ANTI MLM DECLARATION with ROBERT FITZPATRICK

Ойын-сауық

When I was still in "MLM" in 2021, I would never have believed you if had you told me that less than 2 years later, I'd be an antimlm activist and would be interviewing Robert Fitzpatrick (author of False Profits, Ponzinomics and Direct Selling a Nonfiction Fable) as part of my efforts to spread awareness about MLM cultic rackets.
I first saw Robert on LuLaRich and as I've mentioned in interviews, I couldn't hear him when he was speaking...it was like a brick wall came down in my mind and I had to rewind again and again in this monumental effort to try and hear him explain the phenomenon of MLM pyramid schemes.
Fast forward to today, I've had therapy, made new friends and continue to heal.
The language we use to describe the fraud that is MLM is extremely important. Cults use language to control members, and MLM is no different. In order to accurately describe what MLM is it's important to examine what it is not.
In this interview, Robert very clearly explains what MLM is and what it is not and why it's so important to use accurate language in speaking about these cultic rackets.

    This was amazing & Julie, you are a powerhouse in this movement. Do not doubt your ability to articulate the truth, not just your truth, but the truth. I came to antil mlm as a therapist with a client who had chronic trauma from this industry. Of all channels, yours, The Recovering Hunbot and The Bre Bares are now where i learn. Thank you. As for Mr. Fitzpatrick, i have read his book & it is a must.

    Hi Julie, I second FitzPatrick's final comments on your contributions and the contributions of the anti-MLM community. The grass-roots effort, which you are a part of, is the ONLY solution to the MLM problem, for reasons you discuss during the interview. I'd like to add to FitzPatrick's comments by noting that it's essential to mention that MLM recruiters are most often being deceived themselves. They would never knowingly hurt their friends and families by luring them into a trap.

    Yes! Thank you for doing this. More and more people are gaining a deeper understanding of the MLM phenomenon. There's a false belief that once we're out of MLM or even speaking out about it, that we are "free" from it. The misuse of language is a huge concern and one that's so obvious, it's a wonder how we all miss it...I was floored when I realized how I was speaking the same way I did in MLM. The language around MLM cultic rackets is already changing. Already, creators with significant followings are talking about MLM cults and they aren't even in the "antimlm space." As more and more MLM survivors wake up, they will have access to an even greater supply of content to self-educate, and there will be more survivors who choose to speak out...and more whistleblowers too. It will be fascinating to look back on how people's beliefs and language change in the "antimlm" space in the years to come. Thank you for your comment! :)

    This is an extremely important point. The FTC is responsible for initiating and maintaining the belief that there are some "good" MLMs out there. It wasn't the "Direct selling industry" it was the FTC. The FTC believes and maintains that MLM equals Direct selling. The FTC also did not have to accept the ruling in 1979. People who have been the head of the FTC have gone on to work for MLMs. Once people realize that it's not the public versus MLM but the the public versus MLM and the FTC things will get really interesting!

    I read a text that described that cults often place experience at an higher place than reason. A cult will say that their solution/teaching/”business” model can not be grasped through the use of reason, it can only be experienced. A cult would say that an expert like Robert Fitzpatrick do not have valid perspectives because he has not experienced anything only used his reason.

    Not only do people's brains shut down in the face of the deliberately-complicated compensation plan/stats/structures, they will artificially elevate their trust in the company because they need the opportunity to be real. I think people decide (consciously or sub-) that they don't actually need to try to understand these things when there is emotional manipulation in the mix. Which is the m.o. for most scams. You're probably about to say this, I'll keep watching, ha ha.

    You're right about this! I remember being told and in turn telling others I'd recruit, that the compensation plan would make sense as you went along...that there was no point in trying to understand because it wouldn't make sense. I was already part of the community, had been love bombed and also shamed when I asked my upline about the compensation plan. I remember her response was, "How long have you been a Market Partner now?" Insinuating that I should know by now. It's funny how specific encounters struck me at the time but I overlooked them!

    What do you say when Mlm recruiters say that any job is a pyramid scheme?

  • @JulieAndersonvideos

    @JulieAndersonvideos

    Ай бұрын

    I don't say anything when encountering this, because the MLM participant is deep in the cult. No logic will get through. It's one of many memorized thought-terminating clichés we memorize to "overcome objections." When an MLM participant says this, they really believe they've won the conversation. And because they're in a cult, they'll get really emotional and defensive if anyone explains why what they're saying doesn't make any sense. Inevitably they end up insulting you. It's brutal how predictable these interactions go. Unfortunately there's not a special way of countering a statement like "any job is a pyramid scheme" to get through to someone. Depending on your relationship with the person, most times it's best to end the conversation. Things will only escalate as the cult member will view you as against them, as being a hater, etc. If it's a friend or family member, the best approach is setting firm boundaries, letting them know you care about them. Because eventually, they're going to see through the scam and will need people in their lives they can go to.
