Another Direct Drive--The Kenmore 80 Series Washer!!!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Originally recorded December 15, 2014.
A while ago I posted a series of videos on a house that was being inspected for my friend xjoe81x. The house had a Kenmore 80 series Direct Drive washer.
It was now time to see if the machine works. It does, but it looks like it's going to need some attention.

    My parents bought this set while my mom was pregnant with me in 1998, they still work flawlessly to this day. My dad used them up until probably 2010. I thought he had gotten rid of them, but he had them in storage waiting for my first place! That meant a lot to me, I will keep and repair these machines as the need arises. Newer machines just do not work this well, I can get the biggest/bulkiest items clean. No HE machine could do things this well.

    Wow, that's an awesome gift. Yeah, these machines can serve for a very long time, and do an excellent job washing every time. Learn how to repair them, it will be worth any amount of money. Plenty of videos out there, including from myself, on various repairs. That's IF they ever need it, they are extremely reliable.

    I'm sure it's got at least another 26 years left in it. Don't get rid of it for any reason, fix it at ANY cost, it will be worth it. They don't make them this way anymore, and they never will again. You'll never get as good of a wash in as short of a time as you do with this washer.

    I have a set of these kenmore elite 80 series high capacity and I won’t give them up for anything! My grandparents bought them new in like 96, I took them before their house sold in 2016. I recently moved and brought them with and will be selling an expensive GE HE set that came with the house so I can keep using these. My grandparents never had to have them repaired and I had to replace the igniter coils once and replace the belt. The HE set we are using now is terrible. It might have all the bells and whistles but sometimes spots on clothes are still dry after a full wash cycle and it washes for like 60-70 minutes. These old kenmores wash in like 20 and get clothes cleaner. The kenmore dryer is gas over electric and I much prefer it over an electric one, it always seems to dry better and quicker!

    There is absolutely no question that the Kenmore machines will far outperform the HE set. That's why HE stands for Hardly Efficient.

    Just bought this washer on Facebook market place after getting rid of my Samsung front load washer and I must say... this is one of the happiest days of my life. Had I known then what I know now. So happy to finally be getting rid of one of the worst washers EVER (Samsung front load). Although it’s pretty looking, it is such a pain to keep up with. Love the simplicity of this washer and hope to use/keep it for years.

    Appears to be working pretty good. Weird how parts of the drum brake fell apart. I looked at the brand new GE top loaders, the way I spin the tub in those, it feels like they have some sort of brake but doesn't appear to be doing any good the way I can still spin it by hand

  • @jaykay18

    Different design. And I'm sure the brake is there for use not in the same way these machines use it. Or they may actuate the brake when it's actually running somehow. The brake drum fell apart due to neglect and age I'd say. It's kind of like rear brake shoes on a car, it kind of came "delaminated" from the hub. It can happen, although it's rare. There are 2 of them, and 1 is still intact, so it still kinda works.

    We have this exact washing machine. Ours is very bad rusted out due to having well water. The area where the hole is that you put a piece of wood? in and helps it spin has rusted and now having to squeeze underneath to get it to start rinsing and spinning. I think our machine is at least 20 years old. I'm going to have to buy a new washer and dread it. I don't think anything will ever outlast or work as good as Kenmore!

  • @Sharkie626
    @Sharkie6269 жыл бұрын

    According to a site, this machine was made in August of 1996. I think that sound you heard at the start of the drain is the motor coupling starting to go bad, it's a very distinctive sound. The speed of the drain I think was okay, it will appear slower when there are no clothes in it. The spin clutch looks like it is in great shape, as the tub spun right up. The brake definitely is weak. That one is harder for me to explain, but, it IS still doing what it should or else it would slow down a lot slower than even that.

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    9 жыл бұрын

    Not doubting, but I'm not totally convinced about the motor coupler. I would expect if that were going bad you'd hear it all the time the motor is running, unless it has to do with the torque placed on it; less torque causes the rattle. We've yet to redo the drain there, or even take it off the pipe. There may be some clogging somewhere, perhaps the drain pump may be weak or have some junk in it, or it's perfectly normal. The brake, we subsequently found out, is in 2 pieces. Not sure if it comes that way, but it almost looks like back brake shoes on a car. One half of it fell out of the machine, so it's only got the other half left.

  • @Sharkie626

    @Sharkie626

    9 жыл бұрын

    jaykay18 The brake is indeed two pieces. One came out? I've never heard of that before, interesting! It is like a car's drum brakes, only difference is, the pads are what rotate, and the metal rim around them is stationary. If it was absolutely necessary, you actually could get a replacement cabinet, of course, if Joe ever wanted to.

  • @jaykay18

    These machines have a "magic clean" filter that cleans itself. Yes, of course it can be manually cleaned, but that requires a tub spanner tool, you have to remove the wash basket to get to it. My recommendation is just run the machine with nothing in it for a few cycles. As long as it still drains and works properly, you're probably fine. You could also pop the cabinet off and check the drain pump. You might be able to see inside with a very high-power flashlight. If not you could always remove the hoses, but doing so might cause them to start leaking. So if it works, leave it alone. If you keep getting "deposits" on your dark loads (you'd have to try it and see), there may be stuff in the wash tub (that's the container the basket sits inside. Again, that requires removing the basket. Then again, if you've had the machine for many years, it's probably pretty grody in there, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to clean anyway.

    Andrew Gallucci I kind of doubt it. The Kenmores were always a little more money and had extra "features" (if you can call it that), but in the end it's still a direct drive. As a matter of fact, I will have a couple washing machine videos coming up in a few days!

    jaykay18 That's like how Hotpoint was GE's value brand. My grandparents have an old Hotpoint washer from the 1980's. It has a bad tub seal and probably hasn't been turned on in at least 6 years. I meant to fix it, but never got around to it. The interesting thing about it is that it has 2 agitators.

    It's either a bad pressure switch (water level switch), or the hose that goes to it is either disconnected or has a tiny hole in it.

    I just bought a used kenmore 80 series washer ( think it's 1999) for $150. I don't like the newer efficient washing machines with the "idiot" lights and I am hoping mine will last a few years. How has yours held up now that it's 2019????

    This actually isn't mine but my friend's, and it's held up nicely. I have 2 Whirlpool direct-drive washers (Kenmore IS Whirlpool, after all), since 2009, and I only had to put a set of agitator dogs in the older machine, no other repairs, although I have done several modifications such as lid switch disable and warm rinse option (as my machines have no such option). I've been toying with a "water add" feature as well, but have no immediate plans to add it. So that being said, they've all been flawless!

    This is a long shot but I have been looking everywhere for where my lint filter is in my Kenmore 80 series washer, which is exactly like this one. After 26 years of use, it's just now leaving lint all over my clothes. Can anyone tell me where and how to clean the filter? Thanks!

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    7 ай бұрын

    To access the filter, the wash basket must be removed. It is on the underside of the wash basket. It is not a replaceable part. It's a "magic clean" filter, it's supposed to clean itself. Either yours is just too gunked up after all these years, or perhaps you have a drainage issue that is actually causing this to occur. You can remove the wash basket to look at the filter, and you can clean the filter yourself if it needs it, but you can't remove or replace it. To get the wash basket out, you need a spanner wrench, there is no other way to do it.

    You might also be able to find the model number, and the manual on their website, and it's possible there is documentation that shows where it is.

    I looked it was nowhere to be found. I am baffled. I am thinking maybe it was pulled at some point and try doing a load. when It comes to spin oh goodness that washer was jumping all over the place. I called sears keep getting people in the Philippine who cannot help me. I had to stop the wash. Now I am waiting to go online later to see what I can find. Too frustrated right now.
