The Most RUSHED Yu-Gi-Oh Season EVER! (VRAINS Season 3)

Ойын-сауық

I discuss why I believe the final season of VRAINS was actually very underwhelming, and the 3 things that saved it from being viewed as an altogether really bad ending season. Remember, this is just my opinion! Hope you all enjoy!!

Pandor was so underused. I mean come on her name is literally tied with the myth that the Ignis draw their name from. Even though she has little screentime, I found the conversion between her and Ai about the future of AI to be really interesting. Her deck was also pretty cool and I like that the show gave a pure Dark Cyberse archetype before it ended.

It's funny, but duels in VRAINS only lasted 4-6 turns. But the duels were more entertaining because Links and Skills could change the duel at the last moment. However, having monsters and traps with many effects also causes plot armor for some characters.

There are many things that I just think weren't as fleshed out of the many failed potential of this show, which I can make a rant for each season, but two things I thought needed to take time to me was how Aoi's story of losing her brother and dealing with it is never shown, as a matter a fact we don't touch on it ever with how she gets to feel lonely about losing someone she couldn't protect, which I wanted to see more of her dueling in general. One big reason I think was rushed was the simulations that Ai saw, with how the world will be destroyed is believable but needed to be fleshed out more, like maybe in season 2 Bohman leaves the virtual world and comes to the real world to cause destruction and panic, which makes people find out about the lost incident and have initial resitance towards the new ai bodies, which when Ai finally makes his declaration to trying to end the world, it would be believable to why people to attack him as they don't want a repeat of Bohman. I have more things to talk about as there are many things I could rewrite how events played out as not just this season, but the entire show was rushed and with missed potential as the third season pretty much showed the problems the entire series had and wasn't really hiding it.

I honestly feel like (and please bear with me here for a moment) that vrains had the biggest potential out of all the yugioh shows. Yusaku's aftermath after season 3, his depression and coping witht he loss of Ai could have been one of the darkest and most mature things in the ygo universe(similar to jaden s4), revolver still had one lost incident child he hadn't managed to save in a sense, that being yusaku, aoi could have had her rematch with specter, there could have been a plotline with the lost incident 6th child, the knights of hannoi's spy, pandora..., dont even get me started on the soltech chess pieces and the kings, and the ygo required tournament arc that we could have gotten, the fact that revolver and yusaku should have 100 procent had a ceremonial duel (and I personally think this would be the first time the rival would win) and much much more. When you think more about it, the reason yusaku never lost (without it being of course p l o t armor) is that he was so psychologically scarred and terrified of loss that he forced himself to be the best, he could not allow himself to lose, he had to plan everything ahead and do everything he could to win. It wasnt a game, it wasnt certainly fun, it was a must for him to avoid the words that caused him so much pain in the past: "you lose". Thats why I think revolver would give his all to beat him in a duel to help him move forward like he did soulburner. (I also have a feeling revolver is the one that repaired Ai, as he still had his data from the first episode if you remember) To prove to him that a loss isnt the end. All of this could have been so good... Like imagine if the entire 4th season was like the soulburner revolver duel - filled with visual cues, deep plot and amazing execution. If you look at other ygo shows, most of them deal with their character plotlines in a way that leaves us at least satisfied (in most cases... looking at arc V), but vrains had so much potential to have the best final season out of any show so far and it sadly never happened. Each and every one of the characters could have had a meaningful conclusion duel or arc and altough I loved the last duel, i'm so sad we never got to see any of the possibilities it left open explored at all... (I honestly have thought of writing an aftermath story of season 4, as I have the entire plot and idea and ending in my head and i might try to write something in the future)

But yeah I don't care what show it is, if you kill off a character for the 3rd time, you've gone too far, at that point i just don't care anymore.

Once the Ignis war started, I thought that once Bohman, Lightning, and Windy were defeated season 3 would be Revolver and the other Knights of Hanoi invading SOL Technologies to get revenge for everything they had done. I thought the season would go something like this: Revolver vs Go (Dinowrestlers) Spectre vs Soulburner(no result/interrupted) Genome vs Blood Sheppard Vaira vs Ghost Girl Faust vs Soulburner Revolver vs Akira Blue Maiden vs Spectre rematch Revolver vs Playmaker Then the other events that happened in the real season 3 would happen afterwards. I've often thought of making this into a story/manga, but I'm not talented enough to draw it.

I very much doubt Queen had any bigger role in the series. Maybe more so if they had a longer season her role would have been extended, but even if Sol were going to be the bad guys, I think she'd be given a secondary role to whoever they decided the King was, and would probably die off in a similar manner. That's a common trope in popularized chess to sacrifice the queen, so no matter what she probably would have had a downfall. The loss of Spectre though, yeah that was a big missed opportunity. Go was a bit rushed, but I think he got a decent send-off.

And I think that's the main issue with Queen and SOL as a whole. Not that she was quickly dealt with after being portrayed as this big threat in the previous season, but that she was defeated and then SOL was just no longer a problem even tho it was established since the beginning that there were others like her. SOL was basically filler/side villains of the true villains in each season.

Ngl, not even the final duels saved season 3 for me. Yeah, Roboppi's death was sad but I didn't really care for the duel itself. The most interesting was probably Revolver vs Soulburner even though I'm a bit annoyed how 2 of 3 final duels were Soulburner's. (no I don't hate him but he got way too much attention compared to the other LI victims...) Arc-V did a lot of shit in the second half and I still dislike its ending more than the one from Vrains but overall, I think I enjoyed Arc-V more. I liked the characters better and the side characters got at least not killed off several times. I think Vrains really had one of the worst side character treatments of all Yugioh. The show felt like only Yusaku, Ryoken, Ai and Takeru mattered which makes me so annoyed since Vrains had actually some pretty interesting characters with potential which wasn't used at all...

  • @ivanbluecool

Honestly even season 2 was touch and go for me as well with how weak the casts bond was overall. Yusaku is basically if yusie never made friends aside 1 or 2 people who we don't see the backstory of until seasons later when it doesn't matter. That's yusaku. Heck the moment he got ai I knew immediately he would never lose as they made the stakes way too high early on saying suddenly every match was a death match but I did enjoy his last duel of season one against revolver as that was amazing. Season 2 blue maiden was honestly so boring as a whole as she always wins a useless fight and then gets handed to her the next duel she is in while go got worse as a whole being a less interesting crow who is selfish and stopped caring about the kids because of his ego. Season 3 don't get me started. The knights of honoi were brought up many times and we only see queen but even she is handled easily by AI and not knowing all the kids who dealt with the incident was already bad enough but the honoai were anti heroes at best season 1 and nothing interesting at worst season 3. Best parts of the show is flame burner revolver and yusaku. Everyone else was probably the weakest cast I've seen since zexal and Original in duel terms. Wish the last season was extended having two threats rather than just one who beats everyone into yusaku.

I agree about Yusaku and why I prefer Yusei over Yusaku. I discovered that I don't really like loner characters. Yusei was stoic, but he had friends he deeply cared about. He was always friendly and supportive. Yusaku tries to avoid friends as much as possible and doesn't show any care about people around him unless they're in danger. After his revenge plot was done, there was nothing interesting left about him.

@@nexusshark yeah especially since yusaku doesn't really care so much about the other kids who went through the same incident as him which would have been more interesting as they all have PTSD but half of them didn't matter in the story for any reason. Yusie looks rough but he is a kind person who is a genius making d wheels and has a kind heart since he is he only one who never goes evil currently and that's the third series of Yu-Gi-Oh showing a lot more work was put in for 5ds for the main than the other series. Plus he can be shy when it comes around Aki as Martha is just the MVP mother just saying to yusie to get his wife in front of her dad or she would kick his but. Yusie is basically Superman and Batman with the mom named MARTHA but it's done well as he always has justice in his heart Also honestly 5ds is the best series as we actually see the cast grow up and get jobs or move on from dueling and that gets me more than any other series as it feels like we grew up together and now must part ways and jack shows why he is best rival being his own protagonist and rival to two main protagonist in arc v too. Vrains just felt like a worse 5ds as the cast don't connect well all being on the internet

3:25 Technically speaking, as far as female antagonists go, you've got quite a few: Mai during S4 of DM; Alexis during S2 of GX, Carly & Misty during S2 of 5D's; Sherry briefly during S5 of 5D's; Rio once she embraces her inner Barian during the second half of S3 of Zexal (Barian Onslaught arc). Obviously if you're talking about permanent antagonists, or at the very least the final antagonists, then yes it's true we haven't had a female final boss. For those about to comment Yubel in S3 of GX, she's only depicted as a female in the dub (which ended at S3); in the original material (which includes S4) she's genderless and speaks androgynously, alternating between having a male and female voice. TL;DR There are plenty of female antagonists in the franchise, but they aren't permanent or consistent, nor are they the final boss of their respective series.

This is, how I would rewrite Go's plotline.First of all, instead of showing his downfall at flashbacks during Soulburner duel,I would show this at first couple of episodes. At the start of the season,Go is considered to be one of the three heroes who defeated Knights of Hanoi, although he clearly is troubled with his loss to Revolver and his death at the end of season 1.He tries not to show it,but he is upset. He is invited to a talk show,as one of the heroes. Before he goes there, his manager tells him that Playmaker is even more popular now, then he was before.Go says that it is obvious, since he is the one who defeated Knights at the first place, and manager tries to tell Go,that he also helped,to which Go replies that he was number two,and no one remembers those who came second. While going to talk show,he sees how people are obsessed with Playmaker. He is on a bilboards, people are selling his merchandise.People clearly love him.Same thing happens on a talk show. While Go tries to shift topic from a Playmaker,he is constantly interrupted.People love Playmaker and they want to know about Playmaker.Go was invited because of his earlier statement that he knew Playmaker's identity. We are not shown what happens next, but based on Go's reaction when he returns to his home, everything went badly. At his home he meets one of the major sponsor's representative. He says that because Go's popularity are now in decline, they decided to not sponsor him anymore.Go realises that soon other sponsors will do the same.At night he has a nightmares about Revolver killing him, about kids who are also dying that blame him for his weakness, and nightmare ends with a gigantic figure of Playmaker that crushes Go himself. What Go knew earlier about losing a sponsorhip comes true,as he receives multiple emails about this. His manager tries to support him, tells him not to worry. He just needs to win couple of tournaments, show off his power to people and everyone will love him again.People love struggling heroes.Go agrees with him and wents to see kids in the orphanage. And they support him, they still love and care about him, they call him a champion, but Go does not feel good after that.He feels unworthy of their love and support.Ideally I would also add a bit of a psychodelic scene, where all Playmaker images start to suffocate him.He has sort of a panic attack when he walks around and sees once more how people are obssesed with Playmaker. It all ends with his decision to leave everything behind. He goes to Sol Technology to be a bounty hunter. His duel with Souburner, his experimentation and duel with Earth play out the same way as before. The only thing I would add is his manager trying to contact him,and kids asking their teacher about Go,since he did not visit them for a long time. Then they see him during his final duel with Playmaker and everyone is shocked.Kids are afraid, and both manager and teacher cannot believe their eyes.Go loses to Playmaker, has his flashbacks and is taken to remove the chip. His season 3 storyline starts with flashback he had in his duel with Ai in season, but in real time.Kids, their teacher, his manager and even Akira, come to visit him and he realises, how he missed his friends. He thanks Akira for saving his life,as he recalls that it was Akira who tried to stop him from implanting the chip.He says that he now owes Akira for this. Now this is a bit of my rewriting of season 3 storyline, that will be important for what comes next.Main antagonists of season 3 are SOl Technologies and Ai with Roboppy.Ignises are still dead,Ai wants revenge against Sol technology, but he decides to use them for his goals. He offers an alliance to Queen, saying that he will provide her with all data about Ignis,Cyberse World etc...Both sides are clearly going to betray each other at some point. They decide to go after Akira to take a key with data from him.Ai and Queen realise that Playmaker,Ghost Girl,Knights of Hanoi and all important duelists from season 2 will definetly intervene,so they decide to gather them in one place and then eliminate them. For this purpose they stage Queen's death,as they knew that Akira will definetly call Playmaker, his sister,Emma and Blood Shepherd to protect him and Knights of Hanoi will never miss a chance to eliminate the last Ignis. When Akira calls everyone,Go is absent,as he is still in the hospital.Things then go the same way as they did in the season 3,Ai defeats everyone, including Akira,Aoi survives.Ai then betrays Queen, seemingly killing her.His plan is the same.He wants to die from Playmaker's hand and when Playmaker defeats him,the laugh is heard. It is Queen's laugh. She knew that Ai would betray her,so she had a backup. She takes all data from Ai killing him.She reveals her plan.Queen essentially has the same ideology as Lightning, she considers Ignis to be a next step in a human evolution. But unlike Lightning she does not want Ignis to rule people, she wants to fuse Ignis and people together and then rule them as supreme being. All people around the world start to transform to Ignis, except Go,Playmaker,Soublurner,Aoi and Revolver,Jin and Miyu. Some characters are revived including Ignises and Doctor Kogami.Go manages to escape from the hospital, when chaos is happening. He meets Earth.Earth though,is not okay.He is not brainwashed or evil,he can barely speak. He is practically brain dead, all he knows is how to duel.Go feels his responsibility, tells him that it is funny how they both now are just crippled verisons of their former selves. He defeats Earth, whose cards are scattered and Earth desperately tries to collect them before dying. He dissapears and Go sees tears in his eyes.Somewhere inside of him,his former self lived and now it can rest in peace. Just finished watching Vrains and I am really annoyed at it. It is my favorite Yugioh anime and it hurts how it was treated. I was okay with the lack of character development as I could fill in the gaps in my head, but I am super annoyed how they went back on the message for no reason. The entire show has been asking the question can humans coexist with Ai and after so long of Playmaker fighting against people who said it can’t be done, it is finally revealed that they can, and the only reason that it could not be the case was because of Lightnings personality. But then they go and overlook that fact and change it so then they actually can’t coexist, along with giving no reason why the simulations where different this time(unlike what they did with Lightning’s simulations). It seems like they changed the entire message of the show just so Playmaker would have to fight Ai. It would have been interesting if what actually happened was that humans could coexist but in ever simulation Yusaku dies(like in the other simulations) and so just like in what actually happened, Ai is fighting to save Yusaku’s life. This would have been an interesting way to get the characters to fight without having to jeopardize the core message on the show. I feel very strongly about the message of the show as I see the importance of it. In modern day, there is still so much inequality, and as Ai and advancing every more, there will be a time where the question is asked if humans and Ai could coexist. And if the world does not want to end for either party, it is important to acknowledge that they can coexist, because it is possible. The human race has done great evil but they have also done so much good, and have done the impossible. As Yusaku said in Season 2, “The impossible is just the possible that has yet to be done”. But with all the skeptics in the world and those filled with misanthropy, it is important now more than ever to not tell the wrong message. We don’t want to step too far into a world where we can not come back from. We don’t want to let the skeptics and the Vrains simulations come true. Sorry for the rant

Almost like Ed became the punching bag of the writers. Honestly, I completely forgot Aoi hit her face on the floor, but this humiliating and terrible last duel for Ed was really bad. The only thing he did on the season was lose to Manjoume. Terrible duel.

I do agree that season 3 was indeed quite rushed but I do have to say that the final season gave many things that personally saved it for me, most notably Revolver vs Soulburner and Playmaker vs AI (My second favourite duel of all time) and at the very least, with Revolver saying that Playmaker will return even stronger and A.I being to shown to *potentially* still be alive makes me happy that we got a hopeful cliffhanger than a depressing series ender (Arc-V). The final season of Vrains was indeed rushed but with the final 2 duels, the amazing opening imo and while still being a cliffhanger, made it seem quite hopeful, it made the final season much more enjoyable in comparison to Arc-V

For whatever reason they wanted to put out this Rush Duel concept faster than usual so they could achieve some (fictional) sense of either bringing freshness to their game or appeasing to a younger crowd prematurely. I didn’t even see any of this series and clearly they killed off people way, WAY too often for shock value.

I don't think they ever needed to touch on that more unless the spy was intended to set the events of a Sol Tech focused arc into motion. Like if the spy got discovered causing Sol Tech to take action against the Knights of Hanoi. Otherwise, if the spy was really good at their job, they wouldn't have gotten caught and it didn't necessarily need to be explored further.

tl;dr comment incoming So VRAINS’ two biggest writing issues were using the Barian Onslaught-style as a crutch (literally killed off almost all the side characters to build up the villain in all 3 seasons and then revived them) while simultaneously following the 5D’s invincible protag trope. Those 2 together undercut the emotion and impact of a lot of these death scenes while making the show feel more predictable and Yusaku more bland than I actually think he was. That said, while I recognize many of the criticisms here I just can’t be as negative as Dylan is here. I am virtually convinced that the studio did not know how few episodes Season 3 would have until more than halfway into the production of Season 2 given how much foreshadowing and set up for a Sol Tech arc there was well into Season 2. If this is the case, they were put in an impossible position and a lot of the decisions make sense. With the limited time, they chose to pay off the Ai and Yusaku storyline they had in mind since the beginning and wrote Sol Tech out of the story. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Pandor was cast for a more significant role in a Sol Tech arc that they were very close to actually doing. With the Ai and Yusaku story taking the focus, they wouldn’t really have time to contrive a bunch of other characters for the side characters to get wins against. With as sad and dark a tone as this season had, they probably also figured having the good guys rack up wins against fodder would undercut what they were going for. They do try to give the side characters their send off in what other ways they could through the epilogue. I’ll admit that not having Aoi duel Roboppi was an unforced error on their part regardless. I think there are other positives aside from the last 3 duels, Ai is an amazing antagonist throughout the season, the way he walks a line of covering his sadness and rage with humor is just so well done. I generally think the quality of the dueling action is pretty good throughout despite the problems with the results. The action in the Go vs. Ai duel is pretty insane, and I loved how the Ai vs. Aoi and Akira duel mirrored Yusaku’s duel against Akira perfectly. The dialogue is very strong throughout with a mixture of emotion and reflection that we just do not see in the other shows outside of very specific moments. Season 3 functionally works out to be a (very) condensed version of the Barian Onslaught arc with a twist in the last 3 duels. It definitely is rushed and has plenty of issues, but I wouldn’t put it anywhere near the catastrophe that was Arc-V’s ending. Arc-V had more episodes and failed spectacularly at executing the premise they had in mind from the beginning of the show while nuking every single character in the entire show IMO. You can’t really separate the last 3 duels of VRAINS S3 out from the rest of the season since the first half of the season is rushed precisely because they focused on trying to pay off what they saw as their key storylines with very limited time. At the end of the day it does make me mad about what could’ve been if there had been more episodes, but I sincerely think the call to cut it short came from the higher ups and screwed the studio over hard, it just would explain so much about what ended up happening. Frankly, if my speculation is anywhere near correct I give them kudos for what they were able to pull off with limited time and likely massive production constraints.

You hit so many points right on the head, but I think your best point was that Soulburner stole the spotlight from characters like Go and Aoi. Takeru was a fanboy of Go Onizuka, Blue Angel, and Playmaker. He looked up to them all as heroes of Link VRAINS, and the writers really threw that all away and pushed Go and Aoi aside for Takeru and his Ignis. I feel like Soulburner was too pampered of a duelist, especially when most of his duels were against more veteran characters. His wins against Go and Blue Girl could (and should) have ended in defeat, developing all three characters in the process, but VRAINS always had a bad habit of "good guy versus bad guy" dueling styles, building the story around the duels when the duels could have been built around the story. Aoi defeating Spectre could have led to Spectre being a bit more open minded of his situation, or hinted at what was otherwise a throw away reveal about a Honai spy at SOL Tech. How would Spectre know about Aoi and Akira so well? The spy at SOL, of course. But instead of a major victory for Blue Angel and personal plot point details, we get...that...instead. Go defeating Soulburner could have shown that he was stronger than he was roughly a season ago when he dueled Playmaker for the first time. Go could have then fused with Flame, causing Earth to seek out saving Flame alongside Soulburner. The duel ends in a draw, leaving Playmaker to handle Onizuka like usual, which either reunites Soulburner with Flame, or gives Salamangreat Mirage Stallio to Soulburner like how Earth was Crystal Heart for Blue Maiden and Aqua.Meanwhile, Soulburner does not have his Ignis against Blue Girl. Aoi gets her win, but is convinced by Takeru, her fan, that what he and Playmaker fight for is just, and she fights alongside them from that point on. Spectre later duels Earth and defeats his own Ignis, showing that he is still loyal to Revolver's cause, even if he is sympathetic towards the others. It is for the better of humanity to defeat the Ignis in his mind, after all this time. From there, Season 2 would play out more or less the same, but with a very concrete narrative of story first, duels second. Season 3, even if rushed, would not have been as bad as it was, because the entire season would have been plot and character focused. Maybe it's a HUGE "What If?" speculation on my part, but this show had so much potential that started to lose focus early in Season 2, and, ultimately, got thrown out in Season 3. I'm a huge fan of the show, characters, duels, and monsters in VRAINS, but that's just more reason to look back on what could have been and feel so hurt by what we ended up getting.
