Oh right you are about the rules of etiquette on the trail Sunshine. You have the right of way going up because it's more difficult for you but I totally agree with your wanting to take a break yourself. How many times I've been hiking, stepping aside to give someone the right of way when they've said to me, oh please come through because I really need a break lol. Love you and Largo. Keep walking and keep talking! Nan❤

WOW, first comment! I understand what you’re saying about giving Captain freedom and he is certainly capable of doing this! What I do worry about is leaving you alone!!

Bravo Mama Sunshine!!!🌞💕 It is very refreshing listening to you speak proudly on your parenting style. It is how our young adults learn to become self confident and trustworthy. You are a very special parents, and they are very lucky to have you. Light and happiness to you all!

I’m sure Largo is much more capable than I doing travel in foreign countries. I agree totally with your parenting. Also want to say as children grow up they need to flex their muscles about such things so if you hold on to tight they will eventually rebel, the tighter the hold the more rebellion. Your children seem happy and mentally healthy. Great job, great humans!

So true about the rebellion. Still no rebellion for either as what would they rebel against?

"Caught with your Pants Down" title made me think you had wondered too close to one of the several Nudist Resorts in that area.......🤣😂👈....... I kinda figured that would be difficult to put on your blog ........... I got a good chuckle until you only got your diapers wet in the storm ....... Happy hiking .................... enjoy

So, when I hike the Appalachian Trail, someday, I’m going to carry baby wipes in a ziplock bag. Baby wipes are very effective at wiping off mud! And they work for cleaning sticky hands, as well! 🙂

Captain, my husband was a private pilot whose passion was flying skydivers (of which I was one). He is retired now but a lot of pilots will build hours flying jumpers prior to going to the airlines. At least it was that way.. I last jumped in 2004. The pilots were our heroes, I jumped out of Cessnas, King Airs, Otters, DC3, C130, helicopters, a Russian biplane and a jet. If we get to meetup we will have much to talk about. Sunshine, as a trail runner I prefer I have the uphill right of way so I am not breaking my rhythm, but I always feel free to take a break and defer to the downhillers. And everyone yields to horses. Cuz they're big. 😀🏃‍♀✈

The bald's were beautiful. In the mountains the weather can change quickly. It's great that you let your children learn independence, so many don't these days. Safe travels.

Sounds like the Camino, and honestly it's a day-to-day learning experience. There's stuff that some very experienced hikers do wrong on the Camino, and I'm sure the converse is true on the AT. It really should boil down to -- it's ours, not mine. -- There's another aspect though which is want versus need, though that cuts both ways -- on occasion, individual needs can be of great inconvenience to the wants of others. I think the trick is not be embarrassed, but instead ask about ; instead of just presuming on the basis of your own past experiences. Having said that, everyone can have a really bad hostel experience or attitude or unpleasant fluid output accident or simply be unintentionally obnoxious to someone else's character with ZERO intention to be so, so that it is very important to be as tolerant as possible, then just move on !!

I like the policy of getting out of my way if I am huffing and puffing, because I don’t want to lose my momentum. I can take my break when I’m done climbing the hill…. I, honestly, speed up on hills. I live in Pennsylvania, where we don’t have much in the way of flat land….

As a scout when I was young we went alone overnight hiking in our local woods from age 13ish. Know and trust your youth and the area, and that is perfectly fine (although not all 13 year olds are mature enough - and not all areas are safe enough , and that I also see)

Largo needs to keep less hunched over, or he might hurt himself, which means he either needs longer poles or a hiking staff -- but I'd say longer poles, as hiking staff is hard to learn. Maybe a pair of longer hiking sticks could do it ?

I love this stretch with big and little hump mt. I have hiked it a handful of times including an October hike where it was much colder than i liked but when i got to the top of big hump there was an absolutely perfect circle of heavy frost about 200 feet across. On another trip as we crossed the mountain a very nasty summer storm enveloped us complete with high winds, thunder and lightning and about 20 foot visibility. Glad to see yall had good weather crossing the balds. Thank you for sharing your journey!

At 10:30 you don't know what you're doing ? I do. You're walking, and you're talking *;o)* --- Person moving down giving space is absolutely correct. That person can lean on his sticks and make sure the one coming up is OK. He has the high ground (so the advantage), as Obi-Wan Kenobi might say !! There are obviously liminal situations and exceptions, but overall it's the proper rule. There are also the occasional instances where you think that you are in the right, except you're not. It's a learning process ...
