 2 for outdoor activities. Garmin all day long. Apple doesn’t use onboard maps without the phone present. So without phone service, ultra is almost useless. Garmins onboard mapping is incredible, with or without the phone.

Just sold my Fenix 7x Saphire Solar. Loved that watch. Love the Garmin software. Having said that, the Ultra is a good step in the right direction and having LTE is the killer app of that device. Apple fitness software is getting better. Word is that perhaps the next iteration of the Ultra will have even better battery life. As it stands right now I get a solid 1-2 days on the Ultra with really quick full charge. It's not the two weeks that my 7x was getting, but again, that LTE. Garmin, when you release a true LTE device, I will come running back.

I use Arccos with my AWU and it is the best thing I’ve ever used for golf. I came from a fenix 6x pro and missed the shot detection so went with Arccos. It is far superior to Garmin golf imo. Far more data and the smart caddy reads the wind which I’ve found really accurate. It’s reduced my shots by about 10-15 per round in 2 months. As for battery after a 4.5 hour round whilst running Arccos I have 65-70% battery left. You could do 36 holes and still have 20-30% left which would get you through another day

I've got an Epix Pro 2 and Apple Watch 8 (I thought the Ultra would be too big, but I'll be getting an Ultra 2). I agree that the battery life is better for long trail activities, but I actually strongly prefer the maps on the Apple Watch (using WorkOutdoors, which is a one time purchase of $5 or so) to the Garmin maps. Even on the Epix Pro's screen the Watch screen and the way WorkOutDoors renders the map is just so much nicer. WorkOutDoors will also give you an off route warning. The one thing it's missing is turn-by-turn notifications. (I get around that by also using Footpath for the turn-by-turn, but I understand the point at which you're using two apps on the Watch starts to feel like too much of a hassle to many folks.) I live at sea level and hike in nearby mountains quite a bit (adopt a husky puppy and you suddenly have the most adorably and demanding personal trainer) and while I like the novelty of the acclimation data on my Garmin I have no idea whether it's accurate and what I'd actually do with the info.

@@NoxDineen I really appreciate you sharing your experience. From reading your reply, it got me thinking I need to explore workoutdoors more thoroughly. I downloaded it before on my AW7 and grew frustrated with the setup process. The accuracy of the app was wildly different than the Watch itself which also was a bummer. I guess I need to take another look and watch some tutorials.

I decided since I carry a phone during all of my other times that I'm not exercising, I would rid myself of the Smartwatch variety and now I only wear a Garmin. But not just for exercising because it lasts so long without charging. At this point I won't ever go back to a smartwatch.

I wear an Apple Ultra and Garmin 965. Many of their metrics I do not take seriously, but over time they do show trends. For heart rate, I rely on a Polar H10 strap. For people who are not gear geeks, an Apple Series 8 and H10 would be fine.

I did miss Apple Pay and Garmin pay doesn’t support many banks, I found a work around though, I got the Curve card from Samsung and it links every bank and then add that curve card to Garmin pay.

The thing about Garmin that pisses me off the most is the strenght training with it. Yes, its there, but man is it wrong all the time. Rep counts and heart rate completly wrong therefore calories burned are also wrong. Basicly its useless for a hybrid athlete. Its good for your runs but if you are doing other training sessions they will never be counted towards other metrics like training readiness, body battery etc.

Thanks for this valuable review. I agree with trust how you feel- athlytic on Apple Watch solely uses HRV and disregards sleep data for recovery, whereas Garmin incorporates sleep quality into the recovery metric and I feel this is more realistic because fatigue and mood from bad sleep factor into how recovered you feel, so I trust Garmin metrics more

Each watch has pros and cons as this video suggests, however, as I got more into fitness and hiking the Apple watch started to lose its appeal. Apple is smoother, prettier, and easier. The Garmin is WAY better at fitness and recovery. Even with 3rd party apps like Athlytic , Apple just can't bring it all together like Garmin. I'm waiting till Apple integrates more recovery and training metrics and more than likely I will switch back because ECOSYSTEM.

I have a Fenix 7, and my problem with it is that it isn't actually a smart watch and I think that's not mentioned enough. I tried to switch from the AW to the Garmin and in addition to missing texts, I found I would miss appointments and not see notifications. If the connect app goes to the background for too long, it won't push notifications. The calendar particularly runs off of the phone so although they might download, they won't notify you like you might expect. It's the same with weather too in that it won't download new data. If Garmin connect isn't up, there's no data even though the watch technically does have wifi. If Garmin could make a first class google suite integration where it had it's own calendar and list of todo's it would be a suitable replacement for my Apple watch. Until then, it's just a really amazing running watch.

Shervin, after watching your travels with the AWU I finally bought one a couple months ago and have been pretty impressed. Apple Pay is so good I haven't used my iPhone since putting the AWU on. Life changing. I've also taken the AWU on various hiking adventures and its altimeter is spot on with my Suunto's and Garmins. Battery life is as expected so it's not relevant for me given what the watch can do. Apple health is a mess and doesn't put all that data into context like the fitness watches do however, so that's a downside for me. But the AWU is rarely off my wrist. I've even started wearing two watches now :-) Love our travel episodes, so keep making them!!

@@ShervinShares after years of wearing a sports watch (Garmin and Suunto) I kinda feel a loyalty to my Suunto's since they've seen me through multiple ultra's. Plus I'm a data nerd and I love their stats :-) My biggest gripe with the AWU is the wrist temperature - rarely works, just sporadically and I have no idea what's going on. Kinda annoying on $1400 (AUD) watch!

You totally skipped over the fact that the AW Ultra doesn’t start your activities all the time when your starting an activity with the action button. If you’re going to point out faults with Garmin just make sure you’re being fair across the board.
