    Way back when Paul McCartney and the Beatles brought Ravi Shankar to the western world. We all thought he was the absolute master of the sitar. But more than that he brought the wisdom of India to America. So all of these years later there is Anoushka Shankar, much of her father in her but just a next generation Ravi. I don't think so. She carries the same inner-peace seen in her father, but more than that, a woman's beauty to the music. And I have to say too, her hands and touch are amazing, an absolute master of the instrument.

    From early childhood, i recall Indian music was like an enchantment in grace . I also found myself attracted to anything Indian when shown on TV . I now go to India regularly and i even work with an NGO as a teacher. I would quite happily live there if i could. Indians are so adorable and calming souls. This fact is reflected in this musical work.

    So they use their thumb to touch first the tip of the little finger then each of the 3 other areas on your fingers/hand are used as a kind of drum pad. So lets say you have a 13/8 timing you would start on the tip of the pinky and count to 13 until you make it to your forefinger tip at the 13th beat then back to the pinky tip. This helps to keep track of where you are in the overall rhythm. Hope that makes sense.

  • @vinayseth1114

    @vinayseth1114

    +Herrin Music Oh ok lol- I know exactly what you mean!- it's just a way of counting the 'taal' or the time signature- Ektaaal i.e. 12 beats, for instance, is counted this way that you described ( I learnt hindustani vocals for a while). Ya now I come to think about, it's funny how easy and intuitive it is to explain visually but sounds confusing using language! That's one thing I like about Indina classical- having oral roots, and relying primarily on melody rather than harmony, it's taught in a very hands-on approach!
