it's a shame Studio Gallop refuses to write a deuteragonist if they're a girl. Just like 5Ds, she gets shafted for a cool character in the second season that swarms the field with animals. I like Soulburner though, nothing against him, but what Vrains did to Aoi's character was awful, despite her having the most interesting story to tell. It was implied that she suffered from social anxiety and depression, yet used virtual reality to mask her identity and become someone more bubbly and appealing as a means of escapism. First watching Season 1, I thought this parallel was incredibly thought out, but they sabotage the character entirely.

Honestly? Vrains was done dirty in general, and Aoi is just one of many, many, things that shows how dirty this show was done. Aoi is one of my favorite YGO girls and I'll never stop being mad about how bad she was treated. I have a lot of affection for the Vrains characters, Yusaku actually being my favorite protagonist, but I admit that it should have been handled way better. It's one of the reasons I wanted a manga so bad, to see if Aoi and the story could be done better, but I have low hopes.

This all reminds me of that thing PlagueofGripes said in his Tien rant "You know they say you can feel the love for a character coming off the paper sometimes.[...] You know that shit about love coming off the page? Same thing is true about contempt or total indifference." Aoi gets treated so poorly, granted a lot of the characters do, but Aoi gets some of the worst of it. She's mostly neglected, and whenever the writers are "forced" to work with her, it's like they hate that they have to deal with her and are taking that frustration out on the character. In her first duel, techno-poisoned, brainwashed, pretty much mentally tortured, then left comatose to be a damsel for her brother & Playmaker. When she loses to Specter getting face planted with her full bodyweight behind it you'd think that'd kill her, like the writers wanted an excuse to never have to use her character again. It's not just a character going unfavoured, it's actively demeaning and humiliating- it's undignified. It's mean-spirited writing.

That moment between 7:06 and 7:20, when Aoi lost against Spectre. To me, as a girl duelist, that is brutal and appalling. I thought I should put that disclaimer out there. If they had just left it at that, it would have been a nice ending. Sure, it leaves a little bit of mystery surrounding the other ignis and all but that's fine since they play almost no part in season 1. It also means characters like Blue Angel and Go Onizuka don't feel completely shafted. They each fall into the classic Yu-Gi-Oh! roles of main girl and secondary rival/friend and it all feels very Yu-Gi-Oh! They both get their chances to shine, we learn a lot about them and their motives and their arcs feel complete by the end. Then season 2 came along and... well I think we know what that did to Aoi and Go.

Aoi Zaizen was one of my favorite VRAINS characters from the start. Her being reserved in the real world, but so giddy and popular as Blue Angel was what drew me into her initally. Then to see her play a burn deck with such adorable characters as the Trickstars just seemed to match with both sides of her character so well. She's bubbly and cute and outgoing in VRAINS, but in the real world feels so alone that it burns a cold fire inside her heart and mind. I feel like her duel against Spectre was extremely disappointing, but only because she completely stood a chance to win that duel. It wasn't one that had an underdog on either side, and both Spectre and Blue Angel played very well. The way she lost, though, is by far the worst part of that duel. With Blue Girl vs Soulburner, there was zero reason to lose. Aoi was a main protaganist that helped defeat Revolver. Soulburner had such a great respect for Playmaker and Onizuka, but that same respect was not shown towards Blue Angel/Blue Girl. Aoi 100% deserved to win that duel and get talked into joining Soulburner and Flame to aid them in their cause. She would have gotten her biggest win of the series, and still had a reason to fight alongside Playmaker again, even before Aqua came into the picture, and the change to Blue Maiden and playing a Cyberse deck alongside an Ignis would have felt more impactful and justified. But, as written, Aqua's connection with Aoi seemed extremely forced at the start, even if their relationship as a whole was great. Having her only win two Speed Duels in the entire series is incredibly cheap. We learned very early on that Speed Duels have less impact in the series than Master Duels, and are basically forced to correlate all of Aoi's duels with her being lesser than other (male) characters. The same thing can be said for Emma who lost (understandably) to Playmaker and Revolver, but then also loses to Blood Shepard and Roboppi, which are a low stake, plot irrelevant duel, and the opponent's literal first duel ever respectively? Emma's only win was against Brave Max, the joke character who was told in episode ONE that he wasn't a strong duelist. So, yeah, having one female failure take another female failure under her wing just for them to both continue being failures...great writing there, for sure! In conclusion, Aoi Zaizen and Emma Bessho both deserved better, ESPECIALLY knowing the real life (non-anime) potential that both of their decks had. Both Trickstar and Altergeist were top teir meta decks, yet neither Aoi nor Emma had a signifigant win with those decks, even with Ghost Girl using Infinite Impermanence, which was clearly established as a real life meta card that still sees consistent play today. I can't remember a character debuting a card that powerful in the anime when it's real world counterpart had already established itself in the meta game. VRAINS writers, do better.

What I think: I love her character and her character design, especially in VRAINS. What the writers should have do, is a revenge duel against specter (with Marincesses), where she wins and a graduation duel (as Blue Girl) against Ghost Girl, where you see how huch development she's gotten - Ghost Girl is another female character who had so much unused potential.

Aoi is such a tragic character, but I think her core issues come from a lack of payoff. Honestly I think the writing for Aoi was incredibly good in the first season, where not only did she have interesting themes going on in regards to how we identify ourselves within virtual space and how that relates to our real selves, but she also had this incredibly fun sort of tit-for-tat relationship with Yusaku. Remember early on, they really made a point that for every time that Yusaku had saved her, she made a turn in kind. He pushed her out of the way of Cracking Dragon > She saves him from fall damage in the fight against it. He saves her from a coma > She helps fight off the security so he can infiltrate SOL tech. Early on, they made it pretty clear that Aoi was a strong-willed girl trying to find herself, and that she didn't want to be indebted to anyone, a character trait which makes sense given one of her core motivations is to be useful to the brother who gave everything to provide for her after their parents died. Her first "big" win was against Vyra, and was a moment of rebellion for her. It was ironically the moment when Aoi started realizing that she was dueling for herself *Instead* of others, that helped her blow off the steam she'd been building up. By the time we hit Spectre, it's about time for her to find a new goal, since by this point she's managed to rekindle her estranged relationship with her brother, who is now more respecting of her choices and agency. Spectre *should* have been that goal. He challenges her ideals, mocking her beliefs, and to a very dark degree, calling out her messiah complex. Aoi at this point has accepted herself a bit more, but in learning about Playmaker's past, is acting like it's her job to get through to the people who have been traumatized by the Lost Incident. In a more competently written show, the show of her being humiliated by faceplanting into the concrete would have been a lowest point for her, and would have compelled her to improve, and to try to understand *why* she lost in the first place, allowing her to grow and understand how to address people like Spectre, who wallow in their trauma, and lash out against the world without trying to seek help. This is why the most awful thing that didn't happen in Vrains was the rematch of Aoi vs Spectre. This should have been the turning point, the moment that Aoi gets back at him for all he put her through, and the moment she shows us what she learned from her defeat. Ideally, she would have interacted more with Yusaku to try and understand the pain of the Lost incident, helping to kindle a friendship, and learning how to do the one thing she never really got down; "How to listen". But instead Season 2 happened and both Aoi and Go were thrown in the trash, forced to spin their wheels and re-tread their already completed arcs. All of this was basically done in service of hyping up Soulburner, a character who kind of steamrolls through all of the setup of the first season, and refuses to be interesting until his ceremony battle against Revolver. As an overarching issue, Vrains had this cancerous problem of never having any downtime, and more importantly, not having characters interact with each other. When we go into the Battle against Bohman, we have (Playmaker, Revolver, Soulburner, Spectre, and Blue Maiden) as our team. None of these characters interact throughout almost the entirety of the final arc. Hilariously, moreso than either Soulburner or Playmaker, Aoi has reason to be at odds with Hanoi, who infected her, put her in a coma, humiliated her, and nearly killed her brother as well. While it's made perfectly clear that Soulburner has a grudge against Revolver, that really doesn't actually make sense, given that Revolver should be, just as with playmaker, the one who is responsible for making the incident end. The man responsible for the Lost Incident is dead, and after some light cyber-terrorism, Revolver has basically become AI Batman. AOI however, was hurt recently and thoroughly by Revolver and his group, and has no reason to be indebted to him in any way. Spectre, who is RIGHT THERE, manipulated her and "killed" her TWICE, yet she barely speaks up about it, and Revolver, who is responsible for Spectre, as leader of the group, barely gets acknowledged by her. Like, beyond the fact that Season 2 feels like a bunch of writers who hadn't even seen season 1 trying to go off in every direction possible (Why no, we *didn't* in fact think that Bohman was legitimately Yusaku, Writers, thanks for trying), and the dropped character dynamics for Aoi and Go, and how the lack of inter-character conflict prevents growth of the group dynamic as a whole, Aoi suffered the most from this lack of understanding of her character, and lack of idea on how to push her ahead. Now because I've been rather negative here, I would like to follow-up on the last point you made about the calibur of Aoi's duels. Honestly, if there's any reason why I love Aoi Zaizen so much, and why I wish they had done her justice, it's because unironically she has some of the most interesting and nail-biting duels in the show. Aoi is ALWAYS playing from behind, whether it's from her opponent matchup to the deck itself. Outside of her introductory duel, she has to go toe to toe in a Burn Mirror match, then Vyra and Spectre run life-gain and anti-burn strategies, which puts her at severe disadvantage. Then Even when she's not focused on burn, her opponents always have highly specific anti-burn techs, like Soulburner having a card that specifically negates burn below like 300, because why? Or Bohman negating the first like 5 instances of burn, only to have a way to instantly reset it when Aoi goes beyond the limit and manages to outpace that rediculous amount of burn-prevention from a deck where she burns exactly for one turn. Against BOTH Bohman and Haru she plays under complete Elemental negation the entire duel, and the writers legitimately just keep adding random bullshit for her to have to deal with. Aoi legitimately fights tooth and nail for even her scarcest victories, but even in defeat, it feels like she's fought harder and more effectively than any of her contemporaries. My heart sinks every time she loses, not just because it's the expected result, but because she tries so hard, and plays so well. Her duels are a blast to watch, it's just a shame they let her down in almost every other area.

thanks, really great summary of everything, right at the end she dueled alongside her brother & was emotionally crushed in their defeat, she really should have came back from that, showing that even after experiencing the worst she's still able to pick herself back up & fight on, & they should have after that redeeming moment given her a final emotionaly intense duel with Robopi, where she again is clearly losing, but in the end has to win by putting down the tortured AI after Playmaker asks her to, then only after that withdraws & leaves her hopes with the others, instead she just gets beat down & stays down & her story just ends like that, it was soo frustrating to have that be the end, especially when the perfect moment was Right There & would have turned all 3 of the final duels in the series into a truly spectacular & perfect final arc involving each of the remaining Ignis partners in turn all with emotionally meaningful duels.

And I get it makes it more tense but it's another thing entirely when you look at all of Aoi's duels and realize she didn't have a single "easy" victory. Honestly I feel like many of the issues for a lot of characters in Vrains could've been helped by not only having more time in the series in general, but more specifically having more characters to facilitate stuff to do in the plot. When the only opponents you can take on are too important to the plot for them to lose unless the possible ramifications of said loss don't occur (both for the heroes and villains), or they're basically fodder that are kind of just there, you don't really get much chance to shine. It's either win all the time or you're knocked out for most of the season afterwards.

It's a consistent problem in all the yugioh series. Starting with Mai Valentine, they introduce her as a competent duelist and a recurring ally of the protagonists but then NEVER gets an on-screen win (not counting that one filler duel). Next series I really hope the the rival or main character is a competent duelist who's story doesn't revolve around having a crush on a guy.

I agree. Not only was there the theme of duality between the online world and the real world personas of her but she also had a sort of theme where it looked like she was growing up, blue angel looked youthful and as if she was using the online world to live her dreams which she was doing, blue girl had matured a bit and was prepared to take on strong opponents, blue maiden is then her fully matured character, she's learned alot throughout the show and is putting it to good use. What tended to happen to Aoi was a trope called 'gettig gstuffed into the fridge' or 'women in fridges', it's when a likeable character is beaten/killed in a gruesome way (and often left somehwere like the fridge for the hero to find) to emphasize how evil the villain is. It upsests people intentionally because it's a cruel thing happening to a character we like and unintentionally because it often shows people (women especially) with no agency getting brutalised, often being taken as an indication that women have no personal agency and must find a manly man to protect them. The intentionality of why it is upsetting (and watching Aoi faceplant was upsetting) makes it hard to say 'stop doing this', because it does partly achieve hat it aims to, making women look weak is a side effect. In the case of Aoi, it could also be said that she suffers from the Wharf {from start trek} effect, where we are told Wharf is strong, and so to show how strong the enemy is they beat up Wharf, but then this makes Wharf look weak because he's always getting beaten up. Things really fell flat most against Soulburner, Soulburner wasn't a sadisitc person like Spectre, so even if he had to win, a simple 'fall to your knees' would have been more appropriate for the loss to Soulburner. Honestly though, every character except for Yusaku, Soulburner and AI deserved better, but Aoi deserved more most of all.

Personally I'd write Aoi as a character of duality, like she starts as, confronting her 'demons' on the way. Don't quote me on this, but I think the loss against Bohman, which I honestly didn't see coming when I first watched it, was not something that ever broke her spirit: she put up a good fight, despite a overwhelming disadvantage. This was the type of moment that would warrant her 'transforming' into a new persona. A fitting end for her character would be to beat Spectre after such a hard loss, but it would be difficult to writ ethat into the story of S3. It's unfortunate, but I feel like the writers dropped their own interest in Aoi after S1, in favor of Soulburner and Ai in subsequent seasons,

Loved the video. I really like Aoi's character. She felt so relatable like a younger Mai. Juggling her family stress, trauma and masking it online is something that lots of young people do in this day and age. Looking back and reqatching the show... I think that 2 things bothered me. Her losing to Spectre when she had so much development up to that point, and how few duels she had in part 2. Honestly, I do like Marincesses, but kinda really didnt like that she ditched them in the last stretch. What was the point of her incorporating fusion summons, new trickstars and battle support, if she wasnt going to get payoff afterwards? They probably could have just added water attribute trickstars to complement the battle weakness they had to make the deck more well-rounded Mai always lost to main characters and villains. Aki was underused in the 2nd half. Yuzu started off really well, but arc V ended on a lackluster note... Aoi felt like a mix of Aki and Mai's issues writing-wise.

I will give them props for the designs of Blue Angel and Blue Maiden, cause appearance-wise they look really good (Can't say the same for Blue Girl, always looked kinda off to me). Aoi was always one of the most consistent characters in the show. For the entirety of season 1 to half of season 2, Aoi developed from a selfish, reserved girl dealing with negligence issues derived from her brother who'd use the Link VRAINS to become a version of herself that she wished could be in reality to a courageous and mature girl who's willing to stand up for herself and help others as well as gaining a more stable, healthy relationship with her brother. A favorite scene of mine is when Aoi chose to rescue a random research team who had no way of getting out, but uses her one time log out program to help. If this was Aoi from the start of the anime, she most likely would have left them and saved the log out program as her actions initially came from a place of selfishness like wanting to escape reality and getting the recognition of her brother, but she saw her faults and grew as a character. Imo, Aoi is one of the most well developed characters in VRAINS (although, I do agree that the Blue Maiden transformation was outta no where and unearned from a dueling perspective. Though I would argue from a character perspective it makes sense as it was building off Aoi's development of being more selfless and wanting to help a friend. Aoi also learned that the Ignis are living, breathing creatures who like any other species doesn't want to die at the time, so in a way, her transformation was also symbolizing her desire to help them too). The problem however is that none of those developments have any satisfying payoffs. Everytime Aoi gained any growth, it was a surefire sign that she'd be fodder in the upcoming duels: -We learn about Aoi's character; loses to Playmaker (although this loss was fine). -Has a new desire to help people after beating Baira and teams up with Playmaker; her very first duel afterwards she gets BODIED! -Realizes her faults in her character and wishes to get stronger so she can help more people; gets taken out by Soulburner to hype him up almost IMMEDIATELY! -Teams up with Aqua to not only help her but to save her childhood friend Miyu thus donning Blue Maiden; has a nearly insignificant victory against Haru and goes up against the MAIN ANTAGONIST of the arc! Obviously loses... -Has a great scene with Yusaku where we see how her entire journey has affected her up to this point and teams up with Akira in a Tag Duel against Ai; both loses him to but honestly, this was one of her LEAST offensive losses... What's bad about this is that Aoi becomes IRRELEVANT for the rest of the anime after this! Sure puts the "Didn't do anything" in the "No, I didn't do anything," well in her final dialogues. The problem is the anime constantly mistreated Aoi and used her as fodder in order to hype up other characters when there should have been moments where it feels like her development actually matters, but instead she falls into the same trap EVERY YU-GI-OH GIRL falls in! And for the cherry on top, like you said Dylan, they execute the aftermath of her losses in the most HUMILIATING ways, like jesus, you'd think someone on the writing team has it out for this girl from how BRUTAL some of these are! Aoi's one of my favorite characters in VRAINS. I related to her struggles a lot and overall thought she was a legitimately good character, but the anime continuously mistreats her character over, and over, and over, and over, and... OVER again! It's a shame because - like most elements in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS - she could have been the best Yu-Gi-Oh! girl we ever had! She's certainly one of the best in my book, but misses the mark unfortunately...

She never gave up, even when she knew she was going to lose, and even when she lost, she landed on her feet, it showed real progression, and felt like the next step was for her to take down a big villain... but.... that never happened. I honestly would have given her the fight against Roboppi, there can be a reason for it, because Roboppi beat Emma, so this could be Aoi fighting for her friend's honor, and she'd end the show off with a good win, but no... gotta give all the spotlight to Soulburner... and this is coming from a guy who LOVES Soulburner, but yeah... Aoi deserved better. Still one of my favourite yugioh girls though.

I will blow a gasket if it ever comes out that said "build-up" was intended for a Vrains 2 that the teasing at the end of the show was actually referring to.

I remember the Yuzu VS Yuri duel very differently from you so I want to see that video. Also I absolutely think you should make this into a series if wasted character potential. I know you have touched upon it a bit with your, "What happened to" series but I really like this format.

@@SuperMophie I always wince amusingly at people who complain about Sevens not resembling Yugioh, and then praise _this_ show, despite its own character type-blurring and lack of franchise staples like, you know, _bonds._ Arc-V is the worst Yugioh show, bar none, but Vrains to me is even worse at simply _being_ a Yugioh show.

@@snow-wing7965 Oh, there are good things to be sure. Like the video brought up, Aoi's actual character development was solid, just wholly maligned by the show around her. And Arc-V(a) would not be _nearly_ so infuriating if it hadn't started off so well as it did. If the first season was prevaricated on stupid crap like the pirates and the parasites and the Battle Beast and demon-gargoyle-Yuya and making a baby smile (?!?!), people would still write the show off as nonsense, but it at least wouldn't be so disappointingly _painful._ There's more I could name, plenty more to be sure; it just doesn't change the fact that they are _not_ good shows, shucking potential left and right, and will happily ditch elements that were what actually drew viewers in beyond the core audience in favor of messianizing the protag. I'll give Vrains this: its ending was an overall decent one, and IMMENSELY better than Arc-V's. Had the middle of the show balanced its characters better (and again, not seem to taken perverse delight in making Aoi suffer and her efforts amount to nothing), the ending would really feel like a grand, if tragic pay-off to what had come before, and I'd sing a very different tune.

I feel she should have at least been a part of the main group after she woke up from her coma where she would at least knew Playmaker's true identity rather than only finding out in the last 15-20 episodes of the show and nothing coming of it.

Completely agree with all your points! This is why many of us are hoping Romin in Sevens doesn't get this kind of treatment. Yes I know there are people that have issues with her going berserk and her taking a backseat in the excavation arc but I can assure you that she has been more involved in important plot moments with her being a spy for Roa (Rush duel arc) and helping Yuga summon his Maximum monster after beating Otis along with Gakuto and Rook (Maximum arc). I also like how she's gotten more mature as the series goes on. So she is far and away better than Anzu, Kotori and maybe Asuka.
