Any skipper can do a mistake! How you deal with it defines you as a skipper - SwT 49

Any skipper can do a mistake!
It's how you deal with it that defines you as a skipper. I have seen a lot being here and it's not like I try to make fun of someone else mistake. It's meant as something to think about especially when arriving at a busy harbor, bay, or anchorage.
Things are not always as it appears and classic mistakes in eyeball navigation piloting are easily done. It has been a lot of catamarans hitting the reefs here. Why it appears like only catamarans hitting the reefs here might have an explanation but a wild guess is the most popular rental.
Sometimes it has been so predictable like I was just expecting it to happen and took my phone up to film it as an example. I would never dare to talk about this topic myself if it was not for the fact I have done lots of mistakes and hopefully learned from them myself. I have also been on the other side and assisted a three-digit number of boats taking in water after groundings and accidents. So would say I have some experience in what should be done and not. Just pretending nothing happened is not a good strategy or decision. This action and examples were too precise and good not to be shared even risking being mistaken for making fun of others. I'm a sailor and making fun of other sailors is bad karma. Using it as an example to learn from it is in my opinion different.
Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this video!

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm trying to sail solo around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

    I admit to doing something similar when younger - suffering too much from embarrassment and particularly in a full anchorage I just wanted to get the hell out of there. I did stop to check for damage round the corner - but realised later (and still kick myself) that I could have been on my way to a sinking in deeper water. Im older now, but still don't like an audience when Im getting it wrong :-). A good reason to avoid crowds!

    hey Thomas - on boat organisation, one of the best designs I have seen is an Estonian built Saare (fabulous boats) - they have one of the aft cabins actually set up as a wet room, tool room, engine access etc. You could easily do this on your boat. On my little Swan 38 my forepeak has two berths but normally I have those lifted out the way and its a working sail room with tool storage too. I’m also just in the process of re-rigging.. mast goes back next week. Hope yours goes well too!

    I guess I could convert one cabin to storage. One of the frustrating things about living on a boat is you hide things everywhere🤣 Good luck with your rigging project💪🏻 Cheers 🍻

    Looking at your vid, you are anchored pretty much at the same spot we were on Britican in January 2020. We were supposed to be there for two days to provision but then the big blow came, 8 days of 30-40 knots wind with gusts up to 60. In those eight days we were crossing off things to do faster than they could appear. Like you know it is normal that you cross one boat to do and an other one appears. If our paths cross, the first drink is on me.

    Surely when leaving the port or anchorage, green marks should be left to port? Was the video image reversed?

  • @SailingwithThomas

    @SailingwithThomas

    Hey thank you for watching and your question. This could be the rule where your home is. But in general the direction of the fairway is marked with the lateral colours in most maritime navigation maps as a guide of what’s the direction of the fairway. Some places the compass direction is the indicator for which side to pass buoys, channel markers or lateral lights. As an example the fjords in Norway always follows the same rule going in/out. However you might even see red/green switch side as you approach next set of channel markers when two main fairway meets. So in general I would say look at the map and see what’s the direction of the fairway where you go as it’s mostly indicated with two arrows red/green. This photo and video was not reversed. All the best and cheers 🍻

    Get yourself a windsurfing board. It will stop the boron and you can get around to places windsurfers would love to go and doing it environmentally. That way you can even enjoy days in lumpy anchorage's. You will never be bored again.
