    Actually, running in Portugues is “correr” (I thought you might want to know), and the word “cosa” does not exist in Portugues. It means “thing” in Spanish, but I cannot imagine why they would have shouted it to cheer you on.

    Placebo's cover of Running Up That Hill is superb. Probably better than Ms Bush's original. I don't listen to music when I'm running though unless I'm on the treadmill and even then it's instrumentals, mostly. Kate Bush described the song as the inability between men & women to understand each other as we are men & women. If we were to truly trade places for a time, we'd all be very surprised and it would lead to a greater understanding. And the only way to truly switch roles would be to make a deal; but rather than deal with the Devil, why not God, as God is the more powerful between the two (Radio 1 interview w/ Richard Skinner 26/01/1992). I'm 5'5" myself, as are Meb & Shalane Flanagan (short runners unite!). Loved the cheekiness of this video btw.

    I lost about 170 lbs and then started running (a lot) just because I could and absolutely love it!!! (And the running channel) But it infuriates me to no end that my friends, family, and just people in general think I lost the weight running. Seriously?!?! All that hard work!! What short memories people have! OMG! Yes, running helps but by no means is it the weight loss magic pill! It’s the 100’s of everyday little things you do, what you eat, and regular exercise. Also, while I’m venting, No, I cannot “just run it off” when people offer me cookies, cake, or donuts. If I say no, I mean no!!! If I wanted a donut I’d eat the donut! What if I just really want a banana today?? That’s another thing, Why is everyone trying to feed me because I run???? Someone answer me that. Okay, rant over, I feel better. 😂

    I agree. When I started running I was about 25kg overweight, but I didn't start running as a way to loose weight, and I didn't really loose much weight in the first few months as I didn't adapt my diet initially. I then started eating a lot "cleaner" and have lost 12kg in 3 months. What I did notice is that my body has become really lean, especially my legs (even though I'm still more than 10kg overweight). So no, running doesn't make you loose weight, but it helps changing the way your body looks.

    Regarding protein: Recent studies have disproven the idea of an "anabolic window" (i.e. that taking protein within 30 minutes of exercise is more beneficial than taking it any other time). The research seems to suggest that it's just as effective, so long as it's the first thing you consume after exercising, whether that's 5 minutes, or 3 hours.

    For the question, “Are runners athletes?” let me share an experience that I had a few years ago. I have a low resting heart rate (it’s usually in the low 40’s) which I attribute to my active lifestyle that includes my love of running. There was a blood drive in town so I went to donate and while I was there the nurse went through the standard questions and tests with me that included checking my blood pressure and heart rate. When the nurse saw how low my heart rate was she asked me if I was an athlete and explained that they normally don’t accept donations from people with a resting heart rate below 50bpm. I laughed at the question and said no (after all I’ve never considered myself an athlete). The nurse then asked me how active I was so I listed off the things I had done during the week which included four runs since the Monday and it was only Friday. Without another word the nurse wrote in big letters on my paperwork, “ATHLETE.” It was the first time I have been labeled an athlete so I jokingly asked her if I could get a photocopy of the paper so I could hang it on my wall. It was a no go for the photocopy but I was able to donate blood and the memory of my experience still makes me smile. (By the way, I live in Ontario, Canada so maybe this athlete thing is a Canadian thing.)

    I'd love it if you guys did a deeper dive on the running/weight loss question including talking to some plus size runners to kind of destroy the idea that there is ONE type of "runner's body" and the idea that weight loss is the main goal of running. Like your answer about eating 20 doughnuts if you want them, if you want to run, run - it doesn't matter what your body looks like. If you're only running to lose weight, though, you're not going to enjoy it and you might be disappointed because not everyone does lose weight by running. Plus size runners show you can be fit and be a runner at any size.

  • @ladytalksalot4097

    @ladytalksalot4097

    I have to disagree with your last bit. "At any size." Really? There's only so many pluses you can add to your size before you absolutely *cannot* be a fit runner. XL or 2XL? Sure. 9XL? That's when running actually *will* destroy your knees (and probably other parts as well) because your body simply can't handle that much mass pitted against the high-impact nature of the sport. And I say this as a plus size woman with an obese mom. I'm on my way down, and running is fine for me, but if my mom wanted to try running, she'd destroy what little is left of her mobility in about two minutes.

    Running is indeed a noun. Test it by using a possessive apostrophe such as 'Anna's running has improved a lot this year'. Yep noun, but also it's both a present and past participle. Better in bed? Well isn't it all about stamina...? Running in Spanish is centred around the verb 'correr ', to run. When I compete in the Malaga half marathon I keep hearing 'ammo'. Took me ages to figure. It's actually 'vamos' which means come on, but Spanish pronounces the v as b, and b is easily missed, plus Spanish dialect frequently misses the final consonant, especially s.

    "Is running bad for your knees?" Does this not depend on your running style? I certainly think that running with a heel-strike is bad for your knees. Running with a midfoot-strike is definitely not. I have a question for you. I've been running in Vibrams since I decided to transition to midfoot striking last year. I had an AT injury which put me off running for a few months then started again in May. I can easily run 6k indoors (on hard tiles, barefoot), but I cannot run more than 3k outdoors (in my Vibrams on pavement and road) without getting calf injuries. I have decided to buy the Altra One V3 (Zero-drop, moderate cushioning). I'm hoping to receive them today. My question is: will the bit of cushioning solve my calf problems or should I rather revert to walk run intervals until my calves are stronger?

    Running Jacket advice? I have just started C25K, on week 2. Obviously the programme will go through Jan and Feb and I am getting pretty cold and wet so was thinking of asking for a running jacket for Christmas. Our budget is small. Under £30 would be ideal. There is lots out there but I don't know what to get that's good. I've been looking at Karrimor fleece hoody, XAED running jersey, Sundried winter hooded jacket, Asics women running jacket. They vary quite a bit on price and I can't always find reviews. Anyone have any suggestions?

    I’m sure The Running Channel have done a “what to wear in winter” video with Anna putting on dozens of tops although it may have been about “types” of runners. If you’ve got a Decathlon near you, they do cheap/good clothing and worth a look.

    Natasha’s Natter what @Narrowboat Longpod said - start with Decathlon if there’s one nearby. If you can extend it to £40 you might be able to pick up something in the December/January sales. Just make sure the hood fits well! Especially for those rainy days.

    Andy says that running improves his mental health, in my case it has the opposite effect. I have to run in the dark when I know there is no one around, as I suffer with scocial anxiety and find it impossible to run during daylight hours becuase people will see running, so my little Jogging sessions are done at 3 maybe 4 am to avoid people. Any advice on how to deal with that?

    Kyle Kranz, your pooping coach, says no. 1 after waking, then a 1.2 km out-and-back will probably guarantee a no. 2 movement and then the training run comes after. Before races, he wakes up early with the same routine, except a mile warm-up instead of a training run, will have pooped twice before a race and quite confident not to have an unscheduled: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3aOmpSAXbydlLw.html
