Apache Sunrise Dance | Oak Flats | Apache Leap Story

The kids and I went to go spend time with our family for the first Apache Sunrise Dance of the year. The Sunrise Ceremony is a coming-of-age ceremony for young girls who will become young women. I also give a little backstory about Oak Flats and the fight to keep big mining companies off sacred Apache land as well as a story about Apache Leap in Superior, Arizona.

My late husband and I used to travel that road to Marence, Arizona. We used to haul equipment for a mining company own by my husband's niece's husband. We made these trips at least twice a week. Thank you for sharing the ceremony with us. I went to one in Whiteriver, Arizona.

I took my wife and kids in December to oak flat to show my family where we from. We live in Texas and drove all through traditional apache country. We found a sign by Gaan canyon that said no trespassing government property. So we ripped the sign down and went, it was the most beautiful beautiful view my eyes could see. We cried and listened to tradition music. On the way out we heard two giant thuds that sounded like a giant walking. It came from the canyon. You could feel the vibrations in our feet when we heard the steps. Me and my wife just looked at each other and knew that the spirits are still there and they are alive. We will go back and fight for oak flat and participate in saving our traditional lands from mining. WE WILL WIN!

@@whatwouldkittydo we will pray and pray hard that all the animals, and people there are safe and that the fire will burn out soon. Tonight we will sing and dance to send prayers and energy to the land for mercy from the fire. When things are good we sing and dance, when things are bad we sing and dance, tonight we will have oak flat and all the life there in our prayers.
