Aphex Twin - Alberto Balsalm - hardware only cover/recreation
More RDJ fun, this time from 1995's 'I Care Because You Do'...
I've made use of @klm1784's MIDI file for the synth parts - full credit to them for picking this track apart and making the midi available to all
Lot of speculation about how this was created, and I've made a fist of it using very similar kit to the Xtal video I've already uploaded. R8 for some stock sounds and as a sample trigger, the S3000XL for samples, and the Nord for the polysynth part. The Nord is sequenced by a Roland MC-50, which is also supplying timecode to the R8.
Reverb is, this time, from a Quadraverb I found for cheap in the back of a local guitar shop.
Thanks for watching!

Apparently he used a wireless microphone inside the rusty ammo can, so it was possibly the sound of the lid being taken off. It has natural reverb (from inside the tin) that makes it sound like it was recorded in a tunnel or corridor. The "bubbly" speech was probably RDJ himself mumbling into the same microphone rather than sampling something off the telly (like he did with other tracks).

@@bleepsandboops it's something very haptic and real, that can't be fully recreated in a video. It's not just immediate feedback, which you can get (given low latencies) with software synthesizers and a midi keyboard. Much like playing a resonating string instrument. I've discovered my father (born in 55) likes the same things about working with synthesizers. In any case, it's a wonderful thing and I hope you'll keep sharing, modulating and guessing your way to certain sounds.
my fav aphex song, thank u
beautifully done
The beginning sound is a heavily bit-crushed, or, the more proper term is sample rate reduced sound. It’s almost impossible to tell what the original sound was to my ears because it’s so heavily bit crushed. But I’d say mess around with extremely low sample rate reduction or a bit crusher effect to get there.
