Another Ford Select o Speed Tractor

Ғылым және технология

Recently picked up another Ford Select o Speed tractor a 1959 Ford 871. It needs a little work. This is the early version of the select o speed transmission and they have a few issues that gave the transmission a bad name. Hope this one isn't a lemon. Thanks for watching.

Excellent video. I bought a 1960 Elenco 871 Select-O-Speed this spring and your video is very helpful as I want to make sure all the fluids are changed. Although the current fluid looks great, I still want to start from new. Thanks again.

That was a Good "Rejuvenation". By getting all that "Rot-GUT Sludge-a-matic guey" out of the Trany, it went from A "Slip-a-matic" to a proper. "Selecto-O-Matic" that just needs a little more "Tweeking". Hope you found the end of that Spring ! That old unit does'ent need any more "grinding-compound" in the gear-box. Just AMAZES me ,that people just DON'T Change fluids after the machinery is 10years old....; That's when they NEED it the MOST ! I just guess that's when others "Run them to death" ,All because they "Don't have a DIME in them"...( MOST likely just inherited"). It's just good "Ecologically" to keep Usefull machinery in "Good Werking Condition" & get at least a 100years out of them. Thank you Sir for the Excelent vidio and happy safe tractoring. Best wishes with all your endeavours.

Great video on the Ford SOS. I am officially a subscriber, just recently bought a 61 4000 industrial with a 10 speed SOS. I am currently about to do a filter and fluid change as well, and was happy to see someone who has a video of what to expect. I gotta admit the whole speed selector cable and pto cable part kind of intimidates me. I really don't want to cause any issues. My only critique, is that it would have been nice to see video of you removing and installing that portion of it. I see in the manual they tell you to remove the lower speed selector cable before removing the cover. I seen in the video that you did not remove it. Will the cable just feed right though the cover? Or did you remove it and put it back on after you had the cover removed? Seems like leaving it in place would greaten your odds of not having to make any adjustments after everything is back in place, but I also seen that you had to make final adjustments anyhow. Also look forward to seeing the video on the band adjustments as well. No real good video content out there on the ford SOS, especially the older ones. Your doing the Lords work buddy!

Thanks sorry I didn't film the selector reinstall. I did unscrew the lower half of the cable to get the cover off and back on I tried to unscrew the pto cable also but it was stuck good in the pto lever but was able to maneuver the cover enough.

Thank you for this video!! I’ve been rebuilding the engine on my 1960 1801 industrial. It’s been sitting for >25 years. Our family tractor since new. We were able to get it running and the SOS worked well enough to get it on trailer. Looking forward to changing fluids and adjusting bands ( I’m sure my dad never adjusted anything!!!). He’s been gone for 8 years, but the tractor will running soon!

how does that inventive knob keep the PTO engaged M cable is broken up behind dash and that knob idea sounds like the solution but iam not sure how it would stay engaged ,the ford dash manual remote had a spring loaded ball to kit ti in the position needed Bob Hope you can answer thanks BOB

yeah it would have a problem staying engaged without something holding it. I guess they either just used it like that with a spring clamp they would put around the cable once pulled out or vice grips. It needs a little more development to get it right.

The carburetor has a tag that says the date on it. I think that tractor is an 800 series and not an 801 series.

That’s interesting. I have only messed with 4 speeds and 134 CI motors. I have never seen a Select-O-Speed in person. I have a Jubilee and a 640 which is all I have messed with. I want an 881 or 861 diesel. They cost too much for me.@@TheGoldenHillFarm
