This has nothing to do with CAFE but has everything to do with low sales. Cheap cars have to sell in volume in order for car companies to make a decent profit but subcompact cars do not sell well in the United States. If they were selling over 100k of these a year they wouldn’t be canceling it. Compact cars are the sweet spot for automakers here. Subcompact is too small to be practical for most Americans, and mid size customers are just moving up to compact crossovers. That’s why Kia is killing the K5 here next summer and Hyundai isn’t bringing the refreshed Sonata here also.

  • @leax_Flame

@@DeadAir21 strongly disagree with the idea that they aren’t practical. Looking around the problem seems to be that larger vehicles are lower effort and higher margins so the auto industry tells people that smaller vehicles are not practical, or dig a person’s value for driving one. The issue doesn’t seem to be a small vehicle’s actual ability, but a made up problem to force people into larger vehicles. I say this as a person who drives a subcompact vehicle and loves it.

@@leax_Flame to each his own. I have had a subcompact car before as well and it when fine when I was younger because it was just me but as my lifestyle changed it became impractical. Americans are also bigger than most parts of the world so they choose vehicles that best fit their body because you know they aren’t going to slim down just to fit in a car. I also get hay marketing tricked people into thinking small cars aren’t safe but that now could be true with the size of pickup trucks now

This is happening on schedule driven by the politicians starting about a dozen years ago. EVs could replace small cars to bring fleet MPG up. The gov used to "encourage" the production of small inexpensive cars at a loss to raise the fleet MPG to required levels to offset thirstier vehicles everyone wanted. When the gov allowed the carmakers to do it with EVs (or EV credits from TESLA) the death of small inexpensive gas cars was as lawmakers intended.

I have a 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE top trim CVT. Its MPG ratings are 36 City 43 Highway and 39 Combined on the Window Sticker. However it gets far better MPGs than that and regularly gets in the 50s for MPG. They are extremely reliable cars, have tons of features, are cheap to buy and have a 10 year warranty. I have owned 3 and purchased all 3 new - 2015 Mirage ES CVT, 2017 Mirage G4 SE CVT, 2021 Mirage SE CVT. I have had no issues with any of them and they take everything you throw at them and the 3A92 - 1.2L 3 Cylinder Engine is very basic and low on power but is extremely reliable. Many people online have well over 200,000 miles on them and one owner traded their Plasma Purple 2014 Mirage CVT in to a Mitsubishi Dealer with 414,000 miles on it and bought a new 2020 Mirage GT at the time. They loved it and said how reliable it was. So they are meant to be basic reliable cars with lots of features and a low price and at that they highly succeed!

Manufacturers would make cheaper cars in the US if they knew they were going to sell a lot of them. If enough people don't buy them, they'll stop making them as they don't make enough money if only a small percentage of people buy them. It is more than possible, with good management, good design, good manufacturing, good supply management to make a low cost vehicle profitably. Domestic industry chooses not to, hence consumers are shoehorned into unaffordable vehicles and become 'poorer' esp. when EVs are part of the equation. Great content, thank you!

regardless of Nissan hate the SENTRA seems to be the best value, actually available at low prices IRL the Kia boys issues killed Kia & Hyundai for me, even if it is fixed now, you cant see the difference from outside so they will still break in and cause insurance issues Toyota & Honda base trims are nearly impossible to get at MSRP, I'd rather pay the same or less OTD for a better equipped Mazda or Subaru

Actual MPG numbers for each model listed below. The Toyota Corolla is way over priced and to even get heated seats you have to spend a much higher amount on upper trim. 2023 Nissan Versa CVT 32 City 40 Highway 35 Combined and the 5 Speed Manual is way worse at 27 City 35 Highway 30 Combined 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage CVT 36 City 43 Highway 39 Combined 2023 Kia Rio IVT 32 City 41 Highway 36 Combined 2023 Hyundai Elantra Base IVT 33 City 42 Highway 37 Combined Hyundai Venue 29 City 33 Highway 31 Combined The Mitsubishi Mirage is the most fuel efficient non hybrid vehicle in the USA and does it based on a small engine and low horsepower and keeps it basic and simple no high tech engine, no hybrid, nope just an old school design. To some thats a negative to others a positive its all in personal preference. Its a car that easy to work on and is very reliable with a lot of features for the price. I love my top trim 2021 Mirage SE and it has all I want like push button start, remote start, heated seats, big back up camera, sharp plaid seats, led head lights, led tail lights, led fog lights, apple car play, power windows, locks, mirrors, steering wheel audio controls, bluetooth, cruise control and so much more. Even the base trim ES now for 2024 comes with a ton of features. Some people want a new car that is cheap and has tons of features and saves gas and this is it. Is it the most refined or quiet, no. But is it reliable, yes! I will say the MPG number on the Hyundai Elantra are very impressive. Not sure what its real world ratings are or if it beats them like Mirage does. Car and Driver stated the Elantra Hybrid way underperformed its MPG ratings so hopefully the gas only powered Elantra does better because I think its a sharp vehcile inside out and has a nice 10 year warranty. Also the 2023 Nissan Versa is an amazing deal especially the top trim Nissan Versa SR it comes fully loaded and has so much and is a sharp car with extremely high online reviews from critics. You can get a fully loaded top trim Versa SR for around $21,000.00 to $22,000.00 range depending on color option cost and accessories you pick. You cant go wrong. Each car on this list will appeal to someone and none are bad its just each person has their own wants and needs and each car will fit that for someone.

1:17 Not to mention the cheapest new cars are often sparse/underpowered/small enough to be outdone by lightly used cars for the same price. The warranty isn't apparently as valuable in people's minds, and I guess folks don't really want as bare bones of an experience as they seem to vocalize. And size is the biggest value indicator for Americans.

2024 chevy trax starts around $20k USD, so some automakers do see the opening, in terms of cheapest new car, there's no competition, its always the corolla, spend that extra grand, highest hp, highest reliability by a mile, also you're looking at the corolla hybrids wrong, its not just about making up gas money from the extra 4 grand, it also retains much higher resale value when it comes to selling, so if the person can afford it, they should go for it, hybrids, PHEV, EV are the way to go, and if china attacks taiwan, fuel prices will double again.

They really need to make cheap cars that are better built, larger, safer, and not so ugly. So many of the cheap cars we had are very dangerous and had deisgns that would never have mass market appeal. People looking for a new car have the money to spend on something better. People on a budget are in a mindset where a new car is completely off the table. Plus insurance on small cars are not cheap either.

So, small cars will go back to the US, but as electric. Just wait to see what's happening when Tesla model 2 is on the marked....
