Apartment Hunting in Siem Reap Cambodia $250 Budget

Are you looking to relocate to Siem Reap, Cambodia? Join me on my own apartment hunting journey as an expat from the US! My budget as a single woman is $250. (Keep in mind you can find places right now for as low as $75, but if you want certain amenities it seems like $200-$250 is a great sweet spot right now for a one bedroom.
My personal must-have list is as follows:
1. Good light.
2. High security/gated community.
3. Everything included (except electric which is the norm)
4. Close to town (within 5-10 minute walk)
5. Clean and modern
6. Laundry
7. Furnished
In this video I find my new place in town! Let me know if you have any questions.
The company I used in this search is IPS or Independent Property Services. Here is their website:

    A tip, always flush a toilet check for sewer gas. Also, run sinks and showers check for pressure and the colour of water. It's klike buying a car does it start does it burn oil. Less of the it looks nice avoid mold.

    I'm going to be flying to Thailand in the next few weeks and Cambodia is definitely on my radar. The idea of living down the road from Ankor Wat lights me up so Siem Reap is one of the pins on my imaginary map. I like that they drive on the side of the road that I'm used to as well. I really was impressed by the apartments you showed us. Cambodia is striking me as being Thailand before the tourist thing. It supposedly gets really hot and it's very humid too. -- That a is a consideration for my retirement. Between there and the Philippines. Low costs and visa ease are my top 2 priorities. For me a furnished (small) frugal studio with ac hot water & a flush toilet are essential. Internet cell service and some TV & I'll be a "happy camper" mingling with some fat & sassy expats from all over the world solving all the problems with humanity !

    haha! You could EASILY find a studio here for around $150, no problem. If you're looking for frugal! I just saw a really nice studio the other day for $250 (that's top end for a studio, but it's located in Wat Bo). I never use AC so my electric bill is $20/month or so. As for a small studio with AC... I think you could run it and turn it off in intervals and still keep it around $40/month if you crank it. Best of wishes!!!

    I talk to my cousin maybe twice a week thru Facebook messenger. He's from Cambodia. I don't kno if u kno, but is it true if Cambodian ppl knows that if we're from the states, they'll charged us more for things? 🤔 I told my cousin that I'll try to fit in if I ever visit lol. But I prob won't 😂😭

  • @juliahaw

    @juliahaw

    Жыл бұрын

    It's OK if you don't completely "fit in." I'm literally an alien... hehe! But really... there is such thing as an "expat tax" or "visitor tax." You just have to feel it out -- have your cousin buy certain items for you, or go around with you at first, so that locals know they charge you the "local" price. I know when I'm being overcharged, and I haggle within reason. Haggling is a way of existence here. You know when to do it, and when to back off. Best of luck -- I say visit as SOON as you can. SR is looking GORGEOUS!!!!!!

    What's the deal/laws for foreigner on how to ride a motorcycle around Siem Reap?

  • @juliahaw

    @juliahaw

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm actually unsure. In my opinion I think it's pretty relaxed. Most of my expat friends have motorbikes. There is a law to wear a helmet, otherwise the cops are stationed around intersection/bridge areas and will fine you $5. I think you can rent one monthly too for around $60. As far as I know, all systems go! I myself ride a regular bicycle and this suits me fine for in town. For longer day trips around the countryside you can always rent a motorbike!

    It is, generally - but when renting, it can be as high as .25 cents/hour. This is very normal unfortunately. I think it helps cover the light costs for the entire building as well (exterior and such).

    @@juliahaw That is apparently the purpose behind the system's implementation. The government has been showing some signs of results recently, perhaps improving some pretty shocking trends toward human trafficking situation. For foreigners trying to understand what is involved in moving to or staying in Cambodia, the FPCS is a thing which isn't well understood and understanding about it isn't shared. Opacity... the lack of understanding on account of information not being available... doesn't help us have healthy relationships with landlords or have less negative judgements or reactions toward immigration when we are told that no, we actually can't renew our VISAs because we weren't registered in their system... misfortune, drama, suffering, antagonism, etc. Retirees don't really need to deal with the problem. English teachers often have their employers organize if for them. Everyone else? Trust the random agent. There's no conversation amongst expats, at least none available outside of social groups, and so it is something that really needs to be discussed. Those who don't need it don't talk about it, those who get by their own way only discuss it within their own personal context, and everyone else is left out... the list of things you should have known before moving to Cambodia but no one will tell you gets longer. It isn't great for becoming a pseudo realestate agent or marketing vlogger, but addressing this is being of legitimate service to those who want to consider the example you yourself are setting, Julie.

    Got love it, SE Asia. If that apartment was in Australia you would be viewing it with 40+ couples wanting it too, and you would have put in the highest offer. Which would be 4x as much then offer 5x to be in the running to get it. Oh the couple moving must show proof of both full-time employed for over a year, the simplicity of getting a place to live in SEAsia is so easy, with the furniture and appliances.

    Hi Stephen! Thank you for watching! It's so so similar in the US right now. The market has literally GONE OFF THE RAILS. There are actually HUGE companies buying real estate, taking over the market, so now families can hardly even afford to buy homes. It's really shitty honestly. The ease with which you can rent a place here makes it a great way of living -- I'm primarily an oil painter. While I adore NYC the rents have also just gotten out of control. I DO know, having stayed in Byron Bay, Oz for a year on and off that the rents were absolutely WILD... and WEEKLY -- why!? hahah So I hear you on all of this. Best wishes to you! Australia is one of the most wildly beautiful places I've ever been...
