I really don't understand this "portless iphone" thing. If it goes portless and can only charge via MagSafe or wireless, isn't that *still* needing an extra different cable to charge? Like sure, maybe MagSafe might have USB-C on the other end, but Lightning already does. I thought the whole point was so that we could stop the "Can I borrow your charger/what phone do you have" argument. If Apple makes a portless iPhone, doesn't that just mean I have to carry around a magsafe cable instead of Lightning? That's not solving the problem.

Exactly what the point of that would be. Apple make a lot from licensing MFi. So people expect them to do this to hold onto that money for longer using loopholes in the law. Probably getting the idea from the fact Apple just said they will comply with the law and not “ we will put USB’s on the next iPhone “.

They call it iPhone 15 because it makes you turn 15 degrees and walk away...
Ever since the 80's with the Apple II line of computers they have been a high end "easy" to use lifestyle brand(they have marketed themselves that way from almost the start), as with the Apple II you put the disk in the drive, turned on the computer, and it loaded automatically, unlike someone like Commodore which had the Vic-20, and Commodore 64 which was less than 1/2 the price all in, with better basse specs, but you had to turn on the computer, then turn on the disk drive, put the disk in, type in the Basic commands you needed for the disc to load, then wait a long time for the program on the disk to load, and even longer if you only had a tape drive. In a lot of ways the same is true today, that no matter what product you are looking at from Apple there are always cheaper options to do mostly the same thing, and sometimes with a better end result, just not as shiny, and dumbed down for the masses to use. This is why I've not been an Apple user since the Apple IIGS days, and a few brief stints salvaging some of their hardware for resale over the years, as I don't like my stuff overpriced, and dumbed down, and I'll gladly pay less for Android phones/tablets, and other Google products, along with using free open source Linux for my desktops, and laptops, so I have freedom of choice.

@@xbrandon2252 Sorry for the late reply, but gotta love the KZread notification system that just told me someone liked my comment, but yes one of their long time slogans was "Think Different", but despite that, it was still a slick high end lifestyle brand with how much they charged for less compute power wrapped in a fancy appearance, I was born in 81, and I had both an Apple IIe with dual disk drives, and a Commodore 64(later C128) with dual 1541(later on dual 1571 disk drives) disk drives on my desk at home due to well off relatives gifting me stuff as they knew I was interested in computers from a very early age. I can say with confidence that minus the internal expansion ports, and ease of loading software, the Apple IIe was inferior to the Commodore 64 that was 1/2 the price, and don't get me started on the software, and accessories cost of Apple back then vs.Commodore computers. so yes they were a lifestyle brand then, just as they are today, because that's the way Jobs wanted it, slick, dumbed down for the masses, and with a high profit margins, despite Woz wanting the company to be more like Commodore that had the slogan "Computers for the Masses, not the classes", and in fact Woz holds that kind of engineers philosophy to this day, as he showed off his EDC bag a few years ago, and it's everything from Apple, to Google, to Microsoft, to stuff running Linux that he daily drives. So again I say for the 3rd time when looking at it in a more modern light, that when my unlocked $240 USD Nokia G50 running Android 13 can do most all the same things that a $1K+ iPhone 14 can, their cheapest current phone(iPhone SE 2022) starts at $430 USD, and they do things like charge $400 for a set of 4 wheels for one of their iMac Pro models, then Apple is indeed a highend lifestyle brand with slick shinny marketing.

I've wanted to and tried to be as exclusive a Samsung user as I can be since about 2006 when I worked at Circuit City and 2008 when I worked at Radio Shack... maybe not my whole life, but for the entirety of my oldest kid's life... even before then, I preferred Samsung over pretty much any other brand, but I've always preferred anything else over the walled garden of Apple...
I just bought a 14 pro max so I am not planning to upgrade for a while the only way I would upgrade at this point is if they add touch id in the power button like they did for the new iPad
9:16 Matt is 100% right. The reason Apple wants users to come to them is because once we have done that and invested in the ecosystem, it is very hard to leave. That is how Apple cultivates loyal customers who are going to buy more iPhones, Airpods, Macs, and iPads. Those users are also going to be relatively easy sells on the services like Music and TV+.
@junghan96

Yeah, I don't buy that it's not nefarious. They want to get people into the Apple ecosystem early so they get used to it, buy more Apple products because of the ecosystem and how well Apple products work together, so it gets increasingly harder to leave. They're investing (in non-iPhone products)... so they can hook people in and have more lifetime consumers who can't or won't leave

Anyone remember back when part of Apple's "mission statement" was to make products that were affordable?
@SIPEROTH
Жыл бұрын
Many start like that but change when they get big because the mission statement is usually making as much money as possible and not just be profitable. When you have no brand name no one will buy unless you are a good value but after you become a brand name you can sell expensive to loaded fools and fools that are so desperate to show off that they will sell a kidney. Apple could make a cheap iphone for 150 and sell it at 250 or 300 to masses but why do that when you can make an iphone for 250 and sell it at 1000+. To make a more premium product from a more cheap one is not that huge difference in expense but the pricing difference and profit margin difference is huge. Not only that but due to it's brands name and established position in the market it has a cult following that will buy the product no matter what. Selling cheaper is not something they are willing to risk because even if that makes a few millions of people start buying, first the profit margin from them is less big and more importantly at the same time it will make them not look like an expensive premium brand anymore and lose all those people that buy their product just to show off or simply because they buy what they see as the supposedly best. Those people buy with much more profit margin and losing a million of them is like losing 5-6 million of value for money buyers. So the sales of a cheap iphone have to really hit sky high to make up for it considering the current expensive iphone sells so well already. Brand buyers are also more loyal and sure to buy than value for money buyers that only look for the best they can get with their money and quickly jump ship when they see a better offer. Apple will have to get into price wars with others to keep those type of clients and losing profit margins more and more. While with the brand loyalist Apple doesn't have to do anything. It can even remove features and make them pay extra for chargers and cables and one and the other and they will still buy. Why risk certain high margin buyers for people that will constantly keep you on your toes and squeeze value out of you? Other brands that aren't huuuge like Apple in the market have nothing much to lose by offering a value priced product and entice customers. But Apple has loyal brand buyers that it wants to keep by keeping their brand look like premium and not for the poor.
hello Austin, Matt, and Kenzie, For me, the price is a big factor in getting me to switch to an iphone. however, I have owned both Iphone's and android devices in the past, currently using an s21 ultra 5g. What made me choose between them in the past is the deals that I am able to make with the phone dealer themselves. I can do what I intend to do on either operating system, so it comes down to the money either saved, or the easier availability due to carrier savings. At this point I would take a z fold, galaxy s 23 ultra, or Iphone 15 pro max big shlonger addition.
Imagine having to pack a giant mag safe cable whenever you travel

I love that Laguna Seca shirt. It took me too long to realise it wasn't just something like a Mario Bros. Boo
I'm honestly looking for an out of the iPhone market. I tried previously by buying a cheaper Android in the hopes of transferring everything over but I really struggled to do so, mostly with WhatsApp. As much as there are variables within iPhone models I'd like to freely be able to choose which brand of phone etc, with Andrioid capabilities, I'd go for next. I have an Andrioid tablet and honestly I much prefer it and I'm mad at myself for succumbing to peer pressure and buying an iPhone
When I bought the M1 Macbook Air that I am using ATM, it was the first laptop that I have had, since I broke my POS Toshiba Satellite. The hinge stuck while opening, and pulled it apart and cracked the screen. The difference is not only roughly 7-10 years, but the quality was lightyears different. It is worth spending more money to have something for longer, and I know this will last me much longer than the Toshiba that self destructed itself after 3 years
I currently have an iPhone 13, and likely, I'm just going to get a battery replacement this year. I actually really like the form factor of the phone, I hate thin phones and the 6.1" screen size is perfect for me, so that's never been an issue for me. The notch never actually affects quality of life of the phone for me, if anything it keeps me from doing accidental corner swipes. I don't care about the port switching to USB-C enough for it to be a big deal, either. So many people have lightning cables that it really doesn't matter, unlike something like MagSafe 3, which if it weren't for USB-C charging still being possible, would make finding a charger in a pinch really annoying. However, entirely portless would make it a definite no, but I think them doing that is unrealistic. 2020-2021 showed definite signs that Apple realized that having functional devices is more important than them being slim and overly minimalist, namely with the iPhone 12 and MacBook redesign.

As someone who the one apple products I've ever had were the nano gen 2, nano gen 4, and the ipad 2 that was only from my school, I would never switch to an iphone. My first computer I learned on was the blue mac thing. When I got a laptop, I got an acer netbook. Macs just doesn't work with a lot of the softwares I use like blender, revit, and steam. Plus, apple's ecosystem, while seamless, is EXTREMELY expensive compared to other ecosystems. Plus, you can't edit it at all
That's exactly what I commented on the last video it's already basically top-notch you can't have big crazy upgrades every year exactly
Hard disagree with Matt: Apple does care what people think - look at 2016-2020 garbage MacBooks and look at M1 MacBook Pro models with all the ports, high refresh screen, MagSafe - everything people wanted and asked Apple for. We shouldn’t push this narrative and make it ok to have portless phones, iPhone should be USB4/TB4 and then in the future updated to a then new version, with amazing transfer speeds, etc. We should push this narrative and make sure Apple hears us loud and clear. Also, what a bunch of nonsense about USB-C being outdated. They’re literally working on the next iteration that will do twice the speed, 80Gbps!, with the same connector. What more do you want? Just cause it allows those usb2 speeds (which is insane, true) doesn’t mean the port/connector is bad. USB-C is great and I want it everywhere, iPhones primarily ofc.
Sick Laguna Seca Shirt, Austin! Where would I get one?
Hmm I think they brought up an important part about proRes files being transferred… makes me think they might have the Pro phone use usb-c and have the standard phone portless? Makes sense right? Or am I wrong?
As someone who has upgraded from the 12 Pro Max, to the 13, 13 Pro Max and now the 14 Pro, the only way I upgrade now is if they give a substantial design change, and have at least 1 extremely useful exclusive feature to the device that won’t be accessed to their predecessors. If they changed the camera layout, I’d be ecstatic from that alone. I absolutely hate that they’ve stuck with this square camera module since the 11 and just needs to change for once and for all. They should continue to tweak the lockscreen widgets so they become more useful, same with the dynamic island. And as we all know, they care about the camera so much so in my head I think what can make their camera app feel new with life? Adding more photo AND video filters plus a more in depth editing suite in the app itself to entice the consumer to upgrade. I think that alone, could win over a lot of their audience to upgrade. Obviously keep the damn buttons and keep the port. Do not bump up prices of the pro models, make the base model of the iphone 15 $50-$100 cheaper.
I would want a host of developer options like on Android. It would work as the casual users won't know what it is, how to use them or care for them, but the enthusiasts would be tweaking the small things like animation speeds etc. and go crazy with them. Maybe not such niche features either. Features like silent timers (to set a timer of say 1 hr till the silent mode stays on) or actual 3rd party app stores would be a huge win in my eyes. Of course it's a very tough sell to Apple to actually implement them.
I use iPhone only because there is mini. Portless is a definite no-go. I am regularly of the power grip relying on powerbanks - with wireless I'd have to buy more/larger powerbanks as I'd lose 1/3-1/4 of the energy.
My car is 8 years old. My Phone is 5+ years old. I do have an apple iphone 8. I am lookin to upgrade but not in dire need to do it. I can wait to see what the iphone 15 has and weigh in between S23 and that. But if there is no port in 15, then thats it i'm switching.
That's next level. I'm on this train
I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and I would be fine with a USB-C charger. I hope they don’t make future iPhones all MagSafe. I like mounting my phone in my car with a magnetic mount and either a metal case or metal plate to keep my phone mounted in place. It blocks the MagSafe charging but I’m okay with using a cord. Also, I’ve used the MagSafe in my Tesla Model 3 and it heats up the back of my phone.
4:00 Physical button removal counterpoint How do you turn the damn thing on?
I don’t know about most people, but I was barely using my phone and very much using my iPad Pro before I got the iPhone 13 pro
Being a farmer apple products have been a major game changer in our work line simplifying and enhancing our marketing and accounting capabilities fully integrated in our workplace it just makes sense to us to use Apple as everything just works seamlessly and I can’t see any other platform working for us ever
I love using my Oneplus 5, getting old and need an upgrade due the heavy usage and battery basically on life support, apple is at the bottom of my list for many reasons such as: Limited software, battery life not that great for heavy loads (atleast in my experience), UI not to my liking and can't customize it at all! To make me buy one the price will have to be lower, and software needs to be much improved, I also have EXTREME hate for the iphone's design
Had iPhones since the 3gs continuously until the end of last year, (excluding about 2 hours with a Huawei) got the nothing phone 1 and haven't looked back.
To switch from Android, I would need multi-tasking on iOS. Even if its the way its done on iPad OS it will do for me honestly. USB C with at least 3.0 speeds and display out, maybe an iPad OS like layout when docked as I can't expect a Dex like experience on an iPhone to ever be a thing at all.

Only cars 2021 and newer support AndroidAuto and Apple CarPlay over bluetooth, and even then, it's only certain cars. The Mac mini isn’t a good deal. It only looks like one compared to a $1999 Mac Pro. 8GB of RAM and only 265GB of storage for $600 is crazy. They don’t have speakers, keyboard, display, trackpad, battery, and webcam in a much smaller chassis. It’s a $300 computer. I think Apple could sell them at that price and still make a decent profit especially with many more people buying them at that price.
Google Pixel 7 Similar specs for 1/3 price What can $1500 iphone do that $500 Pixel 7 doesn't? Google Pixel > Iphone
I want an iPhone 15 mini that’s thin, no wireless charging so no glass back which would be so light and durable and rounded edges so it doesn’t feel like I’m holding a super heavy cassette tape…..
Software!!!! More customisability! And smart Pixel-like features
I used iPod Touch in 2008. I can check the memo I made at that time, on my iPod Touch, on mac right now. iPhone and iPad too. If I need new phone, there's no other choice for me.
The competition is closing the gap, there are less reasons to get an iphone and those would be for the ecosystem, fluidity, or imessage and peer pressure to fit in Iphone should now continue existing for the sole purpose of brand competition and consumer options Ig things could be better for them if they added an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, reverse wl charging, astrophotography or splitsreen/free form windows and save the titanium build for later on until they oems can get nanoled to work on phones
I think Apple opening up the possibility of other apps being able to be installed from somewhere other than the App store and have that slight openness will maybe bring some people from Android over. Personally the thing that’s stopping me is the price and also that my 2nd Gen SE already does almost everything I want… I’m starting to want the camera upgrade but generally speaking I could happily continue with my current phone.
Tbh: literally nothing as far as we know today. Hear me out! I have an AW S7 and a 6 year old iPhone 7, this exact phone I’m holding is 6 years old this year, was bought back in 2017. It had a pretty rough life. It’s bent a littlebit, it randomly restarts (I guess bad contacts inside due to the bend). I need a new iPhone, and since Type-C is coming to the new iPhone it’s a no brainer for me. I buy it now and it will be good for 6 years as this phone in my hand.
With airdrop who uses lightning to transfer videos?!? Airdrop goes in wireless speeed bruuuuhs 😂

What would help me be interested in the iPhone 15 are: USB-C charging, Better battery, 48MP camera without pro raw. That’s about it. 8K cameras aren’t necessary. If it happens, cool. But I can’t imagine the storage it would take up
What would make me switch to an Iphone? - Nothing they will do any time soon.
Sounds like someone needs to ban inefficient charging technologies. Especially that magsafe battery pack Apple sells is ridiculous.
Probably will always be a samsung/android user but 3 things would make me consider it more. - usbc - make the dynamic island smaller or nonexistent - Apple Pencil mini.... sorry I'm a note fanboy lol.
For me, im too deep into the Android eco system to want to switch. Affordability, good specs for artwork, and a nice game Library. Is all it would take and I'm pretty sure Apple has ticked those boxes. Especially after Apple Arcade. Only thing left that might get me to switch. Would be Google really screwing up Android enough to harm my ability to use or enjoy their ecosystem.
Apple CarPlay wireless isn't implemented in most cars right now so if they go portless good luck using CarPlay. Despite what it seems, most cars don't have wireless CarPlay.
To buy: Apple starts supporting 3rd party repair, releases schematics so people can repair it, stops leaning on their suppliers so that they won't sell replacement chips, and stop putting chips on things like batteries that require them to reprogram for the phone to work. Seriously, it would take an act of Congress to allow me to consider an iphone. I've been using Android phones for years and it would take a lot to make me move... Oh, also they would need to make a Bluetooth file sharing mode that works with windows. I send photos via Bluetooth to my work PC all the time and can't imagine transferring pictures at work without it.
"What would make u buy a iPhone 15 ?" Money bro money 😂 iPhone 14 pro max costs HALF AS MUCH AS MY NEW 350CC BIKE 😂 So yeah i would need a REALLY good job really soon if i want the new iphone 😂
They should do a gaming version of the phone and have haptic triggers or something like that like the RedMagic 8 pro
Nice Laguna Seca shirt Evan
Get rid of the notch and make it more flexible
The iPhone 15 mini will mater for sure The reason there was no 14 mini is because nothing would have changed as apple opted to sell 14 series with 2 processor generations at the same time So an iPhone 13 mini and 14 mini would have both used the A15, same display, same cameras and so on That is why no iPhone 14 mini released Hence 15 mini will be an A16 or A17 depending on if they want a larger jump on the mini too buff the chance people upgrade there phone or if they choose to make it the norm that they sell 2 gens of processors at the same time moving forward
I think what keeps getting forgotten in all this ports vs. no ports is data transfer. I think Magsafe can theoretically transfer data, but they don't really utilize it, and even if they did, it would be slow. There are a lot of 3rd party products that rely on the data connection, and while, yes, they did put 30 pin connectors on products and later lightning, they still had data connections. Going no port means no more data connection except through wireless (bluetooth, wifi, maybe Magsafe?). That makes 3rd party products a lot more costly to produce to the point companies may write them off completely. Yes, Apple is so petty they would go full wireless as a middle finger to the EU, but it's not economically feasible for them to do so. Pissed off investors who start losing money have a way of forcing companies to do what they want.
If they're going portless is it possible to at least have a headphone jack?
Apple will never use usb-c, they will make the phone with no ports for the European market only. They will have to use wireless to charge their phones. Then say, "we would love to allow you to have faster charging, but the law doesn't allow us to sell them here. "
Maybe they’ll do a smaller MagSafe that attaches to the bottom of the phone where the port is right now
So what I really hope for is the pro could be more in excess like evolving the screen, camera memory/storage. Then have the regular iPhone instead give me more consumer friendly options: longer battery without the excess heat, more memory/storage, more durable and temperature friendly in hot and cold, water proof/durable, and make it a mini to actually fit in a pocket. As a consumer, I want a phone as strong as a Nokia prepaid and as much processing power as cortana from halo. 🤣 My camera is good enough, the size of the phone is good enough, the screen for the most part is good enough. We need to focus the pro and regular.
It would need to at least lose the ugly notch. Headphone jack needs to come back too but that won’t happen. In other words, I’ll be sticking with my 8 plus until I actually need a new phone.
You would have to pay me $100M USD to make me ruminate on purchasing an iPhone.
It would need a periscope camera for me to consider it
I think a thing people don’t understand is the general population doesn’t care about side loading apps they care if something works and can work for a long time. I am deep in the tech space and troubleshoot PC and stuff all the time, I don’t wanna do that on my personal time. I wanna use stuff that just works.
it needs to have a way better camera and maybe a different design
Haven't finished the video yet but first things first... For me to buy the new iPhone or any apple product really would require them to stop doing such predatory practices. They over charge, log far more data than most, they find any and all reasons to void warranty, and to top it all of they go out of their way to restrict user customization.
You guys have a podcast? This woulda made a great podcast
I grew up using Samsung phones. Been rocking with them before they were smart phones with the Alias and goated Alias 2
I barely started the video but : don't care if it's boring I'm getting this one to replace my 12 mini because it should have usb c and I have to give mine back this year
Austin shilling hard for Apple. Gotta keep them happy, lol
For the iPhone 15 (I would buy it either way) but I want better cameras, better battery and new colors
Desktop mode and emulation. These are insanely powerful little computers that are just blocked from being fully used in a simple hassle free way for silly reasons.
Speaking on what one grew up using: a friend’s son is about to go to college. He’s had an iPhone for some time, will be getting an Apple device for his studies. It probably won’t be a Mac. He is more inclined to go with an iPad Pro (w/keyboard and pencil) since, in his words, he knows how to use an iPhone so it’ll be the same. Personally, I have an iPhone 11. I love the style of the 12-14 and will more likely, soon, get a 14 instead of waiting for a 15. I can’t think of a feature to hold out for.
What would take me to buy one a open operating system
for me the one of the biggest reasons why i would never get anything from apple, is in fact their "ecosystem" bubble. what i mean is yeah iPhone and Apple watch might work great together, but try to take that apple watch to anything else than iDevice... Similarly say if you didn't like the newest Apple watch for some reason, you could go with WearOS or something else instead. but often those cant do half of the stuff they promise on the box, if you pair them with iPhone. so basically it is either 100% within Apple ecosystem, or prepare for the most stupidest little issues because Apple wont let those manufacturers to some features or something. similar limits are present on apple software as well, so no thanks on that front either.
I don’t commit we have all Mac computers and phones and a fire cube and a Google nest in the kitchen and they all work fine together!!! Just depends on how you treat them and set them up!
to get me to buy an iphone...pay me.
Basically nothing to get me to switch to apple products. I think Matt is 100% right in everything he said about how Apple will implement Magsafe and cause unwanted changes in many different brands and types of products.
I’d get an iPhone if they didn’t have a notch or pill, had USB-C, and brought back Touch ID. I have no reason to buy a new phone any time soon. I don’t need more processing power since I just use it as a phone or video consumption device.
i use a pixel 7 pro. I wirelessly charge. I have NEVER once connected anything in the USB-C port. Same with my previous pixel 6 Pro.On a phone that has wireless charging I dont see the need for a physical port. Just get rid of them.
In order to buy an iPhone: It has to be high end, currently all smarthphones (including Apple ones) are low end, ALL of them: no upgradable RAM (like a laptop, desktop or server), no upgradable storage UFS or nVME, no upgradable socketed CPU (yes, like a normal PC, server), dual SIM, headphone jack is a must, at least 1080p screen 120Hz refresh rate, of course a normal regular USB type C charger connector (not proprietary trash) and removable battery, almost forgot that. And I don't care about the dumb camera, only matters having one on the back and one frontal that make a decent job. If I want a good camera, I just get a good/professional digital camera that can attach lenses and popup SD cards.
i'm so tired of them cutting each other off instead of letting the other finish
