I had one similar back in the 70's when I was your grandsons age, mine made the same sound, I havent heard that sound since, great. Mine I recall started differently, you wound a clockwork mechansim up and held the button on top. I was frustrated with it as I was too young to make it work.

Thanks for commenting Sean, I am pleased with this one. Just what I was looking for, well a bit bigger would have been nice but hey it was cheap and it works 😊 They are still made and available on Amazon and other places I expect.

The last spinning top shown in this video is really cool since it makes a humming noise when spinning :)

I was looking for something and i came across this video and it was so at home and wholesome- man whoever’s grandpa you are your grandkids are lucky. You seem to be such a nice and entertaining person, and the fact you still have tops and make videos about it and aren’t too prideful or too cool, I like to imagine your grandkids watch your channel and are proud of you. Also the sounds some of them make are so cool (,: have a goodnight and take care!

That would be a matter of personal opinion and whatever your requirements are. I don't think it is a case of old vs new, it would be a case of what features it has and what it has been made from and how much you are willing to pay. I found this one in a charity shop because that is what I do. I guess you could search online. I just had a quick look on Amazon and they have plenty of them.

Hello Grandad. I wonder if you could alter the Prof Warbles top with the same cutout windows as the one that hums. NOT SUGGESTING you destroy the one you have. Just food for thought. There I go again putting in my 2 cents where it was not ask for. I think I may be hopeless. :-)

Hmm, a couple of issues there but still one of those ideas to go on the list. First I have already donated the Warbles one to another charity shop (I have taken to doing that to try to clear the decks a bit). The other issue, which is the more interesting one is just exactly how they work. Looking at this one I am pretty sure there are thin metal vanes or petals in the base. As the top spins fast air is drawn in through those vanes and expelled through gaps on the widest point of the top. I had always wondered how they work and studying this one is my first chance. As I write this I am testing my observations. If I place the bottom of the top in my mouth and blow that generates the tone so I am confident that is how it works. It would be interesting to try to make those vanes out of some very thin metal. I am not sure if a cola can would do the job but it sounds like an interesting project 😊

Hi Grandad. I don't want to go on about this like I am an expert. Older police cars and fire trucks in about the 40"s to early 60's had a siren that just spun up to a fast speed and emitted a loud scream. I am sure you can google one. They cut the air with the internal propeller spinning very fast. The outside ring had windows cut in it so the propeller cut the air being drawn through the slots making the high pitch scream. My kids had a top like the noisy one and it only had holes round holes in the same location as yours. It is not very loud, but did need to get up to speed to be heard. You can get the same noise blowing across an empty drink bottle like a fog horn. It has to be the same principle that flat piece of board on a string you spun over your head a few videos back. If you listen you get two notes at the same time to give it a harmonic tone.

Yes understand what you are saying but this one definitely has the metal reeds in the base that I am talking about. I can see them clearly and I can blow through a straw to direct the air to them and make them vibrate and make the tone. I went into the other room to make a video to show the detail and got sidetracked onto something completely different but I will get around to it eventually as I find it fascinating and I would like to see if I can make one like it or at least make the reeds make a noise 😊

It does do a tune when you spin it faster, if you don’t do it enough, it will stop. The first spinning top on this video was, the one i had from ebay yesterday like yours, it’s got t a yellow light on it and it laugh’s and plays a tune, i got it from ebay, but the company is from is beanstalk, and it has lights and sounds, when you press the handle to make it go, also without you pressing the handle, there’s a button you press to make the sound go, and it laugh’s, if you hold it down it does a tune and also laugh’s, i don’t no what tune it is, but you could say it’s a random tune for all i know
