Anxiety and blood sugar. The simple link between your mood and food that you MUST understand

Interested in resolving depression and anxiety naturally?
Check out Dr Janelle’s online course Real Relief Foundations. www.drjanelles....
Do you want to understand the link between anxiety and blood sugar levels? Want to know does sugar cause anxiety? Or perhaps you are experiencing anxiety after eating? Your mood and food are related to each other. Sugar is one of the foods to avoid for anxiety and depression. If you want to find out more about blood sugar and depression, blood sugar and fatigue, or blood sugar and panic attacks, then watch this video.
Another technical way to describe low blood sugar is reactive hypoglycemia. So if you want to learn about hypoglycemia and anxiety, hypoglycemia and depression or hypoglycemia and chromium, then this material will be right for you too. Dr Axe and Dr Berg speak about this topic a lot, and that's because blood sugar and mood, as well as anxiety and sugar are an important topics. You may want to also understand if there is a difference between hypoglycemia or anxiety, which is a great question.
Dr Janelle Sinclair, biochemist and natural medicine practitioner covers signs and symptoms of low blood sugar, chromium for blood sugar, as well as the best diet for anxiety relief, and the best food for anxiety and depression.

    Do you get hangry? Or are you aware that your anxiety (fatigue or depression) gets worse between meals? Are there particular foods that your body can't tolerate? For me its sugary food for breakfast (like crepes or french toast with maple syrup). I end up melancholic for the day, or having a small cry to my hubby. How does sugar affect you?

Switch to decaf or herbal tea if you want a warm comforting drink, but definitely reduce the caffeine. Also follow the dietary recommendations in this video on balancing your blood sugars

    I cut sugar and wheat. About 2-3 weeks in, I realised I felt amazing. I have never felt so calm and content in my life, and didn't even know the way I felt was possible. The low level of anxiety I had, and didn't really consider before because it felt 'normal', was just gone. Fasting always makes me feel great.

    I have generalised anxiety disorder and depression and there are 3 things that have helped me hugely in the past 20 years: 1. Taking my meds at the same time everyday 2. Weight training or some form of intense exercise every single day (seems to help release all that nervous tension) 3. Regular clean eating. I'm now removing processed food and sugars from my diet because I think that will help even more. This was a great video, thank you!

    Gluconeogenesis is how we make the glucose we need when blood sugar is low. Most of us don’t use this function while awake because we eat too much carb and sugars. Try dropping wheat, grains, sugar for a couple weeks and you will feel more even in mood and function. Increase fats and low carb veggies, nuts and seeds. My daughter learned that her poor moods, focus, anxiety were tied to gluten, not sugar. Life changing.

    Hi Dr Janelle Sinclair, I have a question. How do we differentiate the root cause of what is causing the anxiety/depression? I've watched allot of your videos and each one I can relate too. In December i started having GI issues ulcer pain is what my PCP told me it was of course his resolution was upping my dose of omeprazole. By this time I had already been on it for a year. I feel like ultimately this led to vitamin deficiency that ultimately made me anxious/depressed. Fast forward to today and i've lost 30 pounds as a result of the ulcer pain and me drastically changing my diet which includes cutting out all alcohol *sigh* and eating a very clean diet no carbs or any of the bad foods you described in your video. Two weeks ago they checked my blood sugar A1C and it shows that I am now prediabetic! And I'm just so confused as to how to get treatment because I feel like all of this is being caused from vitamin deficiency and my diabetic state is from the stress and anxious just sitting at home as i type this i have heart palpations/slight pains. Which I had as a child when i suffered from anxiety but i haven't had them since. Sprinkle a little Covid19 fear on top of it and it's basically a living hell. Is there any way I can get treatment from you remotely?

    James Michael I’m not sure if this but I started keto and did it for about two and half months. I was wanting to lose a few pounds and wasn’t doing so so I switched to whole 30. Which introduced carbs back into my diet. Carbs equals glucose. Today I woke up with the anxiety I had pre keto. I’m really starting to believe that glucose is the cause of my anxiety.

    I get panic attacks after hard physical exercise in the heat. Should I be eating highly glycemic sugars at this time? Should we be using sweets in an emergency? Or should we still be trying to eat something low glycemic? Thanks. This clip was amazing!

    I'd make sure that you eat low glycemic foods with protein and fat before you exercise. I'd also suggest that you trial an electrolyte with magnesium and potassium, as you loose electrolytes when you exercise and in the heat. Magnesium and potassium deficiencies can lead to anxiety. You need to check the electrolyte formula as most don't include these ingredients.

    @@DrJanelleSinclair I’ve read that people get anxiety when their blood sugar starts dropping. I’ve also read this on a diabetes blog - the moment the flip is switched and the blood sugar starts dropping, which would happen because of higher insulin causing the blood sugar to start dropping. Foods that stimulate a lot of insulin (insulinogenic foods) are the culprit it would seem. Fruit is not insulinogenic. If I remember correctly the most insulinogenic foods are dairy and meat. Grains too. I think the body gets anxious when the blood sugar starts tanking from high to low. Fruit does not super spike blood sugar. I find that when I do prolonged exercise, which I do regularly the best thing is an apple before for slow release glucose and fructose and if going for a while I will do fruit smoothies. If someone is craving sugar they are craving fruit but they don’t make the connection.

    Hi Mark! You can still have hypoglycemia (low blood sugars & hangriness) when you have type II diabetes. The supplements I recommend in the video for hypoglycemia are well known to help with type II diabetes too (Chromium and alpha lipoic acid). With regards to the sugar free energy drinks- what in particular are you asking about them? Are the sweeteners okay? Or are the energy drinks okay for mental health? J

  • @taliosnz

    @taliosnz

    Dr Janelle Sinclair probably both, I still get the energy kick (and occasionally will have one near midnight if I'm doing a late night dead-line photos pot) but then there's the crash AFTERWARDS which I don't imagine is good for anything, mental health or not - I'd say smoggy brain more than merely foggy brain here 🤔 You'd mentioned cutting down on sugars which is what lead my mind there, stevia being plant based is probably good/better, but does that overload or taurine etc do more damage (both anxiety etc and physical health).

  • @DrJanelleSinclair

    @DrJanelleSinclair

    Hi Mark. I would recommend staying away from artificial sugars, they can actually contribute to anxiety. You're right that stevia is a good one, as are xylitol and erythritol (sugar substitutes often used in the keto world). Taurine is actually a helpful amino acid for brain function, so I'm not too worried about that. I would be more concerned with the caffeine in the energy drinks. If you use it too often it can put stress on the adrenal glands- yes caffeine gives you a boost in the short-term, but in the long-term has a detrimental effect with regards to fatigue, mood and anxiety. Hope this information helps you. J

    Can I ask if protein and fats with meals will still help stabilise blood sugar if no cortisol is produced by the body (secondary hypoadrenalism)? My understanding was that cortisol is required to convert proteins and fats to glucose.

    Have you been treated for that? I'm not the expert on that, but I would suggest that the fat helps slow down carbohydrate absorption through the digestive tract, so I wouldn't be surprised if it does help balance blood sugars in this instance.
