The Bears winning 13 games with Jim Miller and Shane Matthews and then 13 more in 2006 with Rex Grossman deserves a 30 for 30.

The Bears defense in the early to mid 2000s was absolutely stacked with talent, and were maybe the best in the league during that decade at getting takeaways. If they just had a SERVICEABLE quarterback, they didn’t need an All-Pro quarterback with a defense like that, but someone like a Chad Pennington or Jake Delhomme, who could make a few throws and not turn the ball over, then Chicago very well may have won a ring or two. They got to a Super Bowl with REX GROSSMAN, so what does that tell you?

2001 Bears is one of the most random good teams I ever seen. So in 2001 the Bears went 13-3 and had a first round bye in the playoffs. They had the number 1 defense. However, this season was bookended by being 5-11 in 2000 (with the 20th ranked defense) and 4-12 in 2002 (with the 25th ranked defense).

The 2001 and 2005 Bears both had the best scoring defense in the league. They gave up a total of 203 points in ‘01 and 202 points in ‘05. The 2001 version relied on the best run defense in the league but the 2005 defense was most efficient at stopping the pass making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. Chicago surrendered 10 touchdowns threw the air and picked off 24 passes in 2005. They were extremely stingy when it counted most (except in the playoffs) both years. In 2005 the Bears gave up a league low 13 red zone touchdowns on 40 opportunities while they allowed only 15 such touchdowns on a league low 34 chances in 2001. Both defenses were murder on 4th down as they allowed just four successful 4th down attempts in 17 tries in ‘01 and then gave up six 4th down conversions in 20 attempts in ‘05. Both teams earned a first round bye as the second seed in the NFC. If you ignore the final game of the 2005 season in which Chicago rested it’s starters then both teams went on to give up more points in a divisional round defeat than they had during the entire regular season. Both teams had bad quarterbacks, obviously.

The 2005 bears defense was good but got exposed in the playoffs. Couldn't get a decent pass rush going, and nobody with the speed or capability to stop Steve Smith. 2001 team was fun to watch, but I've always felt like they overachieved that year. They won a couple games that they probably shouldn't have, and if I remember correctly they lost both games against the packers that season. The eagles were just a much more complete team than they were. And yes, with better quarterback play and coaching, obviously

Oh, yeah. That game against the Chicago Bears. In Week 8 with 32 seconds left in the Fourth Quarter, the Browns were leading 21-to-7 when Shane Matthews delivered this pass to Marty Booker in the endzone, followed by a Paul Edringer extra point to bring Da Bears within a score. Then, the Bears recover the onside kick, then with no time left, Matthews delivers this HUGE pass to James Allen for the touchdown, and another Edringer kick sends this game into overtime. In OT, well...I'll let this image speak for itself. The Browns went from a potential 5-2 record and a possible playoff spot to only winning three more games during the rest of the season afterwards.

This collapse directly led to Bottlegate a month later. If the Browns had won this game, they wouldn't have needed that one to get into the playoffs. And the situation of the fans feeling that the refs just screwed them out of the playoffs turned the scene extremely ugly. But it wouldn't have happened had the Browns taken care of business here.

Between this finish, Dwayne Rudd ripping off his helmet and costing the Browns a win against the Chiefs, and the events that led up to Bottlegate (basically the refs breaking the NFL's rules on instant replay to take away the Browns last chance to win against the Jaguars) the 2001 Browns just seemed like a cursed team.
