I watched three and a bit episodes, then I dropped out when the elves took the Numenoreans' jobs.

Perhaps if you stuck around for the remainder of that episode, you'd know that never actually happened. There was but one elf in Númenor - Galadriel, and she only ever rendered some assistance in training some young recruits, under Elendil's command. There was one guy who feared that if Númenor allied itself with the elves again, that the elves would "take their trades" but it never came to more than just one guy complaining. Of course I assume you've read The Fall of Númenor and that it was a very real fear that the men of Númenor had, they wished to become like the elves, but at the same time wanted nothing to do with them and had shunned their friendship, with only a few "faithful" such as Elendil still having allegiance to the elves of Erressëa. Galadriel was there to get aid herself, not to take jobs - she did train three young boys in sword fighting, and Elendil proclaimed that if anyone managed to strike a blow on her, they'd be promoted, one of the boys eventually did cut Galadriel and she congratulated him. There was no "elves took the Númenoreans' jobs" in that episode or any other.

@@John-Sierra Yes it didn't actually happen, it was a figure of speech. I dropped out when the Numenoreans expressed concern that the elves were going to take their jobs. I thought it was a ludicrous insertion of real-world American politics into the show, and it didn't even make sense within the world. Galadriel was a single elf and she wasn't even looking for a job, in fact she wanted to leave. And even if she did take a job, it would only be one job, and it wouldn't be a man's job in a sex-divided manual workforce. It felt like they were using Ar-Pharazôn as a thinly-veiled allegory for Donald Trump.

They'll take our jobs is a lot older than Trump. Older than America, in fact. Like I said, the anti-elf sentiment was very much of the books, just not in an allegorical sense, but Tolkien championed applicability, that you could apply his work and themes to any facet of life that you wished to.

@@John-Sierra Yeah the Numenoreans were anti-elf, but it was about immortality, not immigration. Whether it's Trump specifically or just immigration, it's the writers inserting their real-world politics into the show.

When ROP took Giladriel & made her a warrior which she was not. That my favorite character in Hallbrand was Sauron I never thought I'd root for him

I think you went into Rings of Power with the proper attitude: it's going to be Tolkien fan fiction so just roll with it. No reason to get bent over a TV show.

This. Right here. Is where I left it as well. I didn’t even finish the whole episode. As soon as I saw the Elf kids picking on & being bullies to Galadriel, I shut it off. That shit is a Very human child trait. Did Not make sense for first born elves to be portrayed in such a mundane Human way.

I’m with you with the Elves not looking like Elves, and especially I can’t get over old uncle Celebrimbor, mostly because I am, whisper it, a silvergifter. I like you loved Adar and am hugely disappointed they got rid of the actor (or he quit, it’s not clear) because he could sell any line of dialogue. If he’d been the one saying the sea is always right, we’d have believed him. I have read A LOT of fanfic, lots of it set in the Second Age, and all of it hews closer to canon (because it can afford to, no pesky rights issues) than RoP. So telling myself that it’s fanfic is not really helping me get over the fourth Silmaril, the one that left before they got famous. Also there is a lot of really, really, really good fanfic in the Silmarillion fandom, and I say this as somebody who worked professionally in publishing (and SF & F publishing at that) including as a published author. So comparing RoP with, for example, *These Gifts That You Have Given Me* is just a recipe for disappointment. I am a little reconciled with the new Elvish Charlie Vickers walking out of Shadow of Mordor to reassure the fans, so I will try to take it on its own terms going forward.

Didn’t have the hatred for it that others did. 1. Galadriel was insufferable, not the powerful experienced warrior I expected. She acted like my first lieutenant in Iraq before he got his leg blown off. 2. Thought the lady who played a female dwarf did an outstanding job. 3. The elves all had short hair? What is that all about. 4. The visuals were stunning, especially that of numenor

I think for the first, they're trying to give her an arc. she's definitely pretty hostile, hopefully with her ring of power and some wisdom from her mistakes we'll see her turn into the Galadriel we know, or one more familiar. Agreed on Disa - the dwarves in general were my favorite part of the show and she was definitely a highlight. The elves hair...yeah, I get what they're doing, I do wish they all had longer hair, even if they kept it up or whatever for battle. I really liked elrond, he may not have looked the part (at least not hairstyle wise) but he acted it well. I think the hairdressing can possibly be lumped in with my one big issue - the costumes - it may even be the same department, makeup and costumes and hair, you know? that whole bit needs to improve a lot.

@@John-Sierra IMHO Elrond is exactly the one elf that is allowed to have short hair and look not that elvish, because of his unique circumstances. But the other elves not so much. Anyway I appreciate you not getting into the flame war and I have to admit that seeing your beard I was afraid what you would say, and I was mightily relieved by this video. I apologize for stereotyping you. (Not fan of the show tbh, but Disa is the best and dark skinned elves are arguable as matching the canon and definitely not a problem anyway and people pour so much hate on them. So yea... I'm sorry I suspected you of being a racist sexist jerk only because of your fashion choices about the beard.)

@@John-Sierrain one of our Discord channels we observed that they gave her a lot of Feanorian character traits, including of course the whole pursuing with hatred and vengeance thing. Which might not be totally out there for a young Galadriel, might well be the reason they butted heads. I am just mad that they made Finrod pursue Sauron with hatred and vengeance. Finrod!

do you take in your Mithrellas story the different gestations lengths of elves and men into account? You should chose one of Tolkien many ideas on the topic, but still that should be some issue there - has she left him when she noticed both her children are born mortal?
