Dogura just had a roundtable stream with streamers who picked up SF6 to ask them how things are a year into the game, and some of the ones who never touched SFV wouldn't have tried SF6 if Modern wasn't an option. And they play Classic now. Anyway, peep Dogura's other video from the end of CR Cup where Mittii asks who the sexiest fighting game woman is (and the sequel video where Dogura and Kazunoko completely fail to find a fighting game man that suits Hinaano's taste in fictional characters)

Not only to SF but to the whole fg genre. Also there is the fact that SF is the most influential franchise in this genre, so the companies are surely paying close attention to everything that Capcom has done in SF6, that is different from SF5, that must have helped to take the game to such popularity heights... and are considering what can be replicated in their own game. So SF6's breakthrough will also help the rest of the genre in the next years. It created new perspectives for the genre. Another interesting implication to think about is that this breakthrough might convince Capcom to allow reviving another fg franchise as long as it's "SF6-coded"? So it becomes a project with higher chances of success with the general public and with player retention. Maybe a "MvC-like" game? Even if the Marvel franchise itself has to be replaced by another one.

I'll add my unimportant self to the pool. I always wanted to get into fighting games but the barrier to entry required more time than I was willing to put in. I couldn't even get a hadouken to come out every time I wanted, so forget about learning combos. My first attempts at fighting games were always just me jabbing twice or sweeping once, stuff like that. For everyone who says "well you're just a casual and you didn't want to put in the time," yeah, I am a casual. I wasn't trying to make fighting games my main hobby let alone my main genre of game and I had no interest in participating in tournaments. For me I want to jump in a game and be able to do what drew me to the game to begin with: combos and flashy things. I didn't find tutorial modes fun, I didn't find combo trials fun, I didn't find ranked matches where I either got perfected or both of us were exchanging 2 hit combos fun. SF6 and modern controls made me play the most and longest I've ever played any fighting game. I could deal relevant dmg while still choosing my moves, and naturally learn spacing, meter management, etc. Once I got basic knowledge I even experimented with classic controls since I've become comfortable with more things. All that would never have happened if modern controls didn't let me enjoy playing the game while learning it. Also world tour mode really really helped. I sunk a ton of time into that since those types of single player modes are something I love. SF6 really made me enjoy playing it and I hope SF7 and onwards continue the formula.

On the talk of modern, I myself still play modern and have a ton of fun. I don't understand how people are still saying modern "ruins" the game. Modern does little at high levels of play. So the only people complaining about modern at this point are the people who have maybe played 10 hours and dropped the game after saying "I'll learn the game on classic because I dont want to be a pussy" then gave up after losing a game against a modern player spamming the same special 10 times in a row.

Capcom managed to make a SF game with a n00b-friendly control scheme that’s viable for a lot of ranks but not OP. As a result more people are playing the game. If something is broken, make sure the devs know. If it isn’t broken, I don’t care about you preferring one or the other. Just play the game, have fun, respect each other, and be grateful SF6 is fun and new players are picking it up.

Foreal? I didn't know or I'd have picked up Blazblue. I picked up Sf6 specifically because of modern controls. Same with Tekken 8 though I don't use them in 8. To me it's seeing a boom in player base, not necessarily carried, by modern control users. Or people sticking with it. And why not other games? Marketing. Blazblue has never marketed simple controls and thus cannot widen their player base.

So it's the SF6's deep gameplay consistency? Or what else? Because the fact is that these viewership stats, combined with the known great sales performance and solid playerbase, already make it the most successful product in fg history. Just two years ago, as were still near the end of SF5's cycle, these viewership numbers and overall cultural impact, were completely unthinkable.

One game is a niche game in a niche community and the other one is, you know, the great grandfather of fighting games. Also I think the naming of the controls was a big factor. It's called stylish mode and the other is called "technical mode". Name differences like those can dissuade people from choosing it. Same for MvC3 with "Simple" controls. It just feel more demeaning than "Modern"

I don't think Modern controls was ever a problem, we had something like this in Blazblue and Xrd, I think the keypoint here is how they didn't shy away in keeping classic controls relevant for the game, so there is a proper balance in skill floor maintained that people who started modern can seek out to jump to Classic, and people who are veteran can still enjoy the way it was, of course, Modern being a well made version of "Stylish" modes that ASW did back in the day helps a lot. Despite Granblue doing every possible decision to simplify everything in the game it doesn't have the same effect.

Top level FG gameplay was already good the way it was, all that needs fixing is the new player experience. Modern seems to be a pretty good compromise, I hope companies keep improving the noob experience without oversimplifying competitive play.

As long as it doesn’t affect my play (my own inputs) I’m always fine with an easier control scheme. Or the DNF duel method where you can do both at will. One of my only gripes with modern is having to hold a button to get specific normals. Learn the game how you want, but if you know you’re dedicated to playing fighting games and want to learn multiple then classic is going to be your best bet eventually. My friends would never stick with one though so I’d definitely tell them to try modern. I am happy that they were able to implement modern without trying to change anything for the classic method. Thank you for saving modern controls. As we all know, Japan has long had a history of juxtaposition of the traditional and the modern. As Mario Perniola writes in the Cambridge University press published "The Japanese juxtaposition", we can look at the peculiar aspects of the Japanese process of modernization, which has its roots in a historical experience in which the notions of hybridity and crossing were unsuitable. In fact, what we see in Japan is not the encounter and mixture of different and heterogeneous aspects, although there is hardly anything original or pure in it. There is a sort of Japanese uniqueness, that cannot be found in a specific content, but in a general attitude that consists of a sort of deconstruction of any type of content. This process enables one thing to be put next to another without leading to conflict, even if originally the two may have been antithetical. Therefore, juxtaposition is the notion that best explains the type of procedure employed by the Japanese when they deal with something that does not come from their culture.

I love modern, been using it exclusively when i realised modern isnt easy mode it's just a different control scheme. Obviously its better on certain characters but its been good. I play Aki and Ed, but I also play tekken a lot so it helps me come back to SF easier.

Modern serves its purpose of easing in new players very well, it has definitely been a net positive inclusion. It does need some tweaks though. Doing specials and supers with the proper command should not negate the damage penalty, for example. There needs to be a clear incentive for players to move on to Classic. If Modern becomes the new standard that will suck.

That's a bad take imo. It shouldn't just be a gateway into classic, it should be its own standalone control scheme. Everyone should be able to play whichever control scheme they want without one being stronger than the other.

that doesnt make sense. the damage penalty is there precisely because of the ease of input. if they arent using the easy input, they shouldnt get the nerfed damage.

@@vincentcircharo8259 Then Modern shouldn't give the option to do moves with the proper command in the first place. It should be easy inputs only. It does so because it's a great way of helping people transition to Classic. Therefore, the damage 'bonus' should be exclusive to Classic, otherwise where is the incentive to switch? It doesn't make sense to give Modern the best of both worlds.

@@dnn86 like jiyuna already said, there is absolutely already incentive to switch. every character has certain moves that they literally cannot perform on modern controls, some losing more than others. for example, cammy cannot use crouching medium punch, its just not something she has access to with the control scheme, and its a pretty good tool for her. if you want to be able to play your character at its fullest potential, you have to play on classic, and therein lies the incentive to switch.

The only people complaining about modern were the scrubs. They felt it was “broken” because of auto combos and one hit specials/supers. But as we’ve seen, Classic is still the way to go at the highest levels. Modern did exactly what it was designed to do, raise the skill floor at the expense of the ceiling.

Honestly, the negativity towards mordern is a serious problem. Capcom gave classic players the world! Yet they keep on complaining. Street Fighter would be easier if everyone played modern, and we can focus on reactions and damaging custom combos like in DBFZ.

@@ANIMEILLUMINATI Sure but it is not as simple as, is good or bad answer depends to person who you are telling to and what they want to do right ? As I mentioned if I was told to use modern when I was starting out that would be flat wrong advice because I was hyped to learn fighting games and have competitive background to know difficulties I am facing. On other hand if I was someone who just wants to dabble in in maybe modern is good advice because it show people faster what fighting games are all about and spark that interest.

I think sometimes they see gatekeeping comments like the ones on this video dumping on modern, so they're afraid of being looked down on for using it. That's really all it is: gatekeeping. And when it prevents new players from sticking with the game, I guess it's working as intended.

You're placating. Modern is about sales retention, period. Gerber mode. I'm not mad at it, but let's call it what it is. My daughters love Modern. They're doing work. It's enjoyable for me to watch them play. If something makes something easy, why is calling it easy mode bad? Capcom knows what they're doing by calling it "Modern". I'm glad more people are playing. They spent their money so they can do/play whatever and however they want. I just wish there was a filter.
