PIXEL BURN - A King, Konquered: The Fall of Billy Mitchell

Ойындар

In this special episode of Pixel Burn I look at how the former Donkey Kong & PacMan world record holder Billy Mitchell wound up losing it all, in a sordid tale of emulation, dodgy tapes and circuit board shenanigans.

Wiebe's also a strange fellow (bless his autistic heart) but he comes off as genuine and well-liked. Given that the rest of his personality is pretty well-developed and admirable, he comes off as a dedicated fanboy rather than a nutter. Billy, by comparison (who is also autistic) looks, smells, talks and acts like a celebrity coke dealer circa 1982. He has the same hyper-intense autistic focus on speedrunning in ancient videogames as Wiebe does, but he's got absolutely no moral compass and his personality is like a walking caricature of something he saw on a TV cop show back in the 80s. Complete with the full black ensemble and the shitty sneer on his face. "Ha ha, weakling Wiebe! You've failed to foil my brilliant plans yet again! Now it is I who wear the title of KING OF KONG!"

TG actually never claimed Billy was first to reach the kill screen. TGs own record books from the 80s and 90s mention the kill screen and how it can't be passed. Hell the "how to beat pacman" book from 1982 has a whole section on the kill screen. Billy doesn't even understand why it happens - he says it's because the game runs out of memory to draw the last board, but that's not true. It's because it tries to draw fruit everywhere on the right side of the board. However the alleged perfect pacman game, yeah he was at least 3rd. In fact TG changed the rules so Billy could argue he was the only person to do it specifically that way - prior to Billy, you had to do all pacman score attempts on default settings h 3 lives + 1 bonus. However Billy's perfect was on 5 + 1 settings, so he could get the highest possible score with the regenerating dots.

  • @medes5597

    @medes5597

@@totallynotzokix11_mc21yeah but so did both the previous perfects. Bill Bastable used the dip switches to pause the game, and Randy Tufts parked overnight, possibly for most of the next day. And at the time, for all three, TG guidelines allowed parking if the game could be done so with player functions - so parking pacman overnight after the 4th and final scramble was allowed under pre 2001 rules.

It was deemed not legal because a ref wasn’t there to view it. But then Billy Mitchel is able to show his video and it is allowed to be a record? ツLio3LivioN You know, at one time Mitchell really WAS the greatest arcade player in the world, he actually made his name uncovering a cheat back in the early 80's. I suspect that he earned the vast majority of his records over the years perfectly honestly. Of course, having made his name and his fortune on being known as the greatest arcade gamer alive, when the new generation came along, with access to MAME, with a fresh set of skills having been forged in the fires of modern gaming as well as having access to all those rock-hard old games on tap no quarters required, and with a hunger to achieve that simply cannot be rivalled by anyone except other young men, he lost his edge and decided to turn to the dark side. He could have marketed himself as a legend, done the circuit, made some money playing DK and DKJ and all the other games by appointment for crowds of cooing gamers but he had to fuck it all up trying to keep up with hungrier, but only very slightly more skillful guys. My point is, Mitchell really IS a very, VERY good player. One in a million, even now. Don't let these recent revelations take that away too. And he likely earned many records legitimately, certainly to begin with, probably for many years after, and some maybe even now, although it's fair enough to delete ALL his records since one cannot tell legit from not, which is his own damn stupid fault.

Impressive how every damn youtuber and his mother "feels pity" or compassion towards this dude; And not A SINGLE ONE mentions the supposed friends who he stole the spotlight from. Imagine being Rick Fothergill, who was superior to "billy mitchell" at the game but in the spirit of competition they agreed to keep competing the next time they met. While he honored it, the cheater immediately went to another arcade to have unlimited tries to get it done. He has spent DECADES capitalizing on other peoples achievements and whenever the scorn people speak out they are openly attacked by his loyalists, defamed and treated like shit. Yet when this menace, this leech and vulture have been rightfully removed from the scoreboard he lied to get into; not a single word is spoken in their defense but everyone talks about how they feel sorry for this person. Thats more fitting for a sociopath than a normal person. PS; you mention the splicing of video; that was debunked in the thread. Those "cuts" came from the low quality transfer method the video went through (most probably it was Dwayne Richards who, when VHS videotaping the score from his tv screen. it was not a part of the conclusion done by twin galaxies. PSS; "billy" mitchell is also a owner and on the board of directors of that "gaming magazine". thats just how these huxters act; they always make sure to have a position where they could stop "mean words" from spreading. I have yet to see a video dedicated to the actual victims of billy mitchells insane egotrip and not about this scam/conartist.

Agreed, I've known people like Billy in my own life and I stayed away from any kind of interaction with them. I did watch the King of Kong documentary years back when it first came out, and just by looking at the guy I knew something was off about him. Appearance (gasp!) and demeanor can be extremely revealing about a person. Automatically after seeing him, his body language, and listening to him talk I knew I couldn't give this guy the time of day if I knew him. I couldn't talk to him without laughing in his face, simply because of how ridiculous he is and how seriously he takes himself. Now a few years later seeing all this stuff about cheating and all this nonsense, it comes as no surprise. Typically, sociopaths like this are extremely arrogant and self aware. But, they are completely unaware of how obvious they are. This guy is an awful liar, and his manipulation tactics are so transparent it's painful to watch feeble minds slobber all over his dick. It's sad really, that someone so pathetic as Billy can so easily manipulate people desperate for someone to look up to. This kind of person has pathological issues and it's unfortunate that it's so easy for this type to lead a herd so willing to follow.

The VHS stuff of Mitchell is just pathetic, he knew Wiebe was better. In all sports to my knowledge you become world champion by competing 101. Mitchell just had found a way to wheezle himself into a competition where he could change the rules when competition got better than him. When I first saw Bill Mitchell all bells went off and all red flags were waving. This guy has mental issues is what I thought.

the difference here is that the two were not competing in the "standard" way compared to a sports game, where two teams actually oppose eachother's progress. With speedrunning or getting a high score, there's no need to do so at a specific time or location (as long as the gameplay is legitimate) and you're not competing with just one person, and no one is activly opposing your progress. speedrunning or highscoring is just a display of mechanical skill and RNG (where applicable) boiled down to a number and then compared with other numbers made over the course of history under the same parameters. Any requirement to use specific hardware, or have witnesses/footage, is to prove the numbers legitimate, not to create the ability to play in the first place (as with sports).

Frankly, both of them are Aspergers cases. No other human being could develop the devout dedication and pinpoint fascination with high-scoring on such an old game. But Wiebe came off as a normal Aspie nerd whereas Mitchell clearly also has Narcissistic Personality Disorder; he literally wakes up every morning and thinks of ways to "get what he's due" for being the awesome Ubermensch he is, it's just that the stuff he feels he's owed by the world are all really nerdy Aspie shit like holding a world record for fucking Donkey Kong... In a way, he's terribly sad. The dude's immaculately dressed, obsessed with appearance vs. fact, a masterful bullshit artist, and able to lie the way normal people breathe; why isn't he a professional gambler or a hedge fund manager, driving a Ferrari and banging cocktail waitresses 3 at a time? Oh right. The Aspergers. The obsession. It's real. It's why he genuinely won his first award, then probably sat up for 48 hours blowing cocaine and muttering "Now, how to KEEP it....forever! hmmmmmmmm." He's like autistic Gollum.

There's no need to declare Wes Copeland's 1.218M world record as "really nerdy Aspie shit". It's a legitimate world record. How many world records do you have? I am ashamed to share a name with you.

You don't get to determine how much I want to know about Donkey Kong Jr arcade boards. I want to know about the diets of the personnel who crafted and loved theose boards. Did they have a carb heavy or protein heavy diet? When they went home were they asked about their day, or did they expend all the ,over they had to give into their craft? ...We need MORE, deeper dives into those arcade boards. Good video, I found it very well paced and didn't dwindle.

Bitscreed, You are very welcome! But in all truth, THANK YOU! You have a real talent for story telling, and doing you tube videos. And most of all you have taken the time to give your thanks to those who have come to send you this praise. This is why I no longer have cable TV in my home. Places like you tube has filled the void of the time I would spend mindlessly watching programs that could honestly care less about their viewers. Keep up the good work. I shall be around, watching within the dark corners of the room. Very rarely do I speak up, or comment. However when I do, I try to offer some meaning and share my interest in something that you clearly have put a lot of work into. Your effort and time spent shows. It does not fall on blind eyes and deaf ears. Have a great day today!

There's a character that rivals Young Adam Sandler in a video game competition back in the 80s. The character is played by Peter Dinklage, who bears a resemblance to Billy Mitchell. It all comes down to Sandler and Dinklage in a competition to reach a specific score in Pacman first, and Dinklage does it first. It is revealed at around the climax of the movie, decades later, that Peter had cheated. That's how Pixels "called" it.

Well it's not just about breaking the records now, two of the records being disputed were "First to reach 1mil in Pac-Man" and "First to reach 1mil in Donkey Kong". As it turns out, Mitchell was not the first to do either of these. I'm sure he could break those records now, but at the time, he was not the first. He took those records from the 2 people who actually deserve them

To be fair, Billy Mitchell admitted as much in King of Kong. It just took a lot of people another decade or so to figure it out. Video games are meant to be played in a competitive environment, under pressure, organized, where you have to perform, literally on demand. And when you do that, you have far more credibility then someone who says "oh I did that last week (you saw the glitched video tape I made instead of performing live that was merely a copy with no master). No matter how good you play Tennis, no matter how good you play golf, If you don't play when you have to play, if you don't play when the pressure is on, you're really not good enough. - Billly Mitchell

Personally, I think his scores were legit until he submitted the 1,000,000+ score. In the film, Walter questions Billy and mentions over the phone that Billy wasn't originally officially submitting the score. I think he was sending it for the ego of being able to say he was the worlds number 1 and it wasn't even his highest score. But when Steve took the top spot he left himself no option but to submit it or it would only have raised more questions as to why he wasn't submitting it. And while losing all his clearly legit records is harsh, sitting on top of a throne for so many years when you cheated to get there is more harsh on people like Steve.
