I read or heard an interview with Roxie Roker when she was auditioning for The Jeffersons, and I don't know if it was Norman Lear or a casting agent who told her that she would be playing a woman in an interracial relationship and would she have a problem with that, and she responded by going into her wallet and pulled out a photo of her husband and Lenny 😊

It ain’t over til it’s over was a song where Lenny was trying to rekindle his relationship with his then wife Lisa Bonet. Lisa was a TV Star when she played one of Bill Cosby children in his hit show. Sadly the song didn’t work on Lisa as Lenny and Lisa divorced. But the Soulfulness of the song showed Lenny’s range as a primarily Rock artist to being able to crossover into R&B, funk and soul music. It’s one of my favorite Lenny songs.

When he first started he only used vintage recording gear. When most bands where starting to use modern digital recorders. Lenny recorded with old analog tape recorders and mixing boards and effects from the early seventies in order to get that fat rich classic rock sound. Later he started recording digitally and you can definitely hear a big difference between his first four albums and the ones that came later.

I'll never forget this story. Kirstie Alley was hosting SNL many years ago and Lenny Kravitz was the musical guest. They had to shoot some commercials for the show and Lenny was wearing dark sunglasses while they set-up. When they shot the commercial Lenny pulled off his glasses as soon as Kirstie started talking to the camera. When Kirstie mentioned that Lenny was on the show she turned and looked into his eyes for the first time and she just lost it in his eyes.

She was on the episode with Meatloaf and Alice Cooper where they ranked rock songs. She was gushing over how much she loved Jimi Hendrix, especially the song "Purple Haze". I can totally envision her reaction to seeing Lenny in person. lol

@3:30, wearing dreads was Lenny's original look. By the time this song (from his third album) came out, Lenny was already a highly respected rock musician. Once in the early 1990s he needed a backup guitar for an MTV performance of Are You Gonna Go My Way. Legendary bassist John Paul Johns from Led Zeppelin stepped up to jam with him.

  • @thomasdreher8221

Kravitz had the dreads early in his career. Had them for years. Interesting side note, his mother was the neighbor in the Jeffersons whose character was in the interracial relationship. (In real life she was married to a white hollywood music producer.) Kravitz first came out as a throwback to late 60s and early 70s style and music. Other suggested songs: Let Love Rule Stand By My Woman Fly Away It ain't Over til Its Over I Belong to You Heaven Help Again Can't Get You Off my Mind.

Alright so you were either around back then or you're just a huge Lenny Kravitz fan or just music fan that gets trivia down. I remember the lady on that show The Jeffersons from reruns and her name on the show was Helen if I'm not mistaken. I've been trying to figure out who do all these people commenting think he sounded like from the 60s and 70s other than Maybe Jimi Hendrix because of the guitar and a little bit of Blues-funk. All the big stars that I think of our big tracks from the 60's and 70's are from fans that do sound anything like this. I'm going to name a few but it doesn't mean I know all the music I'm just saying these are the big bands I know about from the 60's and 70's just to name a few and I'm only tagging you in hopes that you can throw out some names that he is reminiscent of from the sixties-70s. No particular order but I'm going to try to just toss out the bands that stand out to meet as far as knowing their music to an extent and I asked you to help me tell me please and show me please where am I missing the pieces? The bands I know from the 60s and 70s that were pretty hitmaker people are The Beatles, the stones, the Eagles the doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen, CSN, Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, and I could name a lot more but they're all basically going to fall under the umbrella I just mentioned and I'm not sure if I mentioned Pink Floyd because I am using speech to text since I'm on a break right now at my job. So I'm not saying these are the biggest bands of the 60s and 70s but to me it seems like they were making hits on a consistent basis. Jimi Hendrix experiment or experience because I can't remember, and the Doobie Brothers where Funk / Rock to me. Possibly Santana? I'm trying to learn and I cannot learn if I don't ask people in real life and people like you who is it that his stone is reminiscing to in the 60s and 70s because I don't know anybody. Keep in mind again I'm only 21 years under my belt so I don't know that much except everything that I'm learning and have learned as I mentioned above. I've heard of earthwindandfire but I don't know if they are rock or Funk or something of a hybrid. So you're going to have to help me out here because honestly all I can think of when I hear him if we're talkin about the 60s has to be Jimi Hendrix and it's not because of the skin is just I know about Jimi Hendrix from reading his story from Young. Lenny most definitely reminds me of Jimi Hendrix. It's not really anything to do with the skin color but it's more so maybe it was somebody that Lenny Kravitz gravitated towards because of the skin color but also because of the rock-funky sound and the guitar. I don't know the history of Prince that will but I do know that purple happens to have been his favorite color. I'm thinking Jimi Hendrix color was also purple but now I'm grasping at strings. You can ignore this long freaking message from some youngster or if you get time maybe you can kick me down some knowledge so I can continue to learn about this rock of different eras period keep in mind that I was pretty much raised a hip hop head, but since the virus hit us and we all seemed to have more time because of the lockdown in the beginning, I feel like I've learned a lot about different types of music but I do officially have a favorite rock band haha. You might love this or you might hate it but so far is guns and roses and I'm talkin anything I've heard from the sixties all the way up to the alternative scene and then

@@choice12ozborne Couple things I can point out: Lenny's vocals, in THIS song at least. He's using a very "Jimi Hendrix"-style delivery. I'm not a huge fan of his, so I don't know all his songs; but he definitely didn't have this same style when he covered "American Woman" or in "Fly Away". Also...listen to the TONE of the guitar. That kind of distortion...with the "fuzzy" kind of sound...only comes from OLD amps with transistor tubes (or from modern software that can duplicate the sound). Amps made after the 70s largely stopped using the tubes in them, and the sound of the distortion changed.

@@choice12ozborne Frist, if anything. I am simply interested in music, curious enough to pay attention to detail and have been around for a while longer than you. I do not think he sounds like any particular 70s artist. But he uses recording techniques, and equipment designed to capture the overall sound of that period. His guitar tone sounds similar to Jimm Page, Joe Perry and Marc Bolan. His overall image is reflective of the late 60s to 70s. I think his image is what most people are reacting to.

The song is WAY deeper than that... This song is about Jesus Christ, whom Lenny referred to as "the ultimate rock star." It's about how God gives choice to man about where to turn. The opening lines spell it out: I was born long ago I am the chosen I'm the one I have come to save the day And I won't leave until I'm done

You hear the influences of Lenny per other artists. This one is a tribute to Hendrix. You hear a bit of the Beatles hey Jude in his first hit Let Love Rule. He has influences everywhere from it ain't over til it's over and use of a falsetto and a throw back to 70 s soul and R & B. Lenny has a style that pays homage to musical heroes of his while creating his own musical take on what he does as an artist. His covers if American Woman or Fly like an Eagle show his respect for those he grew up on. By the way his mom was Helen on the television show the Jeffersons.

This song was a huge hit in the UK in the early spring of 1993 but I always thought it sounded straight out of 1973. I absolutely loved rocking out to it and still do. Around that time there was quite a lot of nostalgia for the music and styles of the early 70s taking off,at a time when the economy was in a mess and the government was still being hard-nosed about helping out those who'd taken a hit. I thought Lenny seemed to have a real earlyish 70s retro vibe going,in his soulful and slower numbers as well as his rockers. The critics sneered at the retroness of his style but I didn't care about that.
