Jim's surgically repaired and reconstructed shoulder left him able to play, but what's remarkable to me is that his arm strength was never the same as before the shoulder surgery, so to still be able to play quarterback effectively in the NFL after losing that arm strength is a real credit to Jim's toughness, competitiveness, and intelligence.

@@paulkeilman3510 Well said. His arm strength was never the same after Martin slammed him. One of the things that irritates me is the revisionist narrative that, before his shoulder was pulverized by Martin, Jim McMahon didn't have a strong arm, which is totally ridiculous. Not only did he have a strong arm, but I've never seen a right-handed quarterback better at throwing while sprinting left, period. Montana was particularly great at throwing while sprinting right, but nobody threw better while running to his left. That 3rd TD in the 85 MIN game, and then TD pass to Gault in the NFCCG are good examples. In the former, he threw the ball over 50 yards while sprinting left and hit McKinnon in stride, while in the latter he three a frozen rope to Gault. He had fantastic arm strength, but he also had a good touch on the ball, so he didn't need to throw it real hard all the time. After Martin destroyed his shoulder, Jim had to use pure guts n guile because he just didn't have the arm strength anymore. I was always very impressed with how he hung in there in that 87 playoff game vs WASH. On the scoring pass to Morris to put 'em up 14-0, the hung in against a blitz until Morris cleared and took a crushing shot [perfectly legal] to his throwing shoulder. He just couldn't get anything in the ball after that, but what impressed me the most was that after the game he didn't blame anything on the injury. He just said that he didn't play well and that he deserved the heat.

@@paulkeilman3510 There's a really interesting story behind that whole thing with his shoulder in 86 . . . he hurt it in wk1 vs CLE, and kept trying to play through it. He should've shut it down right then and gotten surgery, but he was a competitor and wanted to keep playing. If he got the surgery right then, he would've been able to come back late in the season, like the last 3 or 4 weeks, because it wouldn't have been complete reconstructive shoulder surgery, as it was when Martin finally obliterated the whole shoulder . . . but Jim's shoulder was already in bad shape by the time Martin slammed him. Jim knew there was something seriously wrong with it after game one. As that season went on, he kept telling the team, but they weren't listening. At one point, Ditka told Jim to his face that he thought Jim was faking it. That's incredible, but 100% true.

I love your content. I went overseas with the military in 85 and didn’t return till 2001. I only read about these games. As a lifelong Bears fan I missed some of their greatest years. So being able to see these highlights in fantastic. Thanks!
