Another look at Billy Mitchell and the Music City Con

Last October, Billy Mitchell did something very, very stupid. So, of course, we’re here to discuss it.
While embroiling himself in losing lawsuits, Billy went to the Music City Multi-Con in Lebanon, Tennessee, to do what he intended to be a public performance of a perfect score on Pac-Man (on the game’s “jumper” revision). He failed in his attempt, coming 5,090 points short. Which is okay. There are few people so good at Pac-Man that they can just pound out a perfect score on demand, and it’s okay if Billy isn’t one of them. But what isn’t okay is that Billy lied to the crowd, and to the media, and claimed that it was indeed a successful perfect score after all. The crowd trusted the event’s special guest, since he was being presented as an authority on the subject, and thus it was reported (albeit briefly) that Billy had graced this Tennessee event with a perfect score on Pac-Man.
Unfortunately for Billy, this isn’t the 1980s anymore, and people can actually record and document Billy’s lies. While some poor, lost souls have attempted to run interference for Billy on this matter, the evidence is clear as day. Today, we’re treating you to an entire hour-long video going over all the evidence on Billy Mitchell’s “Music City Con”, as well as his whole so-called “Road to Redemption” leading up to it.
The material about Music City Multi-Con in particular starts at 30:14.

Some time after this video was published, Billy acknowledged his faux pas at the Multi-Con... soooort of? It's predictably very oblique, but I think we can assume this is a reference to the Music City Con. Here are his actual words at about the 86 minute mark with Barstool Sports' Pardon My Take: "Recently, I was at a convention. I thought 'Yay, I did it!' And then I realized, 'Oh wait, I came up short. Dammit!' And so, next time, how do I keep that from happening, or missing the mark, or misunderstanding, or... So every time I do something, I'm reflecting back as to what it is I can do different to avoid the mishap. That's the way... People say, 'How did you get good at this game?' When you play a game, when you die, you say 'Aw, dammit!' I say 'What happened?' I go back X amount of steps, *sound* right there. So it's... in some ways, it's a gift, in some ways it's a curse." kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6yAw7GYh6uyXdI.html lololololol Of course he wraps it inside a story about how much more dedicated he is than everyone. (That must be why he cheated at Donkey Kong when everyone else was patiently grinding out honest scores.) Also, if you just listened to him, you'd think his "mistake" was simply making a bad jump in Mario rather than playing a multi-hour game to completion and publicly misrepresenting the final score. Obviously, if this is a refence to Music City, there are a few problems with this illustration of him innocently thinking he "did it" before later realizing he "came up short". First, when did this realization happen? Five minutes later? The next day? The following year? Billy doesn't say, because he is a liar, and he knows to keep his story open as long as possible. He's only acknowledging it here at all because otherwise he knows it could look like he's avoiding it, the way he avoids that old MTV interview which he still has absolutely no answer for: donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2481.0 And there are a few more problems with this handwave by Billy. In my video, I acknowledged that I couldn't strictly prove that Billy wasn't playing on five lives for his final game, despite his playing six lives on every other documented perfect score attempt, including one earlier that night. That said, the chances of him playing that game on six lives are still like 99.99%, and in that case, that missing life was staring Billy in the face his entire game. He wants you to think he notices every little oddity, every squeaky fence (and maybe he does), but he somehow just didn't notice when he lost his first guy, and just didn't notice the aberrant display along the bottom, despite his Pac-Man passing right by it about 200 times on the way to the split screen? Also, we don't know exactly when Billy signed those "first" game marquees, but let's assume for the sake of argument that it was before his convenient realization. (In other words, even though Billy clearly knew he was passing off a failed attempt as a successful one as he was doing it, let's assume he was still intent on maintaining the lie while he signed those marquees, and then made the choice to disavow the con some time later.) Even so, doesn't it seem odd that Billy would realize his error and yet still leave his pals at Broken Token high and dry, such that they would still be repeating the lie months later? Some friend! Gosh, if I didn't know any better, I'd say Billy actually enjoys people giving him accolades he knows he didn't earn. There's a good chance the Music City Con becomes relevant in the ongoing legal battles, both in Billy's lawsuit against TG, where he will no doubt continue to wave his friends' witness statements around, and in TG's counter-suit, where Billy's and Walter Day's misrepresentation of gaming scores will be a major point of contention. And unlike in interviews with the clueless Joes at Barstool, who can get suckered in with free mousepads, Billy will actually have to address these questions in a venue he doesn't control. Seems like getting entangled in all these lawsuits wasn't such a good idea, lol. We'll see how well it works out for him. On an unrelated note, I would like to note one factual error in this video. Despite my reckless and erroneous reporting, Justin Elliott is, in fact, neither a n00b nor a scrub.

This was awesome. As someone who has only followed the Billy story and has no background with MAME or the games, I’ve found it hard to understand what exactly is being implied by many channels when they say “he cheated”. That might sound odd but what I mean is “he used MAME” - I get that it’s not original hardware, but is the implication that he therefore used save states. That sort of thing. I also had no idea he was actually able to play better than the average player. Sure there are many others way better but he can somewhat play. This was a great breakdown in depth, history and all, about a subset of the lies. Will be reading your site, and please - make more documentaries!!

Thanks for reading, and for watching! I agree, there's a lot of "Billy cheated" summaries without a lot of really getting into the details of what he's accused of (although it's understandable people have been reluctant to do that, since the guy likes to sue people). I've wanted to do another video, just a basic overview of what the legal battle is over, and how the key pieces of evidence play into it. It's just a matter of setting aside the necessary time to write it, record audio, and put together all the slides.

Billy stating that he can break the "Ms Pacman" world record if the RNG allows for it is as comical as someone claiming that they can win the lottery if all of their numbers are picked. ALL of the "Ms Pacman" kill-screen-capable players already can get all the points from dots and ghosts so it always, always comes down to RNG. In theory ANY game started by a kill-screen-capable player on this title is a possible world record. So claiming that he "can do it IF" is utterly laughable...AND it goes to show what a charlatan he truly is as no self-respecting "Ms Pacman" player would have made such a boast.

I’ve played Ms. Pac-Man daily on a modded cab for the past half year. Just the idea of him saying that is hilarious just because it’s genuinely not a game that plays itself and gives you a score like Pac-Man ever does. You actually have to have skill and switch it up every other board if you want to killscreen the game because it truly is RNG, but a good bit of it can be conquered in a good number of ways. The only genuine RNG ruling against you though are the ghost AI in the first 20 seconds and whatever the fruit is randomized to out of each and every map past Banana Board, it’s not doing much to hurt or help your game. Lol.

I don't get how people take him seriously or how people in his camp seem to think people being there means anything when he can simply lie and the people with no way to disprove his lies will just accept the lie.

Going to a different country to play in their home tournament, in my opinion, is disrespectful. The top 10 places should have gone to Australians imo. The fact that he took top spot from an Australian is a giant middle finger to the country. And I would give him the benefit of the doubt saying he likely had no malicioua intent if he hadn't already demonstrated dispresect towards top players from other countries. When he broke his agreement not to take the perfect Pacman title until everyone who wanted to go for it met up again, he rubbed in the face of the top Pacman player from Canada (allegedly) and made it clear that in his mind, it was an international dick measuring contest. Now, this is alleged, but after reading what Billy said about Apollo Legend's death, I totally belive he's that petty. He couldn't stand the thought of someone from another country ranking above him. And that's not the only time he was alleged to show disrespect to top players from other countries. If he respected the Australian DK community, he would let them have their glory. If he doesn't respect them enough not to steal from their home competition, it's easy to believe he would ignore their rules to ensure he qualifies. And come to think of it, if he did hog a DK machine until he was able to qualify and everyone else had to get back in line when they fell short, he literally stole thunder from a more worthy Australian player. To be fair, if the Aussie DK community was cool with him competing, I would say that's their right and their business. But I strongly suspect most players didn't get a say in the matter. If I was in Billy's position, and I got imvited to compete in another country, I would agree to show up and play for charity, but I would humbly refuse to qualify for a rank in the tournament. I know lots of top Hockey players on American teams are Canadian, but that's different. Because when the team wins, the home of the team gets the glory. If Billy was invited to play for an Australian esports team, that would be fine, since the team would get the glory if they ranked first in the competition. Think of it this way: should a student be allowed to compete in another schools talent show or audition for the leading role in their play or be their prom queen? Of course not. That steals the opportunity from students of the school in question. TL;DR Billy Mitchell competing in the Australian tournament was disrespectful to the Aussie DK community.

Billy Mitchell is a movie villain character come to life. Completely egotistical in every way. He would sacrifice anything to keep his ego and records intact. Even when he knows its not legitimate. Yes he is a very talented gamer and has done some amazing things. Problem was his ego wouldn't allow him to get beaten. So he funded Twin Galaxies payroll and made sure other players were either made to look like cheaters or their scores were deleted. Disgraceful! When he got beaten in a live event, he has made fake gameplays on VHS with levels taped over to make it look like it was all in one. Tragic and desperate.

Can an intelligent Pac Man player explain something to me. There is talk about killing yourself over and over again on the kill screen to re-collect the invisible dots since you can’t gain enough points to progress to the next board. What I don’t understand is, with the kill screen board only having 9-invisible dots on the right side of the board, would you not make far more points getting all the dots but one and whatever extra things appear on the second to last board?

  • @ersatz_cats

    @ersatz_cats

    2 жыл бұрын

Good question! That would be the best strategy, if not for the fact that normal dots don't "regenerate" like that. If you die with one dot left on the board, you'll start your next life as normal, with the ghosts back in the ghost pen, but that one remaining dot will still be the only dot left on the board. This is part of what I mentioned, that you can't carry point-scoring opportunities from one board to another. The hidden dots on the split screen are the only dots in the game that regenerate, hence why they are used that way.

Thank you for watching! Obviously in this case, "sucks" is relative. I'm curious, how many Pac-Man masters do you believe there are? My impression is that most perfect score players move on to other games once they've achieved the maximum score on original Pac-Man, rather than refining their ability to do a three-hour perfect score on command. And I don't mean to belittle the difficulty in achieving a perfect score even once (indeed, if the mere act of a perfect score were easy, many more players would have achieved one), but there's a difference between that and when players like David Race and Rick Fothergill hone their skills and consistency in pursuit of the speed record. There also seems to be consensus that later Pac games present a more engaging challenge, which other perfect score players are then drawn toward instead.

When eye witnesses saw these things happen, you say the eye witnesses were all in on the scandal. Why would Twin Galaxies ban Billy Mitchell from even coming to prove himself? Why would they want to cancel all his scores based on one disputed score supposedly on Maim (spelling?) which Billy claims the tape was made before there was Maim. And is it possible that today's equipment isn't exactly like the original equipment, thus originally scores and times were possible thar no longer are? I really don't know. I think the question is more about how many people who put their mind to it could achieve it. the percentage is much higher than one would think at first - the game is essentially broken for high score attack competition and not even interesting for it due to how the ai in the game is. also it's not about "proving yourself" in regards of the dk, it's just about holding billy to rules billy insisted on - you submit cheated runs you get banned. as for witnesses billy keeps fumbling the stories about them.

The jury's not going to fall for that, though. Was telling the newscast he was perfect part of the "performance"? Was signing game marquees part of the "performance"? Or his podcast friends still believing they'd seen a perfect score months later? As to the court of public opinion, it doesn't matter what was good or bad for the event. As I said, turning gaming achievements into a make-believe farce cheapens the hobby for everyone. There's no need to empower, excuse, or enable that behavior.

Nah. He needs to stop suing innocent people. Have you read some of these lawsuits? Or seen the dollar figures he demands for them? In fact, in many people's eyes, he already was an entertaining villain when his publicly apparent "crimes" were limited to just being a hypocrite and full of himself. What we're seeing from him now is (in my amateur estimation) straight up psychopathy.
