It's fair that everyone's praising Bardem, as he's magnificent here. But the actor playing the counterman does a spectacular job as well. Underrated as he's just a foil, but a hell of a job nonetheless.

Chigurh's twisted logic is the best part about his character. The store owner simply married into his store, it was pure dumb luck. Dying would have been pure dumb luck, too. What ordinary person has a moral system this internally consistent, and this consistent with reality?

I would have guessed the opposite, as the movie doesn't quite read in that way; Bardem never lays out the stakes of the "wager" - in effect the outcome could have already been decided, regardless of the result of the flip. This is why Bardem says that the coin is, indeed, just a coin. Neither the coin nor the old man played any actual role beyond standing in for an infinite number of potential replacements. My opinion

Whereas Moss, Bell, and Wells all had experience with the military, in some way or another. In the context of the novel, Chigurh has no previous experience with war, and it's doubtful that he had ever been through any sort of training in the military-sense. No, his skills come from instinct and experience, and one could equally make an argument that he is an animal as much as he is the incarnation of Sin.

Most people argue that it's due to nihilism in the Coen brothers, I'm actually writing a paper on it as we speak, that's why I'm watching this lol. Nihilism is the philosophy that values and beliefs are ridiculous and unfounded, essentially that life is meaningless. Chigurh furthered this with his coin toss, chancing something usually thought of as the biggest thing a person has (his life), on something like a coin toss.

I think he's not quite as completely evil as he's made out to be, though. In the book he's actually nice to Carla Jean if you think about it. Yes, he does kill her, but you have to keep in mind that in HIS world, to deny the coin toss is to deny fate. So he was looking at it as there is no other way for her. He went through the trouble of making her understand before he killed her, and he didn't do it until she finally said she truly understood why he had to.
